This place called DITTON FIELDS

come on peeps as you can see Chesterton is now not a place i'm thinking of moving now after all the feedback i was given. Still hoping to move CB sides though. Please give me your views on Ditton Fields, more so behind Macky D's if thats called ditton fields. Any way i'm wafflin now. Heard from my partners mum(from Cherry Hinton sides) that its a shit hole and this primary school Abbey Meadows is just the same! Wouldn't she just say that when her young sons go to private school anyway. C'mon give me some feedback please don't wanna be moving into a big mistake. For my daughters sake anyway.

I live nearby to Ditton Fields... it's alright, you'll fit in well if you have one of those scooters that whizz up and down my f*cking road day and night.

We used to sell ice-cream there and it was a real dive. However, it was good for business as they would que at the van. But a very rough area indeed. Would not recommend it to anyone.

Hi be really interested to hear if you made the move to Ditton Fields or not? I've just been to see a house there and I'm sharing your concerns - particularly with the school! Maybe you can let me know how bad that hood actually is? regards, Heidi

When I knew someone living there (couple of years ago) she refered to it as the killing fields.
I think it depends on which stretch of road within 'The Fields' that you're on. She was in a sort of cul-de-sac near the passage to McDonalds and her area was a shithole. Struturally, the flats were sound and fairly nice, but the neighbours were something else.
Everthing from noise nuisance and low level vandalism to violently anti-social behaviour were fairly common place.
Of course, it may be different now, perhaps the council turfed out the 'problem children', I don't know. What I do know is that the day she moved out was one of the happiest of her life.

I can remember Camcauseway before all the area was tarted up (when the "streamroller rec" still had a steamroller) and back then it struck me as a proper dive. My problem was that I had friends living in the Fen estate and back then there was no Pippin Drive, just open fields (christ, I feel old) and the most direct route meant running the gauntlet that was Camcauseway by night! :-)

Published by Mr-Grey at 7:37pm on Thu 14th June 2007.

Oh dear! Jedimia I too have heard of this "dirty ditton" business I am presuming that you did not take up the offer of the 3 bed house??
I was thinking maybe never let my child play in the street again and fill my house with students till I can afford to escape my council house for good? Perhaps this would explain why I have 2 people from Ditton fields wanting to come and see my quiet village house, and one of them wants to swap a 3 for a 2!!
Mr Grey I am not familiar with the camcauseway of which you speak I must explore further.. and when did they do this tarting up? I presume that was some time ago?

Published by heidigold at 8:34pm on Thu 14th June 2007.

its a dive , we used to nickname it "Beverly hills" lol
Avoid this place , mopeds going up and down the road all the time as well

In the scheme of things probably not that long ago, since turning 30 my perception of time has become strangely skewed. My reference to Camcauseway was made only in response to Jedimias reference to place that played such a part of my upbringing (with subtle in joke), not as a serious suggestion to you.

Anyhoo, back to your predicament. They want to swap their 3 bed for your 2 bed? In that case, I'd be wary. Like I say, some parts of it may be very nice but my ex's experience of Ditton Fields was truly dreadful. She couldn't believe her luck when someone wanted to swap with her, although his family was originally from The Fields, so for him it was almost a homecoming.

Oh... back to the drawing board methinks..... thanks for the advice!

I lived in Ditton Fields for 3 and a half years. In that time, we had bomb desposal, numerous police incidents (all be it mostly minor) and the special police from Essex (deals with chemical weapons and the like). That said, it wasn't that bad were i was, but i can imagine some neighbours would make your life hell! Mostley its just full off gobby kids who have discovered the word "wanker"!

It's a cursed location - many years ago I went there (actually visited madachood's abode) - not six years later, I dropped a mug on my kitchen floor. It was irreparably damaged and I knew then that the curse of Ditton Fields was something I would have to live with.

People told me not to go there - I was headstrong and wouldn't listen. I paid the price (75p for a new mug).

I worked in Abbey for five years, dealing with the 'young people of the area'. What a thankless and very unpleasant task. Little bastards. How I laugh to myself when I, on a regular basis, see their little faces staring out from the front page of the CEN. Although it just shows I failed I s'pose.

shudder.

I have been living on Ditton Fields for over 15yrs now and bought our property approx. 10yrs earlier. Our plan to begin with, was to stay a maximum of 5 yrs and then move out as the kids got older. The only reason was because the area had a reputation solely down to various troublemakers living there - and abusing their benefits paid for by us, taxpayers. However, Ditton Fields has had a huge influx of private purchases over the past 5yrs, with council tenants either buying their homes through the 'right to buy' system and/or new families taking advantage of the (then) low prices on offer in the area. The council have also done a great job of removing troublesome neighbours and try and stay on top of the area. It's a fantastic location with access to the City, Science park, river, shops, superstores etc. Buses run next to us (Wadloes Road and Newmarket Road) every 15min too. As for schools, we have Fen Ditton Primary school which is brilliant. Secondary schools - our children have just finished at Impington Village College, which is outside of our catchment area but is a fantastic one. I love Cambridge and I have really grown to love Ditton Fields!

"........The council have also done a great job of removing troublesome neighbours......." I wonder where these poor people were "removed" to?

Published by Priority 23 at 7:33pm on Thu 6th October 2016.

Is this a troll piece? Who creates an account on an almost defunct local forum with 7.5 people just to publish a propaganda piece on the joys of Ditton Fields.... and how accessible it is.... and how often the buses run.... but rely heavily on their car when it comes to the City Deal. Is there an anti-City Deal group searching the interwebs for any pro-City Deal discussion?

Published by foolscap (not active) at 12:46pm on Fri 7th October 2016.

@foolscap - No, it's not a troll piece. Everything I have written, is accurate. I created the account because I happen to come across this page when searching for some history on Ditton Fields and felt that the negative comments on this forum were, although true at the time, very much outdated. Ditton Fields may not be the best place in Cambridge, but it's better today than it ever has been - and it's getting better and better. To reiterate - I wasn't searching for any pro or anti city-deals etc. as you speculate - I'm telling you how it is. Get rid of the ugly caravans and some of the remaining benefit scroungers - and Ditton Fields could (potentially) be a very desirable place to live in.

Yes, Get rid... get rid...

If I read the remainder of your comment out loud, you sound just like the type of benefit scrounging potty mounthed vermin that I'm talking about. You must be incredibly tough behind that keyboard of yours, sitting in your caravan stealing some poor sods wifi!

To reiterate, I live in Ditton fields and my comments are both fair and accurate. Even the caravan comment that you took an extraordinary amount of offence to, is MY opinion AND shared by many other residents on Ditton fields. Before you throw a hissy fit at your keyboard again, take a drive down and you will see what I mean. There are caravan/s mobile homes at every other house which, irrespective of your views, makes the place look trashy. Now, as for your latter comment - We were one of those who started out on benefits ourselves, but bought our property right away (after being transferred here) because we were in a position to do so. My point is that I'm not slating people who live off benefits. I'm slating those who rinse the council/govt for EVERY SINGLE THING, without giving anything back. There are many 'underclass' who take full advantage of our Government that I see day in, day out who clearly have no desire to ever work. There are also a small handful of people claiming disability but are fully able bodied to do just about everything - but choose to take every benefit there is going. I appreciate that you have these kind of people that ALL us taxpayers should be angry with, but I am specifically referring to our Ditton Fields. This is a great place to live, great location and has great potential in becoming a truly sought after estate. Whether that makes me any of things you mentioned, so be it.
