Laptop fix up help!

Hey dudes and dudettes. Just got my laptop screen fixed up but the actual laptop workings are still a bit screwed so I need to sort it out.

Does anyone know of a good website that's for a beginner in these kind of things?

I want to know how to stop things starting automatically when I turn my laptop on, etc. I'm doing a Windows update, AVG update, etc.

I used to have hijack this! I believe but I wasn't entirely sure what it did so I need a bit of help. For a new laptop it's far too slow and it's pissing me off. I also keep getting Dr Watson (that bastard) when I'm trying to view my pictures.

Help!

Have you tried msconfig.exe?

Some of the applications that are starting automatically may have options to stop them from starting automatically. Also, anything in the 'Startup' start menu folder will start automatically so removing something from that folder will get rid of it.

type "msconfig" into the "run" option the start menu.

youll get a box come up, and at the top their will be a tab that says "Startup". in there there is a list of programmes/utilities opening on startup, uncheck all the ones related to what you want to turn off, then press ok. then when you next turn the laptop in, they wont load :D

ax, am fuming, you wouldn't want to hear my language. Just got a Vista computer, dual processor, bees knees, fast. But it's not, slow as hell, every thing that I run is checked, spent a fortune to get a "Dog slow computer" You got anything to cheer me up before I jump out the window?

Have you checked what's running at startup? A lot of new computers have lots of crap installed on them, mainly trial versions of things, the idea being that a lot of retail computers are subsidised by advertising revenue from the trial programs installed. Lots of these also install quicklaunch programs, which load at startup so loading the program when you need it doesn't take as long, or autoupdaters. Both sit in memory, so take up RAM, and make the computer slow to startup. Virus scanners also lag the startup time.

Check your system tray in the bottom right corner. You should really only have the clock, speaker icon, network icon/s, a battery and your touchpad if it's a laptop, and possibly a graphics card utility. Things like Quicktime/Realplayer/CD writing software and whatever, if they're in the system tray at startup, you can choose not to have them load at startup in the programs' options section. And uninstall all 30 day trial things you may have had installed when you bought it, usually the only useful thing that comes with a new computer is DVD playing software and any kind of office software. Vista should be as fast as XP, my modestly powered laptop runs just as speedy on it as it did on XP.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. It's a lot better now! :)

Sorry to hear you're having problems though, Greggfall :(
