[Event Chat] Ciarafest 7: The Saffs, Return of Id, Pony Colaboration and Ellie Walker - 07/10/06

This is idle chat about the event...
Ciarafest 7: The Saffs, Return of Id, Pony Colaboration and Ellie Walker
Saturday 7th Oct 2006 | Venue: The Portland Arms
Price: £5 in advance | Time: 7pm | View event details

I make no apologies for bad spelling and gramaaar in this initial write up - its a rush job! However, I'm sure the bands will take things much more seriously. Well, I reckon Ellie will anyway! Lets face it people - this sells itself. I've looked forward to all of our Ciarafest gigs so far, but this one probably the most. Lets 'ave it!

Can we get tickets in advance or is there a reservations list?

Published by simon_b (not active) at 9:33am on Tue 12th September 2006.

Think sadly only a res list - we tried to sort out the Junktion doing tickets for us before, and they said yes, but it just equalled ignored phone calls and being on hold a lot, so we gave up :(

Published by hairyarsenal at 9:39am on Tue 12th September 2006.

I could set up wegottickets.com for you if you'd like. I can now arrange that payments go direct to your bank account, which makes it a lot more straight forward. let me know.

Published by simon_b (not active) at 9:43am on Tue 12th September 2006.

Problem is booking fees and also setting something up that doesn't cost us anything - the Junktion said they'd do it for free. They were probably drunk at the time though...

Published by hairyarsenal at 9:59am on Tue 12th September 2006.

WGT doesn't cost the promoter anything, although there is obviously the booking fees. I'll have a word with them and see if they could waive them.

That'd be great - cheers : )

Same night as Comets on Fire in Notts, rubbish! Would have been cool to see Return of Id again.

Published by crushingdeath at 11:21am on Tue 12th September 2006.

Pah! Is Comets on Fire in aid of charity young man?

Tickets on sale now - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/12728. Wegottickets.com are donating a chunk of the booking fee to the charity too. They can't donate the whole thing cos they still have bank charges and VAT to pay, but 25p min from the 50p should go to charity.

This is gonna be great…

In other Pony related news:

On Friday 15th September, we will be supporting Jimbob (ex Carter USM) as he returns to the Man on the Moon to promote his new best of album.

We will be playing a radically different set-list to the one we’re gonna do at Ciarafest, so you really need to go to both…

You can get your tickets here:

http://www.wegottickets.com/event/11212

Also on the bill are Pacific Ocean Fire, who are a great band and bloody good blokes.

Don’t ask about the Return of Id reunion.

I’m sure everything will be fine.

Sorry for only coming here when I want something.

Come on you buggers - get 'em while they're hot!

http://www.wegottickets.com/event/12728

The famed Ciarafest publicity machine (ie Queen Blag) is going to roar into action tonight, and I wouldn't want any lovely WANers to miss out on the tipperty top hot gig of the year!

Published by hairyarsenal at 4:59pm on Wed 20th September 2006.

Don't no about 'roaring' into action, more of a light potter about town. if your going to any of the following if you see and crazed bird with orange hair giving out flyers like theres no tomorrow (there might not be, you never know) take one and come down. The URl for the tickets (http://www.wegottickets.com/event/12728) is on the flyer so you have NO EXCUSE!!

The Pippettes, Rocker, Linda's Nephew, All American Rejects w/ Motion City Soundtrack, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, The Take, The Portland Comedy Club, Tupolev Ghost, Johnny Panic, Seafood, Goo Goo Dolls.

2 weeks of madness. i'm also giving away mad goodys at GCWCF as long as you sign up for e-mails from Love Music Hate Racism and take a flyer with the mighty Lozster & the Yellow Clipboard of Shills! Oh thats a good band name huh?

Published by QueenBlag (not active) at 11:29pm on Wed 20th September 2006.

Motion City Soundtrack supporting All American Rejects? Oh noes :( I thought it was Matchbook Romance and was pretty annoyed about missing them anyway. If it's MCS I'd better get looking on E-Bay / selling my soul for a ticket.

Published by AccidentProne at 7:41am on Thu 21st September 2006.

Yeah, it should be with Motion City Soundtrack, The Starting Line, The Format, Gym Class Heroes. I wouldn't go and see AAR on there own. I'd rather rip my own eyes out! But MCS and The Format are class.

Published by QueenBlag (not active) at 9:21am on Thu 21st September 2006.

Grr bloody hell, MCS site doesn't have a gig mentioned that day, but they are currently in the country, they're supporting AAR in teh states too straight afterwards.

Just checked the Matchbook Romance site and that still lists them as playing.

Guess it's all irrelevent as I doubt I'll be able to get me hands on a ticket for a reasonable price anyhoo.

Published by AccidentProne at 9:31am on Thu 21st September 2006.

I've just got some ace posters made for Ciarafest 7. Does anyone know anywhere I could get these blown up A3 size and in colour? The cheaper the better althought seeing as it's charity, free would be the acest.

If you buy online, you will essentially be giving an extra 30p to the charity, unless of course you just put in extra on the night, which you are of course more than free to do :)

However, as we hope to sell out, you may not get in. We'll still happily take your money though :)

Anyone phoning the pub, seeing a flyer, getting an email or reading about it in the paper will know its advanced tickets, so most people should be aware. We are telling everyone we know to buy online, so they know if they don't get in its their own fault. For the few people who genuinely cant get online tickets, we'll sort them out if they tell us in advance. But being "mates" on the night might not swing it, sorry :/

You have to remember that the most important thing about this is raising money for charity. I expect not to sell out in advance, but if we do, brilliant - the charity gets loads of cash. While its nice to think "ooh yeah, just come on the night" thats great until it rains or snows and no bugger turns up.

As I say, it probably wont sell out in advance, but if it does don't say we didn't warn y'all :)

that's what i meant, if i'm gonna pay 50p booking i'd rather just pay it to ciarafest direct than give wegottickets a cut.

i'll take my chances on the door, as i don't know how many people are coming with me yet and don't want to find that half of us are stuck outside.

Published by James Alternation (not active) at 7:53pm on Sun 1st October 2006.

Wegottickets don't make a profit on this, however you're right, that giving a whole 50p to Ciarafest is a good thing.

Erm, no simon, fraid i shall be there.... I still think it is out of order to try to sell them ALL via the net... kinda fucks on anyone without a credit card... whilst selling out is the most important thing, it also seems harsh on those travelling for the gig to not know that you're trying to make it advance tickets only.

Chris... did Jazz talk to you??? He has people coming from out of town who want tickets but have no credit cards (see above)

Published by James Alternation (not active) at 10:14am on Tue 3rd October 2006.

Woooaaah, chill dude. Plenty of gigs sell out in advance and all the cash goes to charity anyhoo. You seem to think there's some sort of conspiracy on this! Didn't see you complain when Duke Spirit sold out in advance at the Portland.

Chris is actually holding some back for the door, so don't worry, there will be some left to make sure people can get some. I got Kirsty to buy my ticket, as i don't have a credit or debit card.

simon, i was just making a comment about people without credit cards in response to "This WILL sell out before the day" which more than insinuates an intention to not make them available on the door.... as far as i know this has nothing to do with you though? As i said, i'm sorted for tickets, so where does your conspiracy come in?... i'm very sure i didn't give a toss either way about the duke spirit gig tickets.. i can't understand why i would.

I was attempting to convey the message that most people do NOT read WAN *(calm down readers, but it is true), maybe not most people you know, but most people in general, and a footnote about tickets being available in advance on a fairly illegible poster will not make people think they can't buy tickets on the door. I know that ciarafest folks aren't the sort to leave people high and dry and would do what they can to make sure people who travel for a gig would get in.... its a simple concept. A lot of people are coming from out of town who are friends with the bands and would be very disappointed to not get in.

Maybe its something to do with tuesdays, but i really can't be bothered with WAN wind-up games today.

Just made my housemate buy a ticket- I told him they were selling out fast.

I actually sat next to him on the computer badgering him until he paid!!!

Published by ax_coterie at 5:01pm on Wed 4th October 2006.

Hmmm, I really starting to think putting those extra tickets online is a big mistake. If (and I hope it does) sell out then there's gonna be alot of dissapointed friends and fans who will be stuck. How many other people apart from on this board know how to obtain tickets. Whilst I'm really grateful people have gone to the effort to get tickets what about people without credit cards etc? And the doors gonna be a nightmare. 70 people having to have their ref numbers cross referenced. Chris, I think Pentneys gonna need a hand, at least for the beginning.

It may be me but I'm just getting the feeling that this is gonna be more Wanfest then Ciarafest, maybe I'm wrong but as I mentioned before organisers the bands playing themselves have alot of family and friends who we're gonna need to get in and if that involves buying the tickets ourselves then I'm afraid that there won't be many tickets left for anyone without a credit card.

Sorry, if I'm coming across an asshole, just didn't expect more tickets to be sold online.

Oh, and Ash always goes on the door at the start, so no worries.

Published by hairyarsenal at 11:01pm on Wed 4th October 2006.

Just had a quick look through the ticket list and it looks like a mix of the odd curious wan*er, people who are travelling (including an old saffs fan i've not seen in the area for 4 years) and the die hard locals. I know a lot of these people and the vast majority don't post on here.

WGT post out to all the people who've bought tickets for their shows, including a lot of people who've maybe not bought a ticket for a local gig for a long time, so maybe it's dragged a few people out of the wood work? Maybe the real question is not whether we should sell tickets in advance, but more that a bigger venue (that could be had for free) or another night at the portland, perhaps on the sunday would be the answer?

Published by simon_b (not active) at 1:38am on Thu 5th October 2006.

I think Jazz is going down for 3 - dunno if that's for a Saffs practise though. Ash will be there about 6, as will the soundman (Jay, of Immaculate Conception fame, hehe).

I'm at work, and knackered, so will play it by ear. I may go home to bed and be there about 8. I may go home, ponce about, and be there at 6 with Ash, or I may go down at 3 for the footy, drink too much, and be home in bed by 8.

Its the lottery of life.

Return of Id were my highlight too - superb - although The Saffs were great too. Sadly didn't catch much of the ponies.

I also really enjoyed Ellie - one of the things I've most enjoyed about the Ciarafest gigs is we've managed to get good people right down the bill, and people have responded by coming in early. We must've had 60 or 70 in for her set, and it was the same for Paul Goodwin and Tim Victor before that, which is great - the artists perform for free, but we're getting them an apreciative audience, so it feels good for us too.

There also seemed to be a great atmosphere in the pub, and thats been another recurring theme I'm proud of. Seems to be a great vibe at the gigs :)

Thanks everyone for making it another great night - I'm going back to bed!

The Neutrinos vocalists feet

You spotted them :)

Yes I find that when taking pictures its best to indulge personal obsession . . . I never thought of myself as a trainer or foot fetishist . . . but I now have plenty of photographic evidence to the contrary

*Groan*

I look a right state in that pic. That lock-in must have caused more damage than I thought...

Dude I liked your band the best.
You really had something going on.

Published by joosypigeon at 10:08am on Mon 9th October 2006.

Cheers Joos. We enjoyed playing. An excellent turnout all round methinks!

Yes, we had a lovely time. Thanks to everyone who watched and clapped, thanks to Matt and Ian for bringing the skills and the other groups ruled.

Congratulations to Chris and Ashley on another fantastic show.

Yeah, it was wicked and absolutely rammed so hopefully Ash and Hairy made some decent cash for the charity, I had a really good night and was kicking myself that i missed Eleanor Walker et al. Must do better next time!

great night everyone. Lovely to meet yet more of you lovely WANers and apologies to anyone who has now caught my cold! QB - loving the piercing (sorry I didn't say hi, I didn't stay that long because of the lurgy!). JP - pleasure talking to you sir, so glad I now know the handshake! Lots of fun and a great gig. For a Saffs virgin, I am now completely converted (and got the cds!).

thanks everyone :o)

Are you the one that is drinking coke or something that looks like it, and wearing a blue t-shirt with some interesting white thing on the front? Or were you the one who tried to untie JP's dress?

A really ace evening. Didn't watch a whole lot cos I felt like shit (though that didn't stop the boozing!!) but I fell in love with Ellie, enjoyed the Ponies, and marveled at how chaotic and shabby (in a good way) The Saffs and Return of Id were. It's like 8 years ago all over again.

Thanx to everyone who came, bought tickets, watched the bands, got drunk etc, etc. Another storming Ciarafest in the bag (almost makes up for the time they let me play acoustic on the first one, lol)

haha, we weren't the only ones that dumb then?, lol

Cracking night, though whoever suggested going to the kambar afterwards is a bad bad bad person.

apologies for the kambar suggestion - although you lot didn't take much persuading. everything i ate/drank on sunday tasted like cheap tequila.

Published by harvey_dangerous at 1:14pm on Mon 9th October 2006.

An excellent night as always though as usual this meant it was all hands to the pumps to keep the beer flowing so only got to see bits of each. Saffs were really good as well as Eleanor W.

Heh Joosy, any chance I could nick a couple of your pics for the porty website, always nice to get pics taken on the night.

Published by theportland at 1:17pm on Mon 9th October 2006.

I think the Kambar suggestion originated from DJ Ohmygod at the Empress on Friday.

Great news - add to the cracking night a whopping total of around £700 raised for Premrose!Pat yourselves on the back, you lovely people.

Proper figure to come later when we've done our sums.

Role on January and, erm, February - looks like we'll be busy...

DJ Ohmygod took some in the pub but i forgot to steal his camera to take photos of the band. I'm not sure whether he went in and took some.

Joosey, I have no recollection of attempting to undo your dress, as the pictures demonstrates I was calm and composed. Please can you refrain from allowing your Boris Becker fantasy's bleeding in to your mysapce reality...

This was an amazing night, I was far too gone by the end.. I'm surprised i was still getting served at the bar TBH...

Ha ha..

Return Of ID ftw.
