new lappy

i need a new laptop and really have no idea where to procure such a thing. I used to buy my hardware from that shop at the end of mill road next to oxfam but since its demise I'm not sure if anything has replaced it. I don't need anything fancy although it would be nice to have something that doesn't take fucking forever to load. I could buy new but again, I'm not sure the best place to go as I don't even really know what spec I need. any advice/top tips appreciated.

Thanks.

The most important question is, what do you want to do with it?

If it's just for web browsing / email / word processing / a bit of Photoshop then you can get away with a much cheaper machine than if you want to play the latest 3d games on it or something like that.

Yeah, I won't be gaming on it, just using it for the basics that you outlined.

Then I wouldn't suggest buying new. Spend a couple of hundred quid on a decent second-hand / refurb one.

The place on Mill Road was called Computer Resale: http://www.computer-resale.co.uk/ - it looks like they might still be going, despite not being in that shop any more. You could do worse than to send them an email or give them a call, and see what they've got.

Nice one, cheers fella.

Any suggestions as to the spec?

See what they've got! You'll care about RAM and CPU speed, less so about storage or graphics; but find a decent second-hand shop and talk to them.

honestly? for "a couple of hundred quid" you can buy a shiny new laptop from tesco. seriously. my last four or so laptops have all come from tesco, and i guarantee i've had nothing but positive experience here. they've all been two to three hundred quid, do what they say on the tin, and - best of all - are brand spanking new. as in, decent manufacturer guarantee, consumer protection, and all that good stuff.

yes. i've had bad experiences with second hand laptops. cash converters can fuck right off.

Thanks for that mister landy.

This is what they've got:

he HP 6360b 2nd gen i5, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, 13" screen. £169

Dell Latitude 6220: 2nd gen i5 4GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive; smaller
machine, no CD drive, 12.5" screen. £179

They're all running Win7 pro64.

If you like. Personally I prefer to buy from shops who have some idea of what they're selling.
