WAN Handover

Hey all - it's time for me to hand WAN over.

The domain name wereallneighbours.co.uk comes up for renewal on the 1st of May, and I will not be renewing it. If you want WAN to continue, you'll need to find a new owner before then, as after then, the site will not guaranteed to work.

You'll need to find a new owner for the domain, and a new provider for PHP/MySQL hosting. I'm happy to assist in moving both domain and hosting, and I'll be happy to help maintaining the existing code should the new owners not be techy types....

I think any WAN users who want to be on Facebook are probably on Facebook already. Anyone can set one up, so why don't you make one and let people decide for themselves if they want to use it?

Personally I find WAN to be refreshingly free of adverts, invitations to play Farmville, and links to outright woo and paranoia from sites like collective-evolution.com. Long may it stay!

As before, I'm happy to offer it a home, subject to reviewing the code and finding that it's not full of security flaws (and at least one flaw has been found in it since that thread).

(Brad, I have the password for the Plesk admin page, but haven't poked about in there much and can't be bothered to explore it in detail - is it possible to see the source via that page?)

A WAN FB page is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. One of the reasons why I still post on here is because it's a nice little relic of the pre FB / Twitter age. People still bother to write full posts, rather than the little snippets of iPhone trivia you get on social networks. Plus there's a sense of permanence here. You can search through old threads going back years, which you can't do on social networks. FB is like a magazine, once it goes off the front page then it is effectively gone forever. Plus, I know two WANers in real life, neither of them are on FB so don't assume that everyone uses it.

So that's what's wrong with your idea. No offence CHG.

I don't think I'd use it if it was on facebook - I'm on FB but don't often comment on stuff there; and if people do want to chat about stuff on there then there are already other groups (or you could set one up). As for wan, I like the fact that it's separate to all the other social media and is mostly related to Cambridge. Wan is unique and I'd like it to stay that way.

Erm I think that fact that someone has volunteered to take over is sort of covering the original post in this thread really. I have no problem with nicknames as there are some unpleasant people out there that may be a reason for people to stick with that over a real name. On FB I have some control over who can read my posts, not so on an open forum like this.

Nowt wrong with your idea and nothing to stop you setting up a FB page if you want one Cherryhintonguy in fact there may already be one, a quick search brings up an awful lot of Cambridge based pages that may cover what you want.

I know it's not really what it was but I still like to lurk and post occasionally - please save WAN!!

I agree with cmouse, there is nothing to stop CHG from setting up their own FB page and if they do then I wish them luck with it. It just doesn't appeal to me personally.

Well, although I don't participate as much as I did in the golden age of WAN (circa 2006-2010) it would be very sad to see it go. Hope somebody can take over as the WAN-key person.

As I expected, the code isn't exactly the best - but after looking at it for five minutes I haven't spotted any obvious glaring holes, which is promising.

I'll have a closer look on Saturday.

I'll try to keep it as glitch-free as possible, but I might have to shut it down for a bit while all the posts, images, critters etc are moved to their new home, so if WAN vanishes for a bit this weekend, don't worry - it'll be back soon.

I have no preference to workshy or not. If you want it to be the default then I would be happy for it to be so.

I don't remember that - was it just a custom Google search? That won't be hard to add.

Yeah it was on for years under AndyT but spreadsheet doohdah never kept it on when she took over. It was really helpful for finding old threads. You must remember it.

It did a Google search with "site:wereallneighbours.co.uk" after the query you entered.

Which you can still do in Google, obviously, but was a useful feature for the even less web-savvy than me (and the Scottish LOL)

My ISP has just charged me some money to keep WAN alive. This is a good thing, because it means stuff is happening, but it seems to be resulting in strange outages.

There are Things Being Done to rectify this. I'll keep you all informed.
