Indeed, I read the report about it yesterday. They have proved that there is a strong business case for it and it will make a profit within a few years. Which is nice.

Excellent. I look forward to not having to schlep across town to get a train. Hopefully there won't be the same bike parking lottery either.

Five WANpoints for use of the word "schlep."

More details:

It is going to be called "Cambridge Science Park" station. The £26 million cost will be repaid by ticket income of the next operators of the Kings Cross line. The County Council will provide the initial costs of building and work is planned to start in early 2014.

The station will have three platforms, and will be served by at least four hourly southbound trains, two of which will terminate at King's Cross, while the third will serve London Liverpool Street and a fourth from Norwich will terminate in Cambridge.

There will be three northbound trains each hour, to Ely, King's Lynn and Norwich, and it is likely trains on the Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport route will also stop there.

The guided busway will be extended into the site from Milton Road, providing a link to St Ives and Huntingdon, while car and cycle parking will also be provided.

The county council is set to approve funding for the project today and a detailed business case will be put before the cabinet on March 6.

I don't suppose it will be accompanied by a new river bridge so that us poor plebs who live in Abbey can get there?

They're building a penny ferry for you lot.

I have the same problem - I actually live in Chesterton and the Chesterton Station site is going to be 3.247 km from my house becuase I'll have to walk all the way up Milton Road and then down Cowley Road. The main station is only 2.917km away. Unless they make a new cut through off Water Street somewhere (or someone makes a hole in the fence).

Also, since the main point of this station is to serve the Science Park, I bet you anything that it will have a reduced service at weekends, when most of us WANers will actually use it. :/

26 million seems pretty cheap for this kind of project.

Published by troll at 10:29am on Tue 21st February 2012.

It would be pretty surprising if they didn't put in a couple of extra footpaths. Surely the weekend service will be all the trains the pass through there anyway? They all stop at Waterbeach, and this would be serving a much greater population.

Published by carney at 10:29am on Tue 21st February 2012.

Indeed Carney. There's no reason not to have it hit this station. I think it'll be really well used. Maybe Kings Hedges Road will be the new Mill Road :)

Published by SB___ at 10:33am on Tue 21st February 2012.

Agreed, troll. I hate to be pessimistic, but I can't see them keeping the cost at 26 million...

Published by DanCJ at 10:47am on Tue 21st February 2012.

I'm not bothered if it does cost more than 26 million, as it's being repaid by train operators.

I wager a lot of the reason the County Council will have agreed to fund it is due to improved access to wards in Tory controlled areas. I strongly suspect, as with the Guided Busway, you'll see little to improve access for city residents.

I'm not too fussed about not being able to use the new station, I'm just located in a funny equidistant place. It isn't far to walk to the main station and I'm not going to get a bus to the new one because I've wasted years waiting for buses and I avoid the horrid things if at all possible.

I do think that this is going to have a strong effect on the city though: House prices will increase around Milton Road and north of the city, especially since there are several 1000 new homes planned in the NIAB site and off Huntingdon Road. Who knows, perhaps people will even WANT to live on Orchard Park one day?

Published by Silent Rob at 2:21pm on Wed 22nd February 2012.

Orchard Park is looking ok these days. Don't think they're having problems selling them to the same extent.

Published by SB___ at 3:01pm on Wed 22nd February 2012.

I was being flippant above - most of the homes are now filled. It still looks like a dump when I visit it, but that's because it's not finished. That said - I think the council learnt a lot of lessons from it - most of the future developments have new clauses to ensure that the infrastructure gets finished and isn't allowed to just stop for years on end.

I just thought that the site was going to be further north on the old housing allocation. The whole site was allocated for housing in the last city local plan but then deallocated because of lack of transport (I think).

I think you're right though, when the station is built then there will be some prime housing on the site before long.

Wonder how much has been done towards building the new station.

Went by the other day, and apart from some trees being cut down, i can't see much change.

Although the proposal has been approved by the government that's only in a funding sense. The planning permission process has yet to go through and there hasn't even been an outline PP submitted let alone granted. My source tells me that work is not due to start until 2014 at the earliest, with a completion date of 2015.

And that's assuming that there aren't contractor delays and all that stuff like with the busway.

Speaking of the busway I cycled to St Ives and back yesterday. Every time I go on the busway I feel like I should have a translusent rotating cat superimposed onto my vision on the top left corner. Seems a bit funny without it. ;)

I went to the preview at the Nuffield Road School last night. It was full of those retired but still mentally active Cambridge intellectual types.
One man was sporting a cravat, whilst an other had his half moon glasses on a chain.
They were all 'experts' in their field, you know
There were some pretty stupid, for the sake of it questions, like: How much will the fare be to London? When will the trains leave? and Will there be enough litter bins?
I took some photos of the models, which I'll post on here when I get home and photoshop them to the right size.

Most planning modals are made by developers. I would imagine that they resue the buildings for other models or throw them in the bin.

The planning models are usually inside a perspex box. Yesterday on site I leaned onto one of the boxes and nearly fell inside it because this one didn't have a top like they usually do. Silly behaviour.

Don't suppose if you noticed if there'll be a bridge over the river to give access to the station from Barnwell / Fen Ditton.

Published by Grape Face at 12:31pm on Tue 9th July 2013.

One of the first things I've got to do in my new job is make a report on the implications on this application into how it affects footpaths. I'll let you know about the bridge when I've done this.

So much for retiring from planning...

Published by Silent Rob at 12:47pm on Tue 9th July 2013.

It would be great if there was a bridge, it would save ages for those who want to get the the science park, as well as the station.
It would also mean you could avoid Green end road, a nightmare to cycle down. Straight down the busway, incl the new bit, over the river and bosh, home.
I'm more into the idea of a bridge rather than the station to be honest.
It would also form the start of the cycle route all the way to the main train station.

Published by Grape Face at 12:59pm on Tue 9th July 2013.

I can't see any mention of a new bridge on Stourbridge Common (though this application creates new station access points on Moss Bank, Bramblefields Nature Reserve and off Nuffield Road and Close. These will all link onto the new Busway extension along the dismantled railway between the existing busway and nearly to the old Stourbridge Junction).

However if you look at the design and acess statement page 14 then there are mentions of possible phase 2's of the busway and future extentions either onto Newmarket Road or over Stourbridge Common. So they are clearly thinking that a bridge might happen at some point in the future.

Published by Silent Rob at 12:24pm on Wed 10th July 2013.

Untitled

That idea of extending the busway to Newmarket Rd makes sense in a kind of SimCity nihilistic kind of way. Personally I hate it, even though it would create a stop near where I live.
The nice field where the horses graze next to the Leper chapel would be swamped under concrete, as would a fair slither of Ditton Meadow.
There was talk of strapping a cycle bridge to the existing railway bridge over the river, that would be better, or even better still a new bridge further down towards Fen Ditton, (shown by black arrow)

This reply has been edited, last edit at 8:19am on Thu 11th July 2013.

Yeah, I don't see that they will ever extend the busway over Ditton Fields all the way to Newmarket Road. There'd be just too much green space destroyed. Stourbridge Common is common land, I don't think Ditton Fields is too - but they'd still be uproar if it was covered over in concrete.

I know there's a railway running straight through it but that's been there since the 1800's and that was put in through open countryside between two villages.

Published by Silent Rob at 12:24pm on Thu 11th July 2013.

There's not a railway in Ditton Fields anymore. It's either scrubland or people's gardens now...

Published by Priority 23 at 7:52am on Wed 27th May 2015.

I don't work in planning so stress that I have no involvement with the station.

As I understand it though the original application was submitted by the County Council because they were leading on major infrastructure projects. However much of the funding was to be provided by the government under the Transport Innovation Fund, which was abolished by the Coalition government as part of their spending cuts.

This means that the funding for the station is now being provided by other sources, largely by Network Rail. Therefore Network Rail must apply for planning permission theirselves. The planning application is almost identical to the last one, but the applicant has changed. But since this is a new application the district council still have to obey the planning process which will add at least 6 months to the process.

There's the Network Rail track work.

A somewhat delayed story in the CEN about the delay on opening.

Published by Priority 23 at 12:46pm on Thu 21st January 2016.

i was walking past it today and talked to the site manager, there was a lot of activity going on and they were putting in the platforms today. they finished all the track work apart from close to the river where they will have to stabilise the bank. he siad that it shoudl be all done by august. so its mainly the station building and car park delaying it. i was already worried that it would be canceled all together.

Noticed last weekend that the base or foundations are in for the station building, as is the lift shaft for the station building and on each of the platforms.

Published by Priority 23 at 8:59am on Fri 19th August 2016.

Went past yesterday on the train from Waterbeach.
The station building is coming along, footbridge and platforms in place.
First part of the Chisholm trail approved as well (but not the new bridge, yet...)
The council approved the bridge in November, it's now out for planning permission.
No date given for the planning decision on the bridge

Has anyone tried typing in the station name CAMBNTH as suggested by Cambridge News. I cant find it.

Published by maaar at 9:25am on Thu 5th January 2017.

Click "Trains" at the top right of the screen and "+" to add a search option. Set the left-hand dropdown to "TIPLOC" (under "Schedule location") and enter CAMBNTH in the box to the right. Click "Search".

Bear in mind that this timetable data is provisional and almost certainly incomplete! I actually considered posting something about it when it started to show up a couple of weeks ago, but decided not to, in case the Cambridge News decided to try and read too much into it...

Edit: Ah, what the heck, since it's out there already. Once again, this is not the final timetable, so don't use it to plan journeys, or indeed for any other purpose.

The timetable is now visible on nationalrail. However, I am disappointed to see that going from cambridge to kings cross until 11:11 I need to change in Cambridge. This doesn't save me any time :-(
Do you know the reason for this? Will this only be temporary and they will introduce direct trains more often?

Published by maaar at 9:29pm on Mon 3rd April 2017.

It looks like there are some direct trains, but they're stoppers, so they probably won't save you any time either:

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W86507/2017/05/25
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W86479/2017/05/25
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W86478/2017/05/25

And probably loads more.

I'd guess National Rail Enquiries are only showing you the fasts, the first one being at 11.11 (and starting from Ely instead):

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W86410/2017/05/25

As for the reason - I don't have a clue! I wouldn't be surprised if they adjust the timetable a bit after they've got some experience with how the station works in practice, but that's only a guess.

Published by Wrongfellow at 10:19pm on Mon 3rd April 2017.

Thanks Wrongfellow, going back in the evening from kings cross to cambridge north there is one fast direct train per hour, strange that it is not the same in the morning. I hope they will adjust it after a while.

I came through it this morning. The departure boards are all lit up (saying "the next train does not stop here", as if we needed to be told). There are still workmen crawling all over it; something gives me the feeling they're still going to be fitting taps and doorknobs well into next week.

It smells very distinctive! I knew about "new car smell" but not "new station smell".

You can get out at the Fen Road end, too. Walking time to the Haymakers is about 15-20 minutes.

There are loads of signs for pedestrians and cyclists. I'll post some pictures later.

Interesting to see what appear to be solar panels in the roof of the bike park. I wonder if they'll publish any figures for how much power they produce.

Brilliant, thanks chaps, although I'm still not entirely clear as to what road it's on off Milton Road. Cowley?

I didn't make it up there. Didn't see much point with you eager beavers :)

I'm not sure either, but if you drive down from the A14 past the science park then there are clear signs and a new lane directing you to the station. I think it is Cowley Road though.

Wow. Went up there yesterday and was very impressed, much to the amusement of Mrs B-Bam who ripped the piss out of me for being such nerd and getting excited about a station. It was as much of a surprise to myself.

i've been to the station twice by bike now, and generally approve, but yesterday we decided to drive and park there to save lugging the baby's stuff all the way there. First of all there was only a small temporary sign telling me which direction to drive in on Milton Road (which I missed) so I had to go all the way round Milton Road roundabout and then back down. Then I reached the car park to find that it was impossible to pay for parking without a phone! No ticket machines, it's online only. I don't always have my phone with me because I like the break of not being online for days out. I thought "bollocks to this" and drove all the way to where I was going without getting the train at all.

Cambridge North: sustainably fail. I'm sure that there are lots of old people who still don't have phones. This seems a stupid idea to me.

Capture

Noticed on Saturday that there's a cycle track parallel to Cowley Road, as well as the new bit of the busway.
Must say though, when the fantastic track for bikes merges with Moss Bank, not only do the signs stop, but there's traffic and parked cars. It's a bit dangerous.

I am planning a trip to Ely using the new station and would like to take my bike on the train. Can one do such a thing?!

Usually. Most of the time you'll be fine. Some of them are "folding bikes only" in the morning rush hour, and I once got turned away with a bike at Cambridge because a previous train had been cancelled and the one I wanted to catch was ridiculously full.

Cheers. I am eyeing up the 19:26 so hopefully won't be busy.

I was chatting to the staff at the station last November and they said that there might be better connections from Cambridge North to Kings Cross in the mornings starting from May 2018. Can anyone tell me where I can find the proposed timeteable changes. thanks a lot!

From next May new trains will link the city to the Thameslink scheme, which is currently running between north and south London.

http://www.opentraintimes.com/ will let you search the train timetable as far into the future as you like.

May is far enough away that it's all still subject to change, though. I believe they try to plan the timetable 12 weeks in advance; any information about dates more than 12 weeks into the future, from any source, is only advisory.
