Random fact for you: the first cycling Hour Record attempt was by Frank Dodds, an American rider, at the Cambridge University sports ground.

WiggoTruck

The back of Team Wiggo's truck, which I had a look at when I was at a race in Croydon last week. Quite a few quid's-worth in there!

Is that how many wheels he gets through in an hour? He must need a lot of pit stops.

1876? I wonder where the Cambridge University sports ground was back then?

I cycled along Gresham Road on Saturday coming back from the post office and was shocked to see a big space where Fenners Gym used to be. Not a fan of the new Sports Centre, membership is now too expensive, they pay staff next to nothing, and remember some good times at the old place in the late 80s, that's 1980s. I'm not quite that old :p

cycle

In 1876 all the universities had large personal cricket grounds to the west of Cambridge (now to the west of Grange Road). Among all these the university had a very circular cycle track, which I have attached a picture of. The track is just about where Clarkson Road and Wilberforce Road are now.

This map is from 1885.

Trinity College Cricket Ground on the above map is almost the same as Trinity Old Field on Google maps:

I don't know for sure if Frank Dodds did use that cycle track, but it seems likely to me.

The track was gone by 1900. And now we still don't have a velodrome. Or a monorail.

We may soon have a velodrome, of sorts - Trumpington Sports Village, if it gets built, will include an outdoor oval track. I don't think it'll have banking like a proper velodrome, though. One day, when I'm Dictator for Life, I'm going to use car tax to fund a scheme in which all school football fields will have velodromes built on them.
