Explore Cambridge summer 2009(?)

Cambridge Station 2009(?)

Think this has come up before but there's been a lot of development since then.
I've been researching Spiller's Mill for an event there on Friday.

Bing Maps Bird's Eye view still shows the city before 2010. The Mill hasn't yet been burnt down, it's summer, rail replacement bus day, CRC Brunswick site is still there and the Varsity Hotel and houses on Harvest Way are under construction.
Anyone want to date it more accurately?

I remember that we were offered this set of aerial photography at work (in the days when local councils could actually afford to do and buy things). We turned it down because we couldn't justify the cost, which was fortunate because a year later Bing made it available for free. It reminded me of all the people I went to university with who specialised in aerial photography and remote sensing, only to find their skills were later made completely redundant by google maps.

Anyway, I'll dig through old emails and see if I can find an accurate date.

I still like that set rotatable photos, it is a shame that they haven't updated it.

In a similar vein, I wonder what Google are doing with superceeded versions of Google street view? In years to come that is going to be an AMAZING historical resource. I do hope that they make it available as archives.

Right, I don't have the emails which will give me an accurate date.

HOWEVER!

1. The new flats down Fitzwilliam Road (now called Glenalmond Avenue) are only just started. My records show that I surveyed these in April 2009 and they were not yet started. This means that the Bing maps are later than April 2009. One block is nearing completion in the Bing Maps so I would guess that the Bing maps are several months later than April.

2. My house is nearly completed. The deeds to my property say that it was completed in Aug 2009, I moved in Oct 2009. This means that the Bing maps are earlier than August 2009, assuming all of Cambridge was flown at the same time.

3. The clock on the Catholic Church on Hills Road says it is 10 to 11. This means that I can say with certainty that the Bing photos were flown in the morning! https://binged.it/2aggZLh

So based on the above I would guess the Bing Maps are 10.50am, mid to late July.

Think you've already seen my 2011 film......

There are a lot of visible vehicle tracks on Midsummer Common, and a brownish scuffed bit near where the East Stage used to be, so I'm guessing that bit was photographed after Strawberry Fair, rather than before.

There's also some visible marking on Jesus Green where the beer festival is held - but it looks like two photos have been stitched together here, and they may not have been taken at the same time. (Edit: they definitely weren't taken at the same time; the angle of the shadows cast by the sun is completely different.)

It's market day in the Market Square. That might help narrow down the day of the week.

I tried googling to see if there were any details of rail disruptions in summer 2009, but didn't find anything.

If the photos were taken at different times then we really are screwed in narrowing down a date!

There are some marks on the grass at Cherry Hinton Hall, suggesting that this was after the Folk Festival, i.e. in August. The link below shows where the beer tent was.

Nice work all. I particularly liked the Catholic Church clock spot!

The long stay car park is filled with random (non-Stagecoach/Whippet) double deckers and no cars, but
there is a First Capital Connect and I think whatever company was running the Liverpool St (West Anglia) Line, so it's more difficult to guess what the engineering works were -- maybe on the Stansted-Birmingham or the line to Ipswich/Norwich.

The 2011 film is increasingly weird to see now too.

The Greyhound looked like a good spot for a Waco, Texas style shoot out

In about 2007 I decided to have a drink in every pub in Cambridge (over a year or so). I made a list and set out. I did about 70% of them but then had a nasty experience in the Snowcat where someone started on me before I even made it to the bar, so I decided to abandon my quest. This meant that I never went in the Greyhound. It looked like a right shithole from the outside though.

Since a lot of pubs have closed down since the smoking ban and recession I suspect that a lot of the ones I didn't make it to have since shut down.

DukefofArgyle2009

Some friends of mine started going to all the pubs in Cambridge. But they started in Mill Road and on the second day went to the Duke of Argyle, which basically ended the project.

Looks like it was boarded up awaiting demolition in 2009.

i've played pool in the Snowcat. think it was one of several pubs that wasn't easy to go into if you weren't local or part of a group, and local. Greyhound had the odd disco, maybe bands (in the same way The Grapes does, though the latter at least has good beer)

~The Duke of Argyle has become a much more welcoming place since it was knocked down and replaced with houses.

I went into the Greyhound once, because I needed to buy some fag papers. Not only were packets of fag papers 10p each (half what they cost anywhere else at the time), it actually turned out to be friendly pub and I stayed for a pint.

Ah, the Duke of Argyle - reminds me of my favourite wan thread ever: http://www.wereallneighbours.co.uk/idlechat/message.php?sv=text&id=243.... Great summary by marcosthebubble.

Yes that "big fight" thread is indeed brilliant.
