Old Cambridge Bands

...after the impending success of us managing to get hold of some tracks by Stormed, it got me thinking that we should pool connections to see if we could find tracks by more of the local bands we loved all them years ago. I can give webspace and decent bandwidth to any of it and could knock up a basic webpage for them if we got enough. We do have to get permission from the bands involved though :-)

So what do you think?

If you like the idea, write the name of the band and a few words as to why and i'll edit this post to form a list of who we want and where we're at), and if anyone knows any of the members of the bands give them a shout or point us at them.

This could be great...

I'm gonna start with...

Stormed - (CD on its way... massive thanks to Rob)
This Replica - (Man from Uranus was in them... must contact him)

Not a Cambridge band, but I saw them loads at the Fisher Hall.. Dumpy's Rusty Nuts. I saw them out at Melbourne once too.

I can't wait for the Stormed sounds, James!

Dumpys Rusty Nuts, now theres a blast from the past. I still have a cassette of them live from the kerrang festival in 84. My uncle taped if off the radio and gave it to me when i was about 10. The tape was also my first introduction to Motorhead. mmm, memories

Ciarafest 8, Saturday, September 30th, Portland Arms - not only do we have The Saffs headlining, but also The Pony Collaboration doing a 50/50 split set as their classic old mid-90s teen indie band Return of Id, with full original line-up. Hurrah!

Well you learn something new every day. Hang on, maybe you should get Gaz to play bass whilst kicking a bass drum and headbutting a snare or summat. If he had one of thoseBritney mics he could sing too.

Now I'd pay good money to see that.

not strictly a cambridge band, they played here quite a bit, but one i always thought were cool - they were from peterborough and got into heroin apparently, played the portland a few times with skinrush and a couple of others. the secret hairdresser upstairs at the graduate in 99 or something before they got the limiter in was a great show.

Buried Trevor would be cool to hear again.

Gwei Lo were definatly from Cambridge (they all lived in a house on Mill Rd) and none of them were into smack. FACT!! and yes, it's a bit sensitive because they were (are) my friends and with light of what happened in the past it's not nice to throw a rumour in to the mix.

If anyone else wants to grab people they know that would be way cool... i don't wanna be headmaster here!

some bands have not made the list for either not being from cambridge or general concensus is they are too recent (i don't know where that line comes?) or for being a covers band.

colonel hathis fans may like to know that i think they are reforming and doing some gigs, gary seemed very excited about it a couple of months ago

gwei-lo were spectacular i thought, worked and was good friends with gav (now in the bfb of course) through most of the gwei-lo period i think, including the truly tragic ending. One problem we might have is that they were signed to bella union and i certainly have no idea what material that covered... we need permission for everything on this, though i suppose it is vaguely (and i mean vaguely) possible that bella union may allow a track or two.

Harry Gibbons knows the stuff!

Gav played bass for Gwei Lo throughout. Let me see if i can hassle Dave to give the word on the subject. Of course before Gwei Lo/Smegma he was handling the low-end chores for Manna Maya...

Published by HarryGibbons at 10:19pm on Wed 31st May 2006.

I think I've got the early Gwei Lo/Smegma stuff somewhere. The packaging on the Bella Union CD is lush. And Al's solo CD is well worth a listen.

James you can have some of the Saffs 'Too late to Terminate' era stuff.

I remember when we first did that demo. My then girlfriend had just had her 2nd ultrasound of my firstborn and I asked her if we could use the picture for our demo. She thought it was sweet and then asked what we we're calling it (the demo not the child). I told her and had the image of the child snatched away faster than it took me to help make the thing and we had to make do with a featus from the internet.

And we all lived happily ever after....

Way, way back I was in a band called Device - this was around the time of bands like The Softboys (Robyn Hitchcock), Hondo, Dolly mixtures, Stormed, Your Dinner. We actually managed to get out of the incestuous Cambridge scene and played at places like the Rock Garden.

Later I was in Rumour Has It - we played about 10 brilliant gigs and then fell apart - good band though.

Played a tour in Holland with Sindy and The Action Men - honest!

Later still I joined Colonel Hathi. Can't answer FergR's question about the guitarist with a guitar carved in the shape of a tiger though, but then I only drummed with them for a couple of years.

Re James info: "colonel hathis fans may like to know that i think they are reforming and doing some gigs, gary seemed very excited about it a couple of months ago."
Gary hasn't said anything to me about this - which probably means they're going to use that really young and far-too-good-for-his-age drummer instead. =(:o-

...yes, I'm pretty long in the tooth now, but still gigging - with The Screens.

Yes, I'm intrigued about the mashed potato mayhem. Not enough bands throw food around these days. I think food fights should be encouraged. They are hilarious in a refreshingly stupid way

Another band I remember (around 82, shit I'm so horribly old) was called Inner Sense. Tim Corcoran was the drummer and they had a sax player called Steve or Stuart or something else beginning with S. They used to play a song called God in my Beer which still gets stuck in my head sometimes. I don't think they were around for very long though

I only saw Whiskey Before Breakfast once. It was at Strawberry Fair in 1996. I thought they were utterly fantastic, but then I keeled over 20 minutes later and had a little rest. This means that my judgement might not have been at it's best.

Immaculate Deception

Private Idaho/4 Minute Hate- not sure if im remembering the name right here...

Whatamess!

Yeah - Creed and Smile (Hehe Dreamy bass player - whaddaya reckon AccidenProne?)

Published by BrotherRat at 3:57pm on Fri 2nd June 2006.

Immaculate Deception - wow! With Seb Steed on vox... We did a couple of gigs with them when we were at Long Road. We shared drummers, and played an 18th birthday party that rozzers and council broke up due to drunkenness and things on fire (I think). We still have a recording of that gig, including an a capella version of Jim'll Fix It theme tune once we'd been told to turn everything off...

Very Rocknroll...

Did some of Imma Dec go on to be in Creed?

Some of Immaculate Deception went on to form Smyle, where I joined 'em on bass. None of Creed were in the band that I recall, though me memory ain't what it used to be.

Hey Wingnut. I remember 'Thirteenth Chime', in fact I have their 'Fire' single on my shelf. I came to know of them because I met Mick Hand, who sang for them, on a building site. He was a welding apprentice at the time I think.

immaculate deception (or reincarnation of) did a gig or 2 the other month, with Jay and Daz back doing something with a guy from london on drums and Alternations Dj Kickwit whacking out a bit of bass. Now Jay has moved down to london though so am not sure of anymore.
Daz drinks down the portland a lot and still wants to do music though

Thirteenth Chime were actually from Haverhill, but gigged in Cambridge most of the time.

Here's another one for you - The Mood Assassins. I played very briefly with them - wish I'd stayed because they were really good - Phil Darke on bass was a great player. Stormed covered one of their songs at Strawberry Fair - I never heard a local band covering another local band's song before or since.

The suspense is killing me James!!

As a Cambridge musical aside...
I saw The Ruts at the Corn Exchange whenever, and the support came on... a ska band who played an instrumental for their opener. Nice enough sound, I thought. Then as they launched into their second number a bloody great fat bloke came onstage and started dancing around like a lunatic. Of course I hadn't heard of Bad Manners before......

Published by FergR at 10:23am on Sun 4th June 2006.

Stormed fans (and interested parties).... your time has come... i have 8 tracks up at http://www.alternationmedia.com (just a spare url i had so i have used that), if we can get hold of a few more tracks from some other bands, i can look at stylingit properly and adding some graphics (maybe band pics would be good too?)

The tracks are mp3's recorded at 256k so the quality should be good and the size of them isn't too silly for downloading. The 8 Stormed tracks come in at 58Mb total so broadband is probably handy for them.
You should (if using windows) be able to stream them in your browser but it is more advisable to right click them and "save as..." and that won't bollocks up my bandwidth too much either!

Be interesting to see what people think of them, i had forgotten quite how weird and wonderful they were blending so many different influences. Once again thanks to Rich for these tracks.

Enjoy!

The Fisher Hall Mashed Potato Incident by Mark Russell (drummer)

Fisher hall gig with Reggae/ska line up of bands. There are skin heads
and dreadies in the audience all looking a bit ugly at each other. A
local complete Heid-the-ball called Chocolate Box Mackenzie (AKA
'Chocky') arrives in Your Dinner's dressing room with 2 buckets of
mashed potato, with string, sweetcorn and blue food colouring added, and
a packet of paper plates. With no further ado, he starts to dish out
portions of goo and goes out handing them around the audience. As you
can imagine, most of the audience are going 'what the fuck am I supposed
to do with this?', and starting to look at the other audience members to
pick out a hopeful target. Unfortunately for us (Your Dinner), we are
just about to go onstage at this time, so as we do, a sudden dawning
occurrs to the entire audience simultaneously, and we got through the
opening number (probably 'Iron Claw') to a constant pelting of blue goo.
Though we did our best to clean up afterwards, there was still a lot of
potato and string hanging from the roof at the end, which caused the
church (who own Fisher hall) to take a dim view of Rock and Roll gigs
from that point on. Can't say as I blame them though. I always felt that
the gig might have turned ugly between skins and rastas, and that a coat
of mash prevented a few bloody noses on the night, so well worth it in
the end I thought; ....but that was the early eighties for you!

Hi James
I have a compilation album made in 1982 of Cambridge bands on Wimp Records. It?s called ?Honey For Tea? and was put out by a friend of mine David Gower. The bands featured are:

The Great Divide (Boo Hewerdine on Vocals)
The Lonely
Your Dinner
Sindy and the Action Men
Pure Thought
The Agents
The Amyl Dukes
The Rapiers
Hondo
Su Lyn Band
Seven Fifty Four
The Innocent Bystanders

I?ve also got the Your Dinner 12? single Power Over You / Compulsion, from 1984
and probably Cambridge?s first Rap record made by Chris Mann (The Stormed?s drummer) in 1987.
If any of them are of interest let me know and I?ll send you copies.

I?m thinking Bassman is on the case with the Your Dinner / Apes in Control material? if so could you see if Mark?s still got a copy of the Dinners Live Tape ? Alive! - even in the Belly of an Alien? They were a truly fantastic live band and although none of the recordings I?ve heard really capture their energy this came closer than most.

I?ve also got (somewhere) the Pluck This live tape and The 13th Chime Single ?The Coffin Maker? (witness the birth of Goth!).

Back to Wingnut's comment - yep Davy Graham rescued some of the old masters from Makka studios when it shut.

Master tapes also exist for Killdares, Man from Uncle, and probably Nimrods according to Mark. White Dope - I passed yr comments re Live Dinners tape, will let ya know ASAP. Have also passed him link to this thread so he can get involved!

Awesome stuff.... i should actually get proper organised with this... i have a big list of people to mail and i think i may need to get some more bandwidth (or reduce the sample rate of the mp3's).
I don't have a tape deck anymore, so anybody who is able to aid in converting tapes to either mp3 or cd would be awesome.

Blimey - this is brilliant - so many names from the past. Device were a great band (Do The Wallpaper Scraper - yeah) as were 13th Chime and Your Dinner (I still have live tape and single).

Many many moons ago I was the first drummer in Stormed (Storm The Dorms for a couple of gigs). The original line up also featured Bill (only one gig I think) and Michael who had both been in What Noise - my last gig with them was somewhat bizarrely supporting Hanoi Rocks at the Sea Cadet Hall. Then I played with the Mood Assassins for a couple of years (great band). After that, having been playing drum stool tag with him for some years, I was in House Grinder with Chris Mann and that was it for my Cambridge musical life.

Has anybody out there got any of the old Corn Exchange posters? I'm particularly looking for the Buzzcocks/Slits poster from March 1979 as it was the first gig I ever went to

Wow, Dr Rhythm, you remember Do The Wallpaper Scraper - that was such a great band to be in at that time, shame we broke up prematurely.

You drummed with Phil Darke then - what a bass player - what an all-round musician in fact.

Saw Device quite a few times - mainly at The Great Northern (now there was a venue). You could usually get served in there even if you were 14 which was a major bonus.

Yeah - certainly did play with Phil Darke (in more than one band) - great musician and an all round good bloke. I've just forwarded him the link to this so he can laugh at his enduring fame!

All this talk of Linton reminds me of my first proper band, Necromancer, which was based in the village. We were sort of metal and seemed to play mostly at biker events even though we did play the Great Northern a few times. Lead guitarist was the excellent Ralph Honey who really should have gone on to greater things - could have been a speed metal legend!

Still go back from time to time but it's a bit rubbish due to the fact that there are now only 3 pubs when there used to be 7 - happy days!!

Published by Dr Rhythm at 12:03pm on Sat 17th June 2006.

Chris recorded us two or three times there. I bumped into Demmy in Brighton, where I live, a few years ago (Blimey, probably about 10, now I think about it). Good to hear his stuff on his myspace.

Anyway, I'd be grateful if you'd pass this on to the power that be. I'd love to get a copy of whatever he's got knocking about.

It was held just off Milton Road with the line up supposed to be Stranglers, Wolfgang Press, Jah Wobble, The Bible and The Mood Assassins - the organisers expected at least 5,000 people . Sadly it coincided with Hurricane Charlie blowing in from the Atlantic (check your weather records for the details) and was a total utter failure - nobody came and only the Mood Assasins (my band) got to play on the main stage because it became so dangerous. The organisers decided that the event would continue in the beer tent but the really stupid thing was that they only had the standard licensing of the day (12-2.30 and 6-11) so there was this big gap in the middle of the day with nothing to do/drink). Eventually, once the bar opened we played again, some guy with a guitar (Richard Heap?) played and The Bible put in a good set - guess there were about 100 people there max.

The only plus point was that a picture of us braving the storm made the front of the CEN - big stage with literally 5 people watching in a muddy field - I have the photo on the wall in my office as a reminder of how things can go completely tits up.

Did anybody else attend this very rubbish event?

What a fabulous thread - I've gone all tingly. It's all so early 80's. Obviously remember necromancer, moodies, killdares, amyl dukes - my legendary brother-in-law Buckett was drummer for this band and Sindy and The action men - anyone old enough to remember elephunt? Rapiers, perfect Vision. Roaring Boys (!) Your Dinner. Blimey there's loads. There is a rock family tree somewhere on the net - I found it not long ago - it had originally been printed in the c e n years ago.

I was there, it was my bass player who got hammered... nasty night, guy on the door with a wooden mallet whacking everyone who was trying to flee the violence.

I can remember it like it was yesterday... Upstarts roadies throwing punks into the river... then dancing to the taped music before the bands... knocking into everyone and being assholes... they knocked into an American guy who pounded the crap outr of one of them, then it kicked off and the roadies got slapped... then notorious Upstarts roadie Ginger Kev went up to the durmmer of the band and got a hammer off of him... jumped off the stage running towards me and my friends... swung the hammer, I ducked and then he swung it again hitting my mate in the temple and damn near killing him. I remember seeing him in the ladies room with a hole in his head and a girl trying to stem the flow of flood.

That was a bad night... I stayed and watched the band but all my friends left...

Paul was in hospital for weeks, had to have his skull opened up and pressure eleviated from his brain... I think he got out of music... we all drifted soon after...

I've got a recording of the Amyl Dukes performing at the old Station Hotel (Station Road) in about 1982. I think it's actually a composite of recordings from two gigs (about an hour in total). It was originally on tape (copied from a tape which Martyn Rae [sp?], lead singer, lent me at the time) but I later copied it to CD and now have it as MP3s so it's in good condition and easily distributed. In principle, I would be happy to share it with anyone who is interested (or post on a web site somewhere). But would be happier doing so if I knew that Martyn was OK about that. Is he out there still? (Is he still singing with the Frigidaires who I see are still around) [You can tell that I no longer live in Cambridge!]. Anyway, thoughts anyone? I played trumpet (pretty badly) for Bhagwan Fresh and the Gurus of Jive and Colonel Hathi's Dawn Patrol so think that I have the most letters from two band names possible.
I remember fondly Infernal Death,The Surfing druids,The Sardines, Perfect Circle, Apes in Control (yes Demi does rock). Oh God my memory has gone. Must have been all those DoDos and lager at the sea cadet hall. What a lot of fun it all was. Thanks to all from the sea cadets', the Burleigh and the Rock comp for some great teenage nights. By the way, Tim "Love" Lee from Bhagwan Fresh is still knocking out corking tunes from New York. Look up Tummy Touch records

I've been sorting through a mountain of CDs and found a few old Cambridge band releases

Virgin Suicides, Miss Black America (well, more Bury), Neo, various REPEAT compilations.

Some pretty good tunes among them, it has to be said.

However, I also found some of those Wild Skies CDs and they were, overall, a bit ropey.

Published by David at 10:18am on Wed 11th March 2009.

The Wild Skies compilations would have made a pretty good single CD. Four of the buggers definitely stretched it a bit thin!

Published by SB___ at 10:19am on Wed 11th March 2009.

On the Wild Skies fenland (? I think) CD there's a 'rap' tune that CRS* know off by heart and perform privately most times we meet. I really hope G4 isn't a WANer - it was comedy genius.

There was also a song about 9/11. Erkorama.

And then there was us and Stars of Aviation. Can't remember much else, but yes, it was dodgy. We enjoyed the studio time though.

I was one of the founding members and played with them for 2 years.
Some tracks can be heard on the Spaceward Studios site
New digitally remastered album on CD
Re-mastered and produced at Fast Tracks Studios

It was basically a reggae band and a rock band fused together. Some of the tracks were influenced by ska which was very big at the time.
It was a great live band and were regulars at Strawberry Fair.

All the guys in This Replica (except me) had older brothers in another very popular Cambridge band at that time called Nutmeg. I say 'Cambridge' but it was actually the era of the Soham Invasion. God I miss those times. I think Im gonna go kill myself. Life is so long and weird.

I also high pass filtered about 15 seconds of White Heat by Nic Endo to surreptitiously implant the bells which are there 2 time 2 and also the intro to track 22 for Ninyo-Hime by Rie Tanaka. It was all about hidden meanings, every track has some deeper relevance and the order is all important too (not that anyone but you will probably ever listen to it). Maybe I'll upload it as an mp3 next month. The annoying thing about comps is hearing things weeks after that you'd have liked to have included, like the American national anthem sung in Japanese (at the end of the soft porn cult film 'The Glamourous Life of Sachiko Hanai')

that year was won by Jason Smith's band The Cherry Orchard... Bike Thieves were second...

we were expelled at the semis for having a pro in the band... didn't read the rules... or sorta of ignored them... a fuss was made by a judge... Tom ran on and stage dived when we were playing that year and a year or two later joined the band!

well, the cowboy shtick kinda bugs me with that memory - alot of that daft sort of wild west irony happening back then. Ironically, The Bun Shop (St. Tibb's Row) was not on the Cambridge 'Dead pubs' list.
(I'll second the-management's 'Cambridge Arms' comment, too.)

Finger in the Dyke were a 4 piece... I just don't recall the drummer and bass player...
Jack McGoogan didn't put the toffs bit in his shout, it was from about 1975 and it was in a thick Glaswegian accent "we've 'ad your money, now piss off"...
he used to play footy for Partick Thistle and his son had trials with a top Scottish team...
.
first time I heard "we've 'ad your money, now piss off" was at the Weathervane Perne Road in the first band I was in back in 1967...

jokes aside I have never paid to play even when playing in London regularly but I knew a lot that did when putting on their shows and filling a coach and trekking up to the smoke and getting zilch, "yeah great man, we'll see if we can pay you next time" would be the promoters response... i remember one London venue/promoter trying that on with one particular Cambridgeshire band and their 'helper' and his mates 'persuaded' the promoter to pay up.
.
as a kid playing in Cambridge there were 20 odd pubs putting on music regularly and paying the bands... I remember playing alongside Mr Lucifer, Tuesdays Child, Little Women etc... the Weathervane was a good payer.

Funny how times change. In the sixties and very early seventies you never needed to play a pub at all in Cambridge area.

Every weekend there were dances at ALL the village halls and the various social clubs.

In cambridge you had the guildhall the Corn Exchange and the Dorothy Ballroom running dances every weekend.

Sad to see how little of that scene remains (I.E. NONE!)

Hi All

I lived in Cambridge form 1976 - 82. Whilst there I got to know all the contemporary bands of the time. I lived in a house in Abbey Rd, (Sic) with Clive Kilby, (Brilliant guitarist) and Douglas Workman, keyboard - (Played with Hondo for a while) & Yann Le Gouec, (Now famous Graphic Artist, then at CCAT and excellent Jazz guitarist). We used to Jam regularly with Tim Corcoran, who was the drummer for The Flow, which also had Clive Kilby on guitar, Finn on bass and Mike Henderson on vocals, occasionally Steve used to play sax. Demis (Vocals), Neil, (Guitar), Chris on bass and Chinese George on drums - which made up the Your Dinner line up - all from Edinburgh. The Dolly Mixtures and the their older Brothers, who also had a Punk band & Hondo used to pop in from time to time as did all the 'Cool People' of the time. We all basically grew up together; these were heady days - what I can remember of them!! I will never forget. I feel fortunate to have been close friends with all these amazing people.

Clive is still about as is Tim. Tim plays in the Freddie Hall Band and others. The Brother of the Dolly Mixtures was Andrew Boar, he was in the Users and he's still about as is the guitarist from the Users, Chris Free, now iwith his new band The Sound of Pop Art. Sara Onyette from The Cherry Orchard is playing some bass on his new album. I think Demmy from Your Dinner is still about.

Hard to believe that a band has been missed from this thread but I've just realised that there is no mention of Zoom - excellent musicians who played deeply unfashionable jazz funk in the early 80s. They did, however, cover the always excellent "Brick House" which was a real set saver!! Chris Maitland, later of Porcupine Tree, was the drummer.

I've been thinking for some time that it'd be really nice to try and tie together all of these little stories and histories and make a Cambridge Bands wiki site. The stuff that is rejected from wikipedia.org for not being 'notable' enough is often, like many of the recollections on this thread, the most interesting.

I realise this would probably be a Sisyphean feat, but then the collaborative nature of wikis might give it the potential over time to grow into something quite cool? Anyone a) know wiki markup (was it the Silent one who used to contribute and edit wikiedia in the past?) or b) think this is an idea of any worth?

Published by arthurCRS at 6:19pm on Mon 10th December 2012.

I did used to edit wiki a lot but don't any more. Learning the markup is easy, you just edit another page and copy the formatting for your own article.

I would probably do some editing on this if someone created the initial page to edit.

Wikipedia even kyboshed the Levinson Press Report with a false entry...

seems Levinson copied and pasted stuff from Wikipedia without checking...

'Lord Justice Leveson’s report on UK press ethics last week featured the statement:
The Independent [newspaper] was founded in 1986 by the journalists Andreas Whittam Smith, Stephen Glover and Brett Straub, and was published by Newspaper Publishing plc.'

Whittam Smith and Glover were two of the three founders - but who is this Brett Straub? The name was inserted into the Wikipedia page for The Indie in October 2011 and, as often happens, left uncorrected for a year.

The Telegraph put in some leg work and discovered Straub is a recent architecture graduate of Pomona College in Los Angeles County. A friend at the college inserted his name on several Wikipedia pages, according to Straub, crediting him with not only founding a UK newspaper but also inventing Coca-Cola.

Californian Straub, 25, told The Telegraph:

I don't even read newspapers. I graduated college eight months ago and the biggest thing we learned is don't trust Wikipedia for facts.

That’s advice Lord Leveson and his team could use.

British newspapers have fallen for several hoaxes derived from their dumb dependence on Jimbo Wales’s Big Bag of Trivia.'

Wow - lots of info about the people & grassroots music in the mid 80s! Not sure if this chat is still that active....

Did a lot of photography with the Cambridge Venue Group and local bands 85 - 87.... and just looked through an exhibition I did back then for the venue campaign ....
(think Mark Russell was involved somehow..)

Does anyone recall the Thakes incident on East Road - just opposite the Boat Race?
Have some photos & story from the night (30th Nov 85) that helped spark the CVG campaign mentioned above... there was quite an active mix sound -set up at the time
and quite a few un-scripted music events...

Recall that Apes in Control were big, have some gig-pictures of Dr Skull, Apes in Control the Ways to Move concert (inc Dave), Dr Soul, Hondo & Sunugal ( + audiences) that may be worth sharing again...

Some bands noted from various posters from that time :
Dr Skull & the MegaBone Orchestra + the Killdares : Sea Cadets 15th Feb 86
Dr Skull, Double Zero's, Children of Some Tradition : St Mathews School, 19 April 86
Hondo & Sunugal : Parkside School Feb 7th 86
Dr Soul & Soul Trader : 23 May, 86
In Flight, Burleigh Arms : 2 July 86
Dr Soul, Apes in Control, Blatant Beast : Coleridge Community College, 12th July 86
Mood Assassins, Blind Lemons, PC Freakbody & the Allstar
Bastard Squad : Sea Cadets, 16 Aug 86.
Misty in Roots, Hondo, Sky Ray Dummy : Corn Exchange, 31st Jan 87(prob?)

Left cambridge in 87/88: it is great to hear the venue campaign eventually lead to the Junction... in 89 I think. Be good to hear more how/ if the Junction filled the local music scene music gap of the mid 80's...

Lots of info.... should have a go at scanning in some photos...

Interesting post John,

I certainly do remember the Thakes incident in East Road (Cycle store?) – though I was only 15 at the time - and just about to start to write for Scene & Heard (remember that?) only about year afterwards...

I’d always understood things got quite bitter and twisted between the CVG and those who ran the Junction once it opened. I’ll not name names, but if I recall correctly the Cambridge Venue Group had one member appointed as part of the then new venue management/governance, but ultimately they felt they found themselves ‘forced out’ soon after the Junction opened. Overall, I recall a lot of CVG members (although I was involved in the group directly) at the time, felt that the core values/organising principles of the campaign were very quickly brushed aside once the venue was up and running. Certainly I recall feeling that there quickly seemed to be an “us” and ”them” culture between the staff brought into manage the new venue (from outside Cambridge) and those involved with the CVG and other interests in the Cambridge music scene.

I was still running gigs at Sea Cadet Hall (with a chap called Tim Cole!) up to, and for a while after the Junction opened and certainly the main reason for us stopping, was the feeling amongst those who governed the SCH venue, was the Junction would finally fill the gap the Sea Cadet Hall had long offered as a 'mid size non-pub' Cambridge music venue, so the Sea Cadet Hall could, and did, finally end its long association with local and national music.

I only promoted one gig at the Junction in it’s early years (Ozric Tentacles) which sold out easily, and saw tickets being touted outside for three or four times the face value, but despite this – and ensuring that at least one local band got a support slot – I certainly didn’t feel that at the time as local promoters we were welcome to return. But then again, in fairness to the Junction I was, quite frankly an arrogant little bastard (only in my late teens – by way of excuse!) in those days (and belated apologies to all that I annoyed!), so probably didn’t do myself any favours when we looked at booking again.

That said, I always felt there was a big frustration amongst local bands in the early months/years of The Junction that they could never get support slots for the national bands appearing, even with the venue’s in-house promotions, so local acts found themselves resigned to appearing at a few “local band” feature nights (I remember attending one shortly before my Ozric gig - with The Dear Johns* – featuring Ben Miller of Death in Paradise, Armstrong & Miller fame etc and also featuring another local band – Shades of Indifference – remember them?) – I remember feeling at the time local nights weren’t that well run by the venue’s as in-house promotions – and I honestly felt they at the time they were almost ‘set to fail’ - such was perceived resistance to the CVG et al. I think eventually local bands mostly just had to ultimately resign themselves to only being given a gig to play in the bar area.I also recall (though the memory may cheat!) that in those early days of The Junction – the venue routinely argued that the lack of local support slots for in-house promotion of national acts was down to the policies of the agencies that stopped the Junction’s own in-house promoters that were booking the national acts that prevented the booking of additional local acts on the bill. I do recall being outraged by this at the time – and I do have to say, that as a local promoter who often used London agencies to book national acts (Ride at the Sea Cadet Hall being one example) that I never ever, ever once found the slightest problem with any national booking agency letting me putting on an additional local support act – even on package tours.

That said, I am long retired from the music scene – doubtless things have changed hugely and The Junction is much more supportive of local bands nowadays!

*I think I still have a copy of The Dear Johns gig with Ben Miller on VHS video in my loft – as the video company that ultimately filmed the Ozric gig used their local gig as a technical test shoot before the Ozric gig.

I'm going to have to defend the Junction on one count. Inhouse promo or not, while some agents will let you put a support on, all to often they will tell you who's playing, especially once a band is at a certain level. It's a constant source of frustration, but I do get locals on larger shows from time to time, although rarely.

Sounds like I have some catching up to do here!

Havent even been to the Junction yet - (moved to study in Lancaster)!
but def on my to-do list next time im in the area...

Here is a photo from Parkside (school) from 86. Quite like this one - Mark Russell is at the drums and Demmy is just visible on the right at the front of the stage.

Quite a fun night if I remember.
Scan is a bit scratchy - the originals and negatives are much clearer.
Think we hosted another couple of gigs at Parkside (remember photographing
Hondo & Sunugal)- but it was a bit noisy for the neightbouring residents so it wasnt a permanet solution - part of the argument for the venue.

Looking at the Junction website - sounds like an active scene now, still with some type of youth / Introducing type theme, so guess some continuity in some way. What a different
time compared to back then: there is so much choice of venue to see music now.

There was even talk / sketches about building the Junction / Venue in the roundabout at the end of East Road: the old Cattle market seems more practical - and has allowed expansion space. At the time the pictures were very compelling / imaginative for both.

More on Thakes in a while : yes remeber the Scene & Heard. I did some news articles in CCAT's Front Page magazine about the events then also, was 18 back then.

Does anyone have any sound tracks of the sounds of these 80's bands?
I have a Way to Move Tape some where, even an Apes in Control one here - next need to find a tape deck. There was a guy - Phil who did a lot of video's then also - rode a BMW trail bike I think - is he still about ?

Thakes85

Marc - that is great to hear such a clear picture that there was some mixed / ambivolent feelings when the Junction started up. Part of the music scene then was - well 'edgy and unscripted disco events' you could say and I did wonder how well this would map into a long term commercial venue. I hear what you are saying about the lack of slots for local bands - can imagine that would have caused a lot of frustration.

The Sea Cadets was such a fun venue, yet some how it felt out of the way and not very permanent- I recall many a time heading up along the Cam to the gigs there.

Yes Thakes was a disused cycle shop (see the picture).

85 was quite a year, what with live aid and the ability of music to motivate.

Be good to read more of the local history on this -thanks Dr Rhythm for pointing to the Central Library : this chat room is doing a pretty good job though...

To add to this archive - here is the part of the feeling of the time captured on the Thakes night.
I wrote this upinto the Front Page Student Magazine, December 85, so this is 'fresh' from
1985...
Be good to hear other peoples opinins about these events - is this how you remeber it?

Start quote
"Near Riot as Party Banned

On Saturday 30th November, East Road was closed to traffic due to a disturbance rarely seen in Cambridge. Three hundred people of differing age groups had gathered with the intent of going to a party which was to be held in the now-empty squat in Thakes bike shop. The police presence holding them back consisted of about eighty men and women. The road sides were also covered with at least twenty police vehicles.

Why was this happening? Chief Superintendent, Harry Gelsthorpe stated: "As far as we know this was a disco that went wrong and too many people wanted access to East Road".

The organisers were arrested for 'stealing electricitiy'. From then the crowd began to swell. The police presence was 'to protect the disco equipment inside the building' according to the Chief Superintendent. As the tension built up a van was brought into block the entrance. The crowd pushed back at the police line. One shouting person was pulled to the ground and arrested - he was bundled into the van. The crowd became even more tense as banging came from inside the van. The pavement by the van was cleared by three police dogs on a leash. One man was attacked and bitten. This caused the crowd to compact even more and as the van squeezed out, a bottle smashed on the windscreen; people were trampled and crused in the chaos. The van was replaced immediately by twenty policemen linking arms and forming a barrier. One officer commented 'I'm here to protect my lads'. At 2:30, after three hours of unrest, the remaining crowd was dispersed by a threat of 'arrest for causing an obstruction and disturbance'.

During the three hours of unrest, thirteen police vehicles were damaged, including cars with slashed tyres; seven peole were arrested and three policemen were injured - it isnt known how many bystanders were hurt. After this the disco equipment was returned to the owners house by the police. Some locals watching the disturbance said they were infuriated by the polices attitude and language towards them when told to leave.

The squat had become a 'unique place for local music in Cambridge'. Local bands had played over the three previous weeks. Many other bands were also showing some interest in this new outlet for music. It started as a disco, covering the squatters leaving party: this had lasted all weekend - the atmosphere tainted by a couple of eleven-year-old vandals who were not welcome but entered and smashed the windows.

The Labour Councillor representing the local Council flat residents, lobbied for an immediate demolition of the building on receiving complaints about the music. Local residents stated that this was by no means a unanimous opinion."

Great to hear about all the influences and linkages we have.

Didnt do the Ely gig - sounds interesting.

Based on the rave music links, thanks for the pointers Mark - had a relook at the posters and material from 85/86. There was quite a bit of early disco-deck music happening:
most of the gigs I covered had a line-up and also a 'disco' advertised in one way or another. Here is an example 'billing' from the Colerage Community College gig 12th July (86). Dr Soul, Apes, Blatant Beast - plus 'Tone Def' sounds the disco part and talk of a Chalk Pits Party.

Trying the remember the music influences from that time that I heard:
in addition to rock beats of the time think there was Sly & Robbie, James Brown, some regge. Can anyone recall the early hip-hop disco deck artists that the like of Tone Def blended together so well....? Guess that the happenings of 85/86 were at the roots of this music/ rave scene in the Cambridge area.

Been listening to some eighty's sounds today on radio 6, great...some more photos in a mo...

This gig pretty much filled up the whole school hall.

Was quite something - also for me as this was my old secondary school so had some extra meaning in a way....

... and back to one of these above themes: then there were the disco sounds; typically a couple of turntables, a stack of vinyls and the 'disco sound crew' : it was tough to photograph this and capture the atmosphere of the moment. Here is one example from Parkside I think, or perhps Collerage, standing around the disco-deck, during the performace / sounds. Rough backdrop poster stapled to the wall, flashing lights on the turn-tables on the, thk-thk-thk- beats. Does anyone else have any other recollections

Probably was Tone Def.

Plus all the grey tones...! Know what you mean ...I'm missing hearing the sounds also, just saw a link to drskul.org with some music/ mp3.

Back then it was simply easier to take black & white and develop these myself (at the Cambridge Darkroom - did a lots & lots of film), plus it linked with contemporary art/ documentary photography at the time so was part of that theme.

Would typically take the pictures and develop them next day. Have a few colour slides of Dr Soul, Sunugal and Ways to Move and Sea Cadets...as experimented with these at bit, lets see how these look / scan in ...

Nobody is really doing much band wise but Carlos (guitar) and Phil (bass) are still very much playing and involved with music. Paul (percussion) went on to be a top local DJ and I'm sure he's up to something. Dave moved up to the Midlands and the last I heard of him he was playing in a band called Flaming June but that was quite a few years ago now. I at least went out on a reasonable level - last proper gig I played was at the Shepherds Bush Empire supporting the Hoodoo Gurus.

Hi All : -) My first post (be gentle). I came across the website trying to find any trace of Sunugal, the mid 80's African/Reggae band. I had to wade through a whole load of pages of stuff about African clothing. There was a page on Facebook about a musical collective of the same name...anyway, reading through the thread I noticed several references to, what must have become known as the 'Thakes Incident' in 1985. I haven't read all of the posts in this thread, but I do remember it. In fact the 'incident' (sic) happened twice. The first ... sorry, I don't like the word 'incident', 'event'(?) was a great party. Thakes was occupied for the night, some great sounds were played and much fun was had by all (this might be my perception, maybe some people had a bummer, but I didn't know about it, and sorry if you are one of these 'could have been' people). I guess the 'incident', which everybody refers to, is what happened when a second party was attempted a week after. That time the police were ready and had blocked off the entire street :( Things got a bit hectic, and I nearly ended up getting savaged by a police dog. Some stern looks put him off, but he was definitely up for ripping my jeans off at one point. That night I had the pleasure of playing live at The Boat Race. It was (kind of) billed as a support gig for the would have been party, over the road after pub hours. The gig was a throw-together jam with the Guitarist from Your Dinner (his name escapes me now, but I do remember the night he shaved off his locks at a Uni Gig for a Charity, possible Live Aid, I can't remember), the Drummer from Hondo, myself on Bass and an old friend, Eddy Moon, who I know has since passed away, on vocals. It was great to see the photo's, and find out that I can visit a dim, misty fragment of my own memory on the web. Maybe someone else remembers the Boat Race before the near riot outside Thakes. I know I can't remember anything about the party of the week before...such is life...Cheers : -)

Aha! I've been published, excellent : -) I've now finished reading the entire thread, and there is a lot here that I remember. I'm pretty sure I can remember the photography exhibition that vicky-the-viking posted about? but I didn't get to see it. If it was the same exhibition I got to hear about (at the Darkroom Gallery in Gwydir Street?) I would really appreciate a chance to see it. Were a lot of the photographs taken because the demolition of the Kite was imminent? Maybe that's wrong, but if it's period Cambridge, I definitely vote for getting it on-line somewhere.

Published by Foxsch at 3:14am on Sun 16th August 2015.

I'm going to write some more for the thread. I hope I don't get a ticket for spamming, considering I've not given anybody the oppo to reply yet. It is that reading through the list of names, places and stuff, has dug up so many memories, I have a burning need to share them : -) Going back to Sunugal, does anybody have any idea as to whether they ever recorded anything? I knew the percussionist (Paul) for the band, and met the vocalist a number of times. He spoke French Senegalese, which made communication a bit tricky, but I do remember that they toured Senegal at one point, which impressed me greatly (1983-4-5 - a bit hazy). I saw them live once (got a free ticket from Paul), but I'm fairly sure it wasn't when they supported Hondo at the Parkside College gig mentioned in the thread. As far as I recall it was at one of the Uni venues near the Backs somewhere. They were excellent. Another band that should be on the list for the thread: Rhythmic Itch. Can't remember if I ever saw them play live, but I am sure I got to hear them practice. The Vocalist (Tracey?) and Guitarist were friends of friends and very talented. If you'd ever heard them you'd remember. There was one time Your Dinner gathered us all up into their Studio (that would have been Makka, correct me if I get some of the details wrong), so they could film some footage for a single release. I'm trusting my memory when it tells me that that is the single mentioned in the thread. I'm curious as to whether anybody remembers whether the promo video for the single ever got finished? On the missing bands from the Cambridge list: Dogma Cats. Not strictly central Cambridge, more the villages south and about. I knew Ed Harbud, the Drummer (he played one of those hexagonal pad electronic kits), they liked to be known as the Pils Boys, the bands favourite tipple. The first band I ever played for supported them at Barrington Village Hall in 1979. That Band don't really merit getting on to the list, we were all meant to be revising for 'O' and 'CSE' level examinations at the time, but we did record a two track demo at Kite Studio's. I remember it well as we were able to pull in Chris Mann on Drums. The two track was duly sent off for John Peel's perusal, and failed the grade for a Cherry Red Compilation of Cambridge Bands, which did get finished and released. As you'll have noticed, I too can Waffle for england (please notice the pun), so I'll sign off (you can notice that pun too if it makes you smile), with another 'did you know' appeal. Does anybody remember Robert Kemp - Bob the Beard as he preferred? One of (sic) the best guitarists I ever had the pleasure of playing with. We set up an impromptu stage at Free Fennit in 198* and played merrily to a rapt audience all weekend. Some of the Battle of the Bands thread writers might remember him - Cheers : -)

As local gig promoter and former pretentious music journalist from back in the day I remember Jezz Quayle (spelling!) well….

I recall putting on the The Herbs final/reunion gig at the Sea Cadet Hall (can’t recall who they were supporting)… They did a pretty mean cover of Louie Louie that night with Jez on backing vocals…

I have a pretty substantial collection of old demo tapes etc in my loft but don’t recall having anything by the Surfin’ Druids except for a vinyl appearance on “The Cambridge Album” with a track called “Books about fashion”

Also can someone please take the lease to the Great Northern, retro fit it back to how it was in the late 70's (with egg boxes) and reopen it as a music venue?

I don't, but if you're in London tomorrow you can see Dolly Mixture do a Q&A after a showing of the doc 'Take Three Girls'

For those that remember Blue Seude News and Scene and Heard magazines (which covered Cambridge music from 1983 to 1992) they are available at www.peevedrecords.co.uk/bsn.htm and www.peevedrecords.co.uk/sandh.htm.

Bits of Fish Turned Human turned into Snap! Cabinet. One member of FTH was Jonathan Romney (now better known as a film critic) see https://archive.varsity.co.uk/630.pdf. Dave Bragg, a frequent contributor to both BSN and S&H, was the bass player.

To quote from BSN Issue 18 (http://www.peevedrecords.co.uk/pdf/bsn_issue18.pdf):

SNAP! CABINET are, as the poster, says "Built from the bones of Fish Turned Human" - the band that our own Dave Bragg once played with under the stage name of Jimmy Olsen. The Snaps' (or should that be Snappies') line-up consists of Philip on vocals, Hank on sax, bass ad keyboards and Lionel on guitar and bass, with a little help from their friend the tape recorder.

I'm guessing that the names are all made up.

Montreal were the precursor to Spiritwalk. The vocalist, Ian Docherty, was certainly comon to both bands.
