Watch out for water taxis trying to mow you down ;-]

I wouldn't wish attempting to do Cambridge-Ely by bike on my own worst enemy/taxi driver. Too many stiles, no paths and it's bloody miles.

Andy T should design a bike-powered paddle steamer. That would be much more fun.

I like a good long mystery bike ride every once in a while, especially if it takes you through fields and dead ends. Its like an adventure.

going down the river is a world of pain, dont bother.

i planned this route last week and we did this on sunday just gone. 41 miles, left at 10.30am and got back at 5.30pm with a big lunch stop and a look round the cathedral. really easy to get there, no time at all. way back is a bit longer and slightly demoralising if you have a strong head wind like we did. still great though.

Cool, I was thinking of doing exactly that one of these weekends!

Looking carefully on Google Maps, it seems that there is a continuous path until Waterbeach, as you said. But there is a kind of path that resumes after a while on the other side of the river, and then you have to switch again a couple of times.

At least, that's what the photos say. I'd say it's better planning it beforehand.

There's meant to to be a national cycle route to do this on, but it breaks annoyingly in the middle. I would have suggested a route similar to HDs, though I'd maybe wimp out and train it back.

The path along river up to Waterbeach is one of my favourite Cambridge things. I have often cycled up there, but yesterday I jogged there and back - 17km. The path seems to stop at Waterbeach though.

Cycling along A10 to Ely isn't as bad as some say. There's usually a couple of feet space cyclists can use to the left of the car lane. I did another mad dose of exercise recently by cycling up to Hunstanton which is mostly A10 and didn't get knocked off!

How long did that take?

Wouldn't want to cycle today with the blustering wind. I fancy a bike up to Ely sometime... spot of fish n chips, cheaky 4 halves of ale....

One of the things I'm most looking forward to on our forthcoming seaside weekend in Cromer is fish and chips. They always taste perfect at the seaside, especially when you've built up a real "bracing sea air" type hunger. Omnom.

I've done the route by the river to Ely on a (mountain) bike and can confirm it's a nightmare. You can do it but there's no real path to speak of and plenty of fences and gates you have to throw your bike over.

I've walked from Cambridge to Ely along the river for the last six years to raise money for Macmillan, it's quite hard going after waterbeach, but i quite enjoy it. (its 19 miles in total)

Seems WAN just saved me from a world of hurt.
Having recently re-discovered both my bike and the river, I'd been contemplating taking the route from Clayhithe to Ely myself, purely based upon how nice the ride from Cambridge to Clayhithe was.

It took me and KirstyM a week to get over the trauma of going from Cambridge to Ely by the river. Seriously hellish. Ached soooo much.

There are two chip shops in Cromer, both on the same road (round the corner from the bookshop). The best chips are the one furthest from the sea, though I've not eaten from there for a few years.

Noted, Rob thanks. You are truly the East Anglian Seaside Resort guru. I may have further questions before our holiday weekend...

There's a cinema there too, for when it rains. I saw The Phantom Menace there when it first came out. It was a totally underwhelming experience.

I just know a lot about chips, not nec about cromer... Make sure you see the bookshop though.

I saw the phantom menace at the cinema twice. I saw it on pirate before it came out and then saw it at the cinema in case it was any better on the big screen, but I was woefully wrong. Then I had to sit through the wretched thing again the next week because a mate wanted to see it. To this day it's the Star Wars film I've seen least. When they rereleased A New Hope special edition at the cinema in 97 I went to see it every day for 2 weeks and saw it 18 times in total. Good times.

When in the last couple of years did every fucker and his fucking dog start saying 'good times' at every available opportunity? Bad times indeed.

I blame the internet.

What would you prefer?

"Great days"?

"A golden age"? ;-) :-)

I've done that cycle route fairly close after moving to Cambridge. All went well (apart from being chased by a herd of cows, and loads of stiles!). However, I never know that the Cam flows onto the Great Ouse at Pope's Corner just before heading into Ely. This confused the hell out of me, and i ended up following this small ditch the wrong way, until I hit the A10. Doh!
