Still not able to upload images larger than 300x300 BTW.

That photo is from the last episode of Star Trek TNG. If you watch the episode I'm fairly sure that it's moving and a flying car (or similar) goes by.

Well spotted SR :-)

Created in 1994 this shows Cambridge (St John's chapel tower) in 2395 when Data is Lucasian professor (a post held by Newton, Babbage and Hawking).

I remember I used to think it was the writers being ignorant and assuming too much about permission for unsympathetic development in Cambridge, but was reminded of this by the Wilton Terrace and New Museums news stories.

You're right about the animated hovercar SR. All the details:

This photo was set in the 24th century. When you consider the difference between Cambridge of, say, 50 years ago and now, it's not unreasonable to assume the changes will continue and it will be unrecognisable when Piccard and chums are around.

Also, that picture is from the grounds of St John's College looking towards Bridge Street. If you look the university buildings in the foreground haven't changed, the futuristic buildings are all behind them. I always assumed that sometime between now and the 24th century they demolish park street car park and the surrounding buildings and build the sci if buildings there. With that in mind the development is fairly sympathetic, considering.

True and certainly no-one who first saw Cambridge in the 21st century / 2010s onwards will ever be surprised at this (especially if they'd arrived by train). The oval cross-section building in the middle reminds me of the recent towers at Parkside Place and Botanics House.

Cambridge in the 90s was really still very low-rise though.

Maybe in this alternate future the 1950s planned dual carriageways were built through the Bridge St area and this the nth redevelopment after that. (Park St car park is the only part of that scheme which was built which is why it isn't well connected to the road system.)

I didn't know that about Park Street car park. It did always seem strange to me that it was not really connected to anything.

I've got a copy of the 1949 Cambridge plan, which proposes all sorts of things that were never built ( and a lot that was). I'll dig that out today and see if the car park is there.

I see that they are starting on Park Street Car Park 300 years early. I hope they building the pyramidy building first.

The round observation tower in the picture would be an asset to the city.
Most cities in ex communist countries have observation towers, the Germans love them too.
I'd vote for one of them.

Here's a film of the Munich Observation Tower....

The highest the public can get in Cambridge at the moment is St Marys Tower. Or possibly the top floor of the Grand Arcade car park.

Isn't the nurses accommodation block at the hospital the highest building?....

According to wikipedia, the University Library is the tallest (49m).

Maybe the Varsity Hotel in Thompson's Lane is part of the 24th century development too -- definitely visible over the surrounding buildings (if not to this scale ...).

This is the nurses building, is it really shorter than the library....?

The UL and St Johns College Chapel are all higher. However they are not open to plebs so the highest public spaces are the ones I mention above. I'd love to go to the top of the UL and St Johns but I've never been able to.

Where does the Museum of Techno come in with it's chimney?
The Catholic Church is pretty high too...?

I think the RC church is the tallest, but you can't climb to the top, sadly. Same goes for the chimney at Addenbrookes.
