York Street Air Raid Shelter

I'd read there had been one in the part of St Matthew's Piece by Abbey Walk, where there used to be houses, but I didn't know there was a surviving one.

That photo is dated 2007 which is AFTER the new houses behind the Doctors were built. I can't work out where it is, and it is annoying me. :(

My father-in-law might know. He used to live on York Street as a youngster - he's 91 now. Although, thinking about it, he was, like *in* the war, so he wouldn't have been on York Street by then, so may not know.
Will ask him when I see him next.

The houses behind aren't St Matthews Gardens I don't think - the brick looks too red, in fact I'd say red like ours in Silverwood Close but York St isn't that close to us. I think it might be the side of York St that backs onto Sturton Street.
We did have them in Silverwood Close. Number 33 used to when we moved here but that lady has since died and it's rented out so the new owners might have got rid of it. We had one in ours but it was completely collapsed so it had to go unfortunately it was too dangerous.
I was reading a piece in Time Out 1000 things to do in London about a guy who takes pictures inside derelict buildings in the city, and I'd love to do that in Cambridge, especially 13 Chesterton Road. I'd love to buy it actually and rescue it.

I've seen the Edward Street one as it's in the garden of a house that we looked at a couple of years ago.

The York St shelter is in the back garden of the woman who runs metisarts, so I'm sure if you got in contact using the address on the page she might let you have a look. Her name is Zoe and she's very nice.
