I used to exchange emails with Ed Cassidy after buying a Spirit album off his mail order company years ago... The 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus and the first Spirit album were on the turntable all the time...

Published by happyted at 12:40pm on Fri 7th December 2012.

Embarrassingly (because it's a bit sad to buy an album just because the artist has died) I've just bought the first spirit album. I had a quick listen today and some of it reminds me of Syd era Pink Floyd, which is a good thing. I'll see what I think once it has arrived and had a chance to listen.

EDIT: I've listened to the album twice now and I don't like any of it I'm afraid.

Nutty pegged that one on Feb 5th Mal...

and The Troggs were well known/famous appart from influencing many bands for "Wild Thing", "With a Girl Like You", "I Can't Control Myself", "Any Way That You Want Me" and "Love Is All Around" (no 5 for the Troggs and at no 1 for fifteen weeks in the UK for the Wets and royalties enabled Reg to take it easy) ...

The Troggs are widely seen as a highly influential band whose sound was an inspiration for garage rock and punk rock. Influential American critic Lester Bangs "called the band the progenitors of punk", according to NPR.For example, the Troggs influenced artists such as Iggy Pop, and the early version of British pop-punk pioneers Buzzcocks featured "I Can't Control Myself" in their live repertoire. The Ramones are also amongst punk bands who cited the Troggs as an influence. "I Can't Control Myself" is perhaps the most enduring favorite of critics; it continues to be championed for its originality and lasting influence by radio hosts such as "Little" Steven Van Zandt.
The MC5 covered "I Want You" at their live shows and recorded the song for the album Kick Out the Jams, although they renamed it "I Want You Right Now".
The Jimi Hendrix Experience famously covered "Wild Thing" during their appearance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, introducing it as the British/American joint "national anthem", and climaxing with Hendrix burning his guitar.
In 1990, the first hit for the band Spiritualized was a cover of "Anyway That You Want Me". This cover was later used in the movie Me and You and Everyone We Know.

some people know zilch.

did seem unfair though he did get the recognition and an ex-gratia payment... though I bet no where even minutely close to what the Nation estate has got...

'As Cusick was a BBC employee at the time he designed the Daleks, he was on a salary and not paid royalties. Given the large revenue generated by merchandise featuring Cusick's Dalek design, some feel that he should have been paid a royalty (as was script writer Terry Nation, who created the concept of the Daleks but not their design or appearance). However, this was not in the terms of his contract. Despite this, the BBC did recognise his contribution with an ex-gratia payment. Cusick himself never asked for more money; just to be recognised as the designer.'

I once had a conversation with a South African who tried to persuade me that Heep had produced better music than the Beatles

Several people, South African and otherwise, have tried to convince me that Uriah Heep and various other bands of that era produced better music than the Beatles. Sometimes this is down to personal taste (as in the case of those who prefer Led Zep and Black Sabbath, because they like the heavier sound); often it's because they've only really heard the poppier, earlier "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy writes sappy pop record about it all" Beatles that gets on the radio. When they hear some of the later stuff from the period when the band was regularly taking LSD but before John and Paul had vanished up their own bumholes, they usually change their minds and agree that the Beatles had their moments. Happiness Is A Warm Gun usually does the trick, I find. Blue Jay Way is another good one - it tends to get overlooked, but it's a cracking tune.

Are we not men? Never saw them live but saw their video of Satisfaction played before Grease. Must have been late summer/Autumn 1978. Dennis Farina RIP. I always confused him with George Clooney. "We've got beaches in England, Avi." "Who the **** wants to see 'em?"
Of the 3 I'd prefer to see Mel Smith.

^^ Used to love Farren in the NME. Remember Watch Out Kids? His memoir Give the Anarchist a Cigarette is a hoot. Very sad that he's dead...but what a way to go.

Tim Wright, original bass player for Pere Ubu but left before A Modern Dance (I think he might have played on one song on the album).

Later he played in DNA where he made an even bigger racket than he did in his first band.

To pedanticise... Tim Wright played on first two Pere Ubu singles and the first studio version of "The Modern Dance" (song), but not on "The Modern Dance" (album). Looking into the heart of darkness...

He was a good friend of my Dad (who died last year) and i've met him at Mum and Dad's house a few times. he took an arial photo of their house from one of his autogiros. which has pride of place in thier hallway.

As a youngster my dad remembers him building racing boats on the Ouse, think he broke several records at that too.

Incredibly his father built and flew an aircraft just two years after the Wright brothers. so the family has a real connection to the history of aviation.

Albert Bourlon, a cyclist born in 1916, died yesterday at the age of 96. He turned professional in 1937 and enjoyed his first professional victory, at Châtellerault; a year later he rode his first Tour de France and finished in 35th place, 2h18' after the winner.

While some races continued during the Second World War, professional cycling largely came to a standstill. Bourlon joined the Army, but was captured and imprisoned by the Nazis. Known to be a Communist (he'd been politicised when he was involved in organising strikes during his time working for Renault before his cycling career) he was in very grave danger of being executed. He attempted to escape from prison three times, eventually doing so in 1944, after which he made his way to Romania which had been liberated from Nazi control by the Soviet Red Army only a short while previously. That same year, he won the Boekarest-Ploesti-Boekarest race.

When the War ended, Bourlon returned to France and later entered the 1947 Tour, the first time the race had been held since 1939. At the start of Stage 14 he escaped the peloton and then successfully stayed away for the remainder of the 253km parcours, winning the stage - the longest successful breakaway in Tour history.

Noel Harrison - son of Rex Harrison - Windmills of your mind - from the Thomas Crown Affair:

Round -
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning
Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind !
