Bowie continues to dominate the news. I don't know, occasionally you get a major celebrity death, like Thatcher or Jacko, which dominates the news for days on end. In this case it seems different, somehow almost everyone seemed to like and respect him. I don't think this has happened since John Peel. Shame.

I think that the number of entertainers in their sixties and seventies who die of cancer these days is linked to the fact that during the 50s, 60's and 70s heavy smoking and everyday drinking were commonplace. The stereotype that most of the business at the BBC was done in the bar was largely true.

Nowadays smoking is sharply declining so I think that cancer rates will decrease too.

His story fell flat on two counts: 1, he was about 45, 2, the picture of the Titanic he showed you when telling you he'd been onboard was of a small single-masted yacht. I gave him a quid for a good story.

Published by John Techno at 12:44am on Wed 8th June 2016.

Haha! I remember there used to be two pissed blokes hanging around east road Roundabout. One of them was the legendary "white lightning guy". On my way to work the white lighting guy would be sitting quietly nursing a 3 litre bottle of white lightning. On my way home from work he would be animated, waving his now empty bottle, yelling "you fucking bastards! I am the Virgin Mary! I will shoot you with my CANNON!", or similar.

White lightning guy now hangs out on the bench next to the war memorial on Newmarket road by Tesco next to what used to be the seven stars. He seems to have stopped the shouting.

Ginger baker's "son" wasn't the same as the east road two I'm afraid.

Lucien Blyau, who won the Tour of Belgium in 1947 and looked all set to be one of history's great cyclists until a broken knee ended his career two years later. Lucien was regular at the Tour de France for the last 40 or so years, where he'd usually be found 20km from the finish line of each stage giving drinks (purchased by himself) to riders - they won't usually take drinks from spectators in case something's been added to make them fail anti-doping tests, but Lucien was trusted.

Julien Moineau

Occasionally - it's not unknown at the Tour and was common once upon a time. Two specific riders come to mind: Tom Simpson, who had been drinking brandy (and swallowing amphetamines) when he collapsed and died on Mont Ventoux in the 1967 Tour and Jacques Anquetil (the first man to win the Tour five times) who treated the indigestion that threatened to ruin his chances as he raced to the top of the Puy de Dôme by downing half a bottle of champagne.

A third example is one of my favourite Tour stories and dates from the 224km Stage 17 in 1934 - it was a hellishly hot day and came right after two mountain stages of 325km and 194km, so none of the riders were really in the mood for racing and when they reached a village where the locals had set up trestle tables laden with plenty of ice cold beer, they were more than happy to stop and take advantage of the hospitality. What they didn't realise until too late was that the "villagers" were actually friends of a rider named Julien "The Sparrow" Moineau who hadn't stopped, had set the whole trick up at his own expense and was by that time too far away up the road for anyone to stop him winning the stage.

It was dirty tactic, but everyone appreciates a free beer and Moineau probably remains the most popular cheat in the history of sport to this day.
