Obscure rock deaths

Today's obscure rock death is the drummer of Space who died on Saturday falling over crossing the road.

This is the slightly pedestrian britpop Space as in Female of the Species. Not the really cool 70's synth french disco band who went on TOTP dressed as spacemen.

Yes, still terribly exciting even today. I also like bands who have just one single which is an incredibly big hit (was magic fly a number one?) and then nothing else ever again. Of course they had more hits elsewhere.

I always thought that the deaths of the 54 drummers of Spinal Tap were very obscure.

Funnily enough I put on Altered Images on the pub jukebox on saturday. I was in an 80's pure pop mood. They didn't have any Transvision Vamp or Fuzzbox but Madonna into Duran Duran into Mel and Kim made at least one table finish their drinks and leave.

Published by Silent Rob at 7:09pm on Mon 3rd August 2009.

I once nearly had to leave a pub in Beverley, E.Yorks, after putting 'Indian Love Call' by Slim Whitman on the juke box far too many times in succession.

Published by Kuryakin at 9:43pm on Mon 3rd August 2009.

I had a bit of an 80's pop fest during my walk to work this morning. Duran Duran's Careless Memories, Rio and New Religion, The Lotus Eater's The First Picture of You and Tears for Fears Ideas As Opiates. Balanced it all with Camisra & Let Me Show You to finish. Set me up for work good and proper all that.

From Wikipedia

"Recently the verb "Wyatting", named obviously after Robert Wyatt, appeared in some blogs and music magazines to describe the practice of playing weird tracks on a pub jukebox to annoy the other pub goers. The name was coined by Carl Neville, a 36-year-old English teacher from London, because one of the favourite LPs for this effect is Dondestan.

Robert Wyatt was quoted in The Guardian: as saying "I think it's really funny," and "I'm very honoured at the idea of becoming a verb." However, when asked if he would ever try it himself, he said "Oh no. I don't really like disconcerting people. Although often when I try to be normal I disconcert anyway."

So big in metal circles. I suspect if you stopped most people on the street they'd be none the wiser. Most of the people that have been listed were big in one circle or another at some point.

Stuart Cable.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/10253098.stm

I used to find his eyes scary. Mostly notable for being continually hailed as the figurehead of the mortal enemy by Select Magazine when it got really into post rock towards the end of the 90's, just before the magazine closed because Britpop was well and truly over. it wasn't a finacially sound move that was it? This meant that Mr Cable seems far more famous than he actually is.

Pete Quaife, bass player with the worlds best ever pop band The Kinks. Played with the band during the pop classics phase, played on Village Green, demoed Arthur and then left the band just before they became not exactly shite, but not quite as good as they used to be.

Here's a song about hats from Arthur. He didn't actualy play on this recording, but it's one of my fave ever songs anyway. I like hats.

Sorry, I've always been rather into the Kinks. Best pop band ever, plus they invented heavy metal.

Hehe! Though stealing a riff from blues songs is standard for 60's pop bands. Though in the Rolling Stones case they stole the riff, then sued any people who copied them.

Published by Silent Rob at 10:03am on Sat 26th June 2010.

Indeed, I was just very pleased that in this case i new exactly where it was from. No doubt the Wolf heard it somewhere else before as well.

And then other people *Cough Albarn* spent a lot of time in the 90's writing songs just like Village Green, though not as good. It all goes round again and again.

Sorry Rob. Will have to organise something Karmadillo related you can have dibs on. Given I did my knee in just picking up a cricket ball, its bound to be something suitably silly.

Just reading about the chap - in the early 70s, he used to experiment with oranges and grapefruits. As ways of fingering the cello.

Published by rishistar at 8:28am on Mon 6th September 2010.

No problems. I am happy to have other people reporting the demises of rock musicians. In fact it saves me a job.

Karmadillo also had an oboeist who broke her ankle while doing Kareoke. Doesn't bode will unfortunately. :(
