FIRE FIRE

I'm trying to compile a list of buildings with planning applications where there's been a suspicious fire.

I heard that the owner of the B&B just up from the Golden Hind wants to build ten flats on that land. Then there was the water tower (?) close to the station that had a dodgy fire. I know there's been many more.

Spiller's Mill.

I seem to remember the fire was eventually blamed on someone doing arc welding in the basement of a disused building at 2am in the morning, and this was seen as entirely non-suspicious.

Ha, quite. that's just what people do, innit.

I think Silent Rob is going to be able to highlight quite a few cases where there's have been suspicious fires.

That depends how many bribes he's received, doesn't it? ;)

I don't think the hotel fire near the Golden Hind was suspicious, was it?

There was that empty house on Chesterton Road that is now flats, didn't that go on fire mysteriously beforehand?

only in that there's been an application to develop ten or so flats since the fire that all the nearby residents are against. This is what got me thinking of the whole fire followed by planning applications thang.

Is that the one near the bottom of Alpha Road? I think Smithy/ispeak was very active in campaigning against this development but I didn't know there had been a fire there.

Who remember's the party pub on mill road that got turned into two fast food outlets next to the old maternity hospital? That started with a suspicious fire.

It's rare for them to support one.

I didn't know about the flats application near the Golden Hind, B-bam. But went past on a double decker bus about a month ago and thought it looked very odd that the roofs had been taken off, yet the rest of the building looked intact. Didn't know it had supposedly been a fire that caused it. Hmmn.

Hmm, indeed MissR! I've just discovered it's 14 flats they want to build...

The Tivoli had a fire and a planning application for flats was submitted, and subsequently turned down.

There was definitely a bona fide fire at the hotel near the Golden Hind -- I remember it well, it was the most exciting thing that had happened on Milton Road for a long time. Caused by a chip pan if I remember right.

Remember that one well, but that was when the landlord had a bit of a breakdown. In the weeks before he "redecorated" the pub by splashing paint everywhere. I seem to recall that he was then arrested for standing on the roof threatening passers by with a bow and arrow.

I miss that pub, shame what happened to it.

Spoilers Mill was the classic one, definitely suspicious. That made one of the listed buildings collapse and was then demolished.

I don't think the Tivoli was suspicious, that burnt down way before the planning application.

Yeah, what was that called? He held a knife to my neck around that time he lost it and before the fire.

The Chariots of Fire.

I think the guy's name was Sten.

He pulled a knife on a good friend of mine once, too.

I only went to that pub twice. First time was just before the paint incident, I had a great time grooving to dance music. Second time was a fortnight later, everything was covered in wet paint. Next time I went passed it was charred and burnt. I wish I'd gone there more than I did, though it's probably best I didn't ever meet the nutcase landlord.
