Chaos! Misery! Anguish, sorrow and woe!

All these things and more will be faced by rail users if this plan goes ahead.

http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Home/On-track-plans-to-triple-the-size...

Interestingly, they're promising us "more space for buses, bikes, taxis and cars", but the artist's impression shows a posh pedestrianised plaza where the bike racks used to be. Maybe they're going to build some kind of massive multi-storey underground bus, bike, taxi and car park?

It'll be interesting to see the plans when they're submitted.

Who the fuck can afford train travel anyway?

Published by Kuryakin at 1:19am on Mon 30th April 2012.

The commuter train to King's Cross is crazily expensive...but I have no choice other to pay out. However, the family rail card gives amazing discounts for off-peak travel. Cheap cheap cheap!

My dad was the manager there when BR did the last big renovation which replaced the Lord Bryon bar with retail space and uncovered the ceiling. It's listed - I think the front facade only so I am interested in what they do with it. The offices look almost the same layout as they did when I used to hang around the back waiting for my dad to finish work. What is now the hotel opposite had huge steel window shutters and was furnished so that it could replicate the main station and keep the station running in the event of bomb during WW2.

Published by dangerouscurve at 10:00am on Mon 30th April 2012.

The CB1 development proposes that plaza in the pic in front of the station as part of the redevelopment. All of station road is going to be turned into blocks like they are building behind the Mill over the next few years - including the car park to the north. The cycle shop, the hotel, Aid and Abet and all the 1970's office blocks to the South of Station Road are going to be knocked down and replaced. The only part of station road that will be left are the language schools to the north of the road.

There are plans for masses of cycle parking spaces (4 times the number we have now) and taxi ranks around the new buildings. Not sure about car parking though, but it's not something I really care about. ;)
I shall try and find a plan. I have a printout, I just can't find it online because the planning application has 444 documents to go through.

Published by Silent Rob at 10:33am on Mon 30th April 2012.

And the station building is indeed grade 2 listed. The CB1 masterplan does not propose changing the station. But they could extend the ticket hall if they extend it sideways into the newer extensions.

So the plans are available? The news article said they were "expected to be submitted shortly".

I'm not surprised it's a weighty tome. Any links to the most interesting bits (ie actual plans/maps/etc rather than just waffle) greatly appreciated :)

Published by Wrongfellow at 10:49am on Mon 30th April 2012.

The plans for station road are under C/0266/08 and then each of the new blocks are being submitted under new reserved matters permissions. If you can't sleep then you can see the plans here:
http://idox.cambridge.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do...

I'll see if I can find just the masterplan sometime. Annoyingly I've already read through the entire bloody thing once and printed out anything important I'll need in future so I didn't have to do it again. But I'll keep my eyes open.

The plans for the station are not yet submitted like it says in the article. I'll post those up when they arrive.

There's a simple block plan on thye developers website though:

Click on "site" and it will show you the outline of the new buildings. They are just finishing off the student housing to the south.

Published by Silent Rob at 11:02am on Mon 30th April 2012.

Are they knocking down the Victorian villas just beyond the office block that replaced the Railway hotel? They're rather nice buildings.

Published by dangerouscurve at 11:38am on Mon 30th April 2012.

No, those are staying.

Anything coloured is new. Anything that exists now where the new buildings are are going to be knocked down - except the station itself and the foster mill.

Apparently 180 new cycle spaces at the station are to be opened today.

There is (again apparently) going to be an application for a 3000 space multistorey cycle park later in the year.

Published by Silent Rob at 8:27am on Wed 2nd May 2012.

They did open today. It was funny, looking at bemused commuters trying to work out how to use the top rung (it's a set of two tier metal racks).

Published by Boudicea Bambaataa at 11:39pm on Mon 14th May 2012.

I've been in to Woodlands surgery a couple of hundred times over the past few years and they have the most pleasant reception experience of all the surgeries in Cambridge. Mill Road surgery are very nice as well, but they are prone to queues.

Published by Rocket Dog at 1:02am on Tue 15th May 2012.

Yes, you can't beat a bit of woodland surgery. Amputations with a beaver, trepaning with a woodpecker. Using a pair of conkers to give a squirrel breast implants.

Published by ed____ at 7:13am on Tue 15th May 2012.

I've only been to York Street Medical Practice. It has lots of room and not much queuing but it is always way too hot. I want a surgery waiting room that has a sensible room temperature. The last thing you want when feeling a bit feverish, or going in with something joint related like RSI, is to sit in a sweltering sauna.

Well I count it as a big thumbs up that although the number of people visiting our website isn’t huge, we have at least caught the attention of an Iranian extortion racket. The main reason behind the company seems to be to sell its security consultation, web hosting and network consulting services in a digital update to the Mafia demanding “protection” money: We’ll hack your site and then show you how to protect yourself against hackers like us.

Ashiyane Digital Security Team's "improvements" to the site

There have been allegations that there is a religious dimension to the attacks. In the aftermath of the Danish Cartoon Fiasco, website SecurityProNews wrote “Muslum hackers continue their retaliatory assault on Danish websites” where they apparently left a message saying in different languages: “We are Muslims and We Cannot Let Anyone to Insult to Islam.” Maybe it’s religious fanatics with a poor grasp of English grammar, maybe it’s just young geeks without girlfriends trying to get a reaction from the rest of the world - who knows. The message left on this website was much less religious and more touchingly patriotic, simply saying “We Love Iran”.

I love Iran too. It has a long and illustrious history, and has contributed a lot to the world – not least Persian (flying) carpets, Zoroastrianism and the hanging gardens of Babylon, but I’d prefer it if they tried *not* to hack our website. Still, I’ll take it as a compliment that they even found us, and leave it at that.

The fix (if anyone’s reached this page looking for answers): replace your index page, as that’s the one they’ve “improved”, and restrict the permissions on your server to the minimum required.
