New building

Greetings WAN, been a while. Few of the old faithful still keeping the dream alive I see......

I'm sure this is still the place to come for local knowledge so.....anyone know what the new building is on the Sainsburys roundabout on Coldhams Lane?

Greetings Vindaloon! As far as I know, it's all still owned by the church that was there opposite Sainsburys - so the new building is an upgrade I guess. Doesn't look very church like though.

Correct, the new building is a new evangelical church and community space.

I have seen some complaints in social networks by vocal atheists complaining that the new building is too big and is therefore forcing religion into people faces or something. Personally I disagree with them.

It's a big 'un, alright. On the other hand, Ely Cathedral is pretty big, too - and not many people are opposed to that being there.

The Atheists are moaning about nothing. Sainsburys is pretty big, are people who don't believe to frozen peas complaining about that?
I like the new building, loads better the the brick nothingness that was there before.
It could be an office building, it doesn't look religious at all.
When are we getting the promised Mosque on Mill Road...... ? Bring it on!

What really annoys me is when atheists start preaching and trying to force their religious beliefs on others. It would almost be funny if it wasn't so hypocritical.

I too am eager for the Mill Road Mosque to be built - Mill Road has many charms, but it doesn't have much in the way of attractive architecture. Also, it'd be the end of that eyesore of a mural!

Are you sure they are not complaining because it dwarfs some of the neighbouring houses? I haven't cycled past there in a while but the building works last time I did suggested a building higher than the many residential properties on either side. No more nude sunbathing in the garden

No, the ones I saw were definitely complaining for religious reasons. It was a very small minority though.

I wonder if there was much opposition to it at the time?

Ely Cathedral was built by the Normans shortly after they invaded. Like most Norman Cathedrals and castles it was deliberately designed to be as imposing as possible, with sheer walls that tower over the plebs, set on sites that can be seen from great distances. This was so that the people could see that they are well and truly conquered.

So I bet there was opposition to Ely cathedral but people were stuck with it because they'd get hacked to death if they complained about it. :)

I seem to recall there was that one time when the Saxon Defence League came down and daubed badly-spelled anti-Norman graffiti all over the fence, though.

People called Normans, they go the house?

I don't think it's a "normal" church thats being built, they call themselves a Community Church -whatever the fuck that is.
Their web page is not very informative in that they don't mention what their beliefs are....
Very weird, their just waiting to get their claws dug into you.

It's an evangelical church that is outside the C of E, if that's what you mean, but that's hardly unusual these days.

Apparently the new building includes a large concert venue and rehearsal rooms, as well as a church and Lord knows what else.

As long as we remember 'religion is all in your head' we'll be alright.
