All NEW Listening Thread, Shit!

I'm listening to that MGMT album. I've heard it about 8 times now and I still don't know what I think! I love the first song and then I like the rest of it. Bit nondescript. Fine sounds for this weather though, you fucking hippies.

That was pretty much what I thought about it.

Yeah, kind of confused me a bit too. FWIW, this is how I reviewed it:

Testcard -- Lines (a bit crap, only made it four songs in)
Dark Captain Light Captain -- some EP or other (didn't even make it to the end of the first song)
Big Star -- Third
and am now indulging in Viva Voce.

Bad Religion... first EP and LP - Classic Californian Hardcore. (1981/82)
2nd LP - Prog rock folk keyboard rock with no punk rock at all. The record was decimated by the punk rockers and the band split up due to "drug abuse and college" (1983)
2 EP - 5 tracks of mid-paced ploddy punk rock (1984)
Nothing for years... aside from weird little folky tracks on compilations by Greg Grafin and Greg Hetson (Greg/Greg)
Third album - classic Californian hardcore to the max. 1988
Fourth album - more of the same, more polished, lyrical gymnastics... getting big...

then they went on and got bigger and bigger with major label intervention, picking up and then dropping... founding member is a lifelong Heroin user and left for awhile... band went a bit rubbish (even with the guitarists they had) and then Brett comes back after blowing all of his label profits (Epitaph) on smack and parties with his head screwed on and they get good again.

"Into the Unknown" is a bonafide "anti-punk" classic. We love it in our house... I think Danny the photoboy wonder was a little freaked out the other night listening to it mind!

I have endured an entire day of reader's demos, and now want to listen to something that will erase the memory. Am contemplating Metal Machine Music.

I have just got a two-disc set of remasters of Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. I'm baffled as to the difference between the two discs. I'm also slightly baffled by why people think it's so great. Anyone?

Published by sam i at 4:29pm on Wed 21st May 2008.

It's a cliche, but stick with it. There are real songs buried beneath all that fuzz, and they take a while to sink in. Loveless was probably the best £5 I ever spent on an album

Metal Machine Music / Loveless - really going for the tunes tonight, eh?

Published by arthurCRS at 4:45pm on Wed 21st May 2008.

I'm thinking some sort of white noise type affair might refresh the ears after such a parade of dreadfulness. Am almost getting into bits of Loveless now, though still hate that awful drum machine.

First listen at the gym this morning, but I think I'm going to really really like this.

Again, one listen only, but mining a similar territory to The Drift / Sunburned Hand of the Man, I'd say.

You're more current than me. I don't have anything of his from the last ten years, but believe he's been a part of all the 'Oceans' films and done other soundtrack work. I still remember the two Daves, that's Dave Clarke (temporary host of Annie Nightingale's show in '96) doing a phone interview with David Holmes. There was just a wee bit of swearing, and DC was a bit embarrassed as he was supposed to be in control, and it being Radio 1 and all. I think I still have all the shows from the period transferred from tape to mp3. Annie was mugged while in Havana in '96, it seemed safe enough when I was there six months later. This ties in rather cleverly with my other Grand Arcade post don't you think ;)

Listening to loads of bands that are playing Indie Tracks this year. A mixture of good and bloody awful. Still a bit sad that the Puncture Repair Kit aren't playing...
I'm enjoying Pocketbooks ( www.pocketbooks.org.uk/#/listendownload/4525466749 ) they're as shmindie as Stuart Murdoch's corduroy long-johns* but the tunes are good enough to get away with it.

*speculation

Published by Mattstep at 5:27pm on Tue 27th May 2008.

ah yeah the pocketbooks are cool. Andy's solo project the Sunny Intervals put out a CD on WeePop after we did, and we even did a Cambridge WeePop gig with him and someone else (I think it was Bunnygrunt who were/are amazing).

We're starting rehearsals for indie tracks this week to try and move from bloody awful -> good. I don't think we can make it in time though! We have half of the band in Denmark, and half over here so I dunno what to do. Immediately after indie tracks I have to go to an island outside Stockholm to chat about silicon detectors for a week. :-)

Gnaw Their Tongues - An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood

Charming I thought but when I read the review I had to give it a spin........

"Gnaw Their Tongues music lives up the stomach churning imagery of their band name. Apocalyptic doesn't begin to cover the aura of evil covering this release; anarchistic might be more fitting. Disjointed samples and programmed drum bursts are staples of underground black metal but always within a musical context. These tricks of the trade also appear on Epiphanic Vomiting, but like the use of guitars, bass, and keyboards, totally outside of any traditional form of musical composition. This record isn't so much made up of songs as it is cauldrons of black noise and whale songs from some beast in a H.P. Lovecraft story."

ah seems i'm in line with Sonar line up even if not there... X-102 (US), Yazoo (UK),...heehee oops, just the thought made me lose the power to alphabetize!!!

and as the blub says: "On Saturday, two major reunions will take place: It has taken twenty-five years for Yazoo to once again play essential hits of the last quarter of a century like “Don’t Go” and “Only You” live. And fifteen years for Jeff Mills and Mike Banks, the founders of Underground Resistance, to revisit their most famous work: X-102 discovers The Rings of Saturn, a unique and unrepeatable show, which you can only enjoy live exclusively at Sónar."

though strictly speaking it should be X-102 re-discovers The Rings Of Saturn. i so want to be there :( http://www.vimeo.com/1040428?pg=embed&sec=1040428 (soundtrack is 'Tethys' by X-102)

X-103 on radio 1 would almost make me listen again. its so bland someone on DIS mentions "on radio 1 it was that live music week in a city and it was in Brighton and john peel dragged chris moyles to a melt banana gig. Hahahaha." indeed!

the only thing about Atlantis on vinyl is no visible track cues so to listen to a track somewhere in the middle you have to play around with finding the start

its funny how records often have favourite tracks, and when you return to them after a few years a track that sounded so so is so much better. now quite like 'Slashers Revenge' and the latter half of 'Don't Die Just Yet' on David Holmes - Lets Get Killed (Go Beat, 1997). oh and last night i think i had my quickest online sale, maybe i should have listed it at a higher price. Bomb the Bass - Bug Powder Dust / Absorber (DJ Promo featuring remixes by Kruder & Dorfmeister, Chemical Brothers and Jedi Knights) under 15 minutes. would quite like to check out other Jedi Knight/ Global Communication stuff, or maybe their remix work at least. its so quiet here i wonder if my neighbours have gassed themselves, or my new double glazing is bloody brilliant?

best album ever! i quite liked the doc although i didnt like the way they ended it with forever changes. i wanted to know more about late 70s/80s era arthur - roaming hollywood with a bad wig being bitter and busking n stuff...

it was released last month. a completely new mix apparantly.... why the f*ck would you do anything to that album....it is perfect!

Published by goatwolf at 1:20pm on Fri 8th August 2008.

Is that the one on double 'legend/legacy (whatever) edition? No, I nearly bought it at the weekend. For a sec I thought it may be the 'original' mix, ie no strings. Years ago, I remember reading all the time that Arthur never wanted the strings on there. But judging from that doc he was well involved in making it happen.

There have been so many stories over the years. I used to but that old fanzine 'The Castle' I swear it has the same photcopied articles every time it came out.

re the doc - some late stuff would a been cool. I saw them/him in the mid-ninties at the Highbury Garage backed by the High Lamas. I didn't see the Forever Changes gigs though. Twat. What's the dvd of that like?

Snoopy's slippers are unreal. I wish I coulda seen that when I was eighteen stoned outta my head or something. Bonkers.

Published by bigsoulstew (not active) at 2:51pm on Fri 8th August 2008.

yes it is. it has a stereo and a mono mix i think and then this new mix. it would be kinda interesting to hear forever changes without the strings, it would be even more interesting to of heard bryan macleans lead vocals that were cut out by arthur. I havent checked out that zine but will do...

i saw the forever changes concert at the corn exchange- it was amazing, saw him a couple of other times too - also amazing! the DVD is actually really good and can usually be found in a borders or fopp sale for about a fiver.

snoopys slippers are great, and he has the most amazing house ever! I did think the bit where he is in his little hot pants, dancing and singing in front of the mirror was a bit strange though!

i like this thread, it can be a way of sparking off conversations about music, you wouldn't necessarily know about. think it's through this thread or an earlier version, that i got into Julian Cope.

It depends i guess whether you see music as being one of the plusses of the forum, as i do, or not. As the home page includes what's on etc, i'd have thought music is always going to feature heavily.

Published by steve w at 3:42pm on Wed 13th August 2008.

It's just one thread of many. People should just read the threads they want to and not the others OR, if something in a thread is irritating, try and discuss or "steer" it in another direction? I do sometimes find this thread a bit irritating / pointless - when people just post up what they're listening to and no-one responds. It's more interesting when others then say "oh yes - I really like that too" or "Oh, I was wondering if that was worth buying" etc etc - ie a bit of dialogue not just

I'm listening to band A
I'm listening to band B
I'm listening to band C

etc etc

Got the new(ish) youthmovies album, on the strength of a TLOBF review that didn't really like it all that much. Not sure how that convinced me.

Don't know if this is the time or the thread, but had anyone heard the Jaguar Love album, or is there even one out? I'm guessing from one song I heard the other day that they must have something to do with Blood brothers, who I totally loved.

Oh wow, yes please. In fact there was one track I spent ages tracking down, Killing Joke - Requiem (A Falling Leaf Always Reaches The Sea Dub Mix) on account of that mix :)

Just been listening to Carl Lekibusch, C-System and Cymbol. My review of the Aaron Spectre mix, pretty good 7/10, might have been higher but I'm not so keen on the Ragga/Jungle elements, anything from the Drumcorps list and 'Mordor'. A bit I was quite surprised when it went a bit more EBM/electro around the 40 minute mark, not heard him play anything like that before

Really can't recommend Botch - We Are the Romans enough, although I suspect I'm there well late in the game, what with them splitting up in 2002. Quite mathy, quite jazzy (though not to the extremes of Dillinger Escape plan) really fucking excellent hardcore.

I listened to the album last night VERY LOUDLY on my headphones, whilst completely monged, coming out of a trance somewhere in the middle of a 8 minute gregorian chant bit, just before a huge slab of metal melted my slack-jawed visage right off.

I'm listening to Dead Prez - Revolutionary but Gangsta, which doesn't scale the heights of Let's Get Free, but has some nice moments. Don't know quite how the gangster passages fit with the earlier political statements in LGF, but maybe it's all a parody of gangster rap that I haven't yet fathomed.

Next up is Explosions in the Sky, who I probably should be totally familiar with given my band, but to be honest I don't listen to all that much post-rock. Then Fugazi - Red Medicine will continue my Fugazi research, and finally I'll listen to some Last Step, which is early-ish Venetian Snares 12s and EPs that I've not tracked down until this point.

Ad that's my Bank Holiday weekend, right there.
