WTF. a guy dies. What makes you feel that you should relish in that? I am not saying that you should not have your own opinion but surely there comes a point when you are intelligent enough not to dance about on the grave. QI is on BBC 2. Surely that is more entertaining?

Published by James Monroe at 10:15pm on Tue 15th May 2007.

Is it? Ooo. *switches on television*
Great to know that something good has come of his death- I am now watching QI!

Do you know who Jerry Falwell was?

Here's a nice quote:

Falwell asserted that when The Antichrist comes, he "must be, of necessity, a Jewish male"

Interesting philosophical point Monroe. Is it ever acceptable to rejoice in Death?

I know students at the uni got in trouble for planning a 'Ding dong the witch is dead' party for Maggie.

Should we respect the grief of the family of Falwell, when he has shown no respect to the way that many people choose to conduct their life? He didn't seem to show respect to the families of homosexuals, did he? Instead, his message would be that they'd gone straight to hell.

He was an old man who died and he poses no threat to me. Should I dance on his grave Joshua?

Published by James Monroe at 10:40pm on Tue 15th May 2007.

So if your argument is that his views posed no threat to us, why are our views on his death posing a threat to his memory?

By that reasoning, I could have beaten the shit out of Jerry Falwell had I ever had the chance but by being glad that he's not going to be able to spout his bigoted views anymore I've crossed the line and I'm rejoicing in death?

I'm not rejoicing in death as an event - I'm pleased that there's one less foul man on the earth.

Jerry Falwell dies.
The first post was
"Good riddance, cuntface!"
the second post was
"Good, the man was a c**t. There, i've said it."
I smply feel that revelling in a mans death is weak. What does that make us?
I was simply saying that I was dissapointed cos I thought this might be a room to join. Obviously I am in the wrong place. I have questioned some of your regulars and you have all jumped on my back. Are any of you gay? Are any of you asylum seekers? Maybe. I'm not sure. I apologies that I have offended you all. I leave you to rejoice in the death of an old man.

Published by James Monroe at 11:03pm on Tue 15th May 2007.

As someone who hates Thatcher i hate to correct you, but you might find the following interesting:

When the Conservative party under Edward Heath won the 1970 general election, Thatcher became Secretary of State for Education and Science. In her first months in office, forced to administer a cut in the Education budget, she was responsible for the abolition of universal free milk for school-children aged seven to eleven (Labour had already abolished it for secondary schools). This provoked a storm of public protest, and led to one of the more unflattering names for her: "Thatcher Thatcher, Milk Snatcher". However, papers later released under the Thirty Year Rule show that she spoke against such a move in Cabinet, but was forced, due to the concept of collective responsibility, to implement the will of her fellow ministers.[3] She also successfully resisted the introduction of library book charges.

I think your logic is mental. Ok to kick someone, but not to rejoice in their death on a messageboard that they will never read because they are DEAD? What a load of bollocks. Who cares if any of us are gay, or asylum seekers? Does that make our opinion more worthy if we are? Yes, we do have some gay posters. Not sure about asylum seekers.

ahh BB this is where wine makes tv excellent. If you drink enough then everything becomes entertaining although the rest of you life turns to poop and reading books after this much wine is futile unless you like reading the same books over and over.
I am not familiar with the authors you mention except for Ruth Rendell. I am a very happy go lucky kinda reader. I pick things up at random. last book I read was 'We need to talk about Kevin' and before that 'Stuart: A life backwards'. I love to read but the damn vino!!
Is there a book swap/book group around here?

*Sunshine is that the recent film? I love to read a book and then see the film interpretation. Comparing it to what I have imagined is always intersting.*

Unlikely, James. Everyone here is pretty much of the same political bent, they all drink together at the Portland, and their arguments are mainly over which indie band is the best and who's the most politically correct. You can probably try and have a decent conversation, but you'll soon realise that no-ones really interested in debating politics, just trying to look "right" in front of their friends.

Anyway, yes, death to all who don't agree, and all that...

I don't wish death on anyone. Sometimes we say we do, but not really.

However, Jerry Falwell was a foul character. I said so when he was alive and just because he's dead it doesn't mean I have any more respect for him.

It's also interesting to note his own total lack of sensitivity when dealing with the deaths of people he didn't like:

"AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals" was just one of the thousands of disgracefully insensitive, vindictive and, lets face it, medically and biblically unfounded comments he made against the homosexual community.

I was interested in your comment, Mr Monroe:

"He was an old man who died and he poses no threat to me."

The fundamental Christian right is as strong in America today as it's ever been. Along with Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell campaigned for political control for the religious right and frankly that poses a very real threat to the secular governments that run our countries..

My peepers are proper shuttin' Matt H so this be my last words on this matter I swear but it sure seems that you are looking to something to be angry with.

I'm not looking for something to be angry about, I've got something to be angry about.

Something for yous to be talkin' bout prhaps.

Let it go Daddio. An old man died. Was he Jesus? Do the Muslims celebrate Christmas? Am I gay? What is Japanese for peace? Them Afrian babies with no parents do they give a shit or do they want food?

I'm not really sure what you point is here. A lot of people don't like what Jerry Falwell does. Just because he was an old man who's now dead doesn't mean I have to "let it go". In fact, I refuse to "let it go". Looking at the media and political reaction you'd think he was some kind of saint. Well he wasn't. He was a nutcase. Sure, he's dead now, but that don't change a thing. There are a million Jerry Falwells out there spreading hatred towards homosexuals, atheists, Muslims etc (Pat Robertson being probably the worst of the lot), and just because it doesn't affect me directly at the moment, doesn't mean it won't in the future.

"Them African babies" very often have no parents because of AIDS. You might want to have a think about the Catholic stance on contraception. We can treat the effects as much as we like but the problems won't go away unless we attack the cause, especially when the causes are large powerful organisations are brainwashing people into thinking a certain way.

Still after many hours and many threads I say to y'all is the hatred towards a man you didn't know but shared an opinion you didn't like (but didn't believe in (but didn't hurt you in your priviledged Cambridgian position)).

Ok I am losin' the thread due to tirednes/booze/weed but it's nice to know that all these people that hate this guy (JF) did so much in his left to fight him and spent so much energy fighting the real casues as they have done me.

nope no sense left.
mmmmmmdrugs r bad mkkkkkay

*all words spoken here are not to be taken seriously due to the ridiculous state of the poster. It is very late and I am quite infuriated/intoxicated however I have quite enjoyed the debate. Perhaps tomorrow we may talk about daddy*

* Saddam or poopie as I call him Allah rest his sould.

Saddam is dead! How disrespectful. Just because you don't agree with his opinion doesn't mean you have the right to hate him.

HotJon & James Munroe: If everyone agreed on this board the threads wouldn't descend into arguments apart from when you two posted. The fact that they regularly do (look at the recent debate on bank charges for example) proves that you're incorrect.
