Singing ability vs Eye candy

What happened to the idea that a singer's #1 attribute should be able to sing?

I mean, Nina Simone... looked scary as fuck but by christ she could sing.

Compare and contrast to Kate Nash... a girl who looks good enough, but can't sing for shit. I mean, who gave a recording contract to someone who lisps so badly it sounds like it was recorded at the reptile house in london zoo...?

Oh, and fuck Radio 1 for blindly playing this crap...

jumping off a park bench doesn't have quite the same (sorry) "impact", Lozzy...

I think you're missing the point with Kate Nash. (Don't like her myself)

How do you define a good singer anyway? Mariah Carey has a massive vocal range but I'd much rather listen to Billie Holiday whose range was barely over an octave.

I think she has a freaky goblin face, yet I don't mind her voice. Apart from the stupid accent, which grates to buggery!

Published by BennyG at 3:33pm on Fri 28th September 2007.

That's part of her "charm" ;)

Published by DJ Ohmygod at 3:34pm on Fri 28th September 2007.

The accent or the goblin face? :-)

Published by BennyG at 3:37pm on Fri 28th September 2007.

Doesn't she write her own stuff? Bit unfair to ask her to also be stunning and have the voice of an angel.

*spits at mention of Mariah Carey*

I probably am missing the point of her since I can't see it. :)

crap songs, crap vocals, crap lyrics.

Elvis never wrote his own stuff, and he was a great performer. Sometimes people are better performers than songwriters, and vice versa. Kate Nash should take up Marcelle Marceaus' mantle.

Just musing that I can't imagine anyone would make a thread like this about a male singer-songwriter. Meh.

Published by katemac at 3:54pm on Fri 28th September 2007.

I'm not sure what that means?

oh hush, thandor.

*awaits wrath*

I just mean you wouldn't get a thread saying "what's the point of that James Blunt, he's got a funny voice and he's not even that good looking".

It would say "James Blunt is shit". But you get the idea...

i would much rather be judged on my singing ability than my looks for obvious reasons

*sigh* Bob bloody Dylan or Nick Cave then... I know they're hardly in the same league, but when did you last hear someone say they were no good because they aren't male models and have operatic voices? it doesn't matter... why should it matter for Kate Nash...

kate - did you actually read my post? the whole point is that nowadays they seem to pick female singers because they are attractive not because they can sing - the exact opposite of what you implied.

Published by pigeon at 4:31pm on Fri 28th September 2007.

pigeon - yes, if they are pop puppets like Britney or Girls Aloud, but I don't imagine that Kate Nash was "picked" in the same way - someone correct me if I'm wrong, perhaps I'm being naive.

She was taken on because she's marketable, and so is almost every other band. Even the indie ones- there are always loads of bands that sound like the latest crop- the best looking ones usually make it.

I can think of quite a few munting indie bands of recent years :D

Anyway thandor, I'm probably coming to see your band tomorrow. Are any of you fit?

Aha! The mighty thandor is clearly not a mighty cider connoisseur like us mighty pissheads. Strongbow is more acidic as well. And fizzier.

I very much enjoyed those ciders you bought me! I especially liked the Organic ones; I buy them from ASDA now. £1.58 for a nice bottle. Yum.
