Things to do in Cambridge for cheap or free.

What's cheap or free to do in Cambridge? I can't think of anything. I'm thinking mainly of touristy type things. Brains of WAN, help me out here. Thanks :-)

I didn't visit any of the museums in Cambridge until many years after moving here: The Fitzwilliam Museum about 15 years ago, more recently Museum of Anthropology & Archaeology and Scott Polar Research Museum within the last 5 years.

I still haven't seen inside the Botanic Gardens or any of the museums on the Sedgwick site. I guess the coffee shops facing Kings College and Senate House must do a roaring trade with tourists as the most visible & touristy image of Cambridge. Some of the colleges are accessible if you look like you know where you're going and don't lol about

I also meant to see the Cambridge Union bar which is open in the day and looks reasonable, and don't think you have to be signed up to go in for a cocktail or whatever

The Fitzwilliam is free (and brilliant, I've literally been about once every 2 months for the last 8 years and I'm still not bored of it).

Other free museums are: The Anthropology Museum and the Segwick (Dinosaurs!).
The Wipple is free, but isn't open at weekends so it is hard to visit.
The museum of classical archaeology and Kettles Yard are both worth a visit, as is the Scott Polar (all free)
The zoology museum is also free but is shut at the moment.

The only colleges that you have to pay to get in to are Kings, St Johns and Trinity. They are apparently free for Cambridge residents but you need to have a special ID which I don't have. All the other colleges will let you in but aren't always open, you need to take pot luck. ALL the colleges are worth seeing in their own way, except perhaps the newer ones on Huntingdon Road. ;)

The Botanical Gardens and the Cambridge Folk Museum (Museum of Cambridge) both charge, but it's not very much.

I second Silent Rob with Kettle's Yard. The art gallery is really good (great exhibition at the moment on Gaudier-Brzeska) and the house is truly amazing!

Get your skates on then, it's closing for two years in June!

Completely forget the Museum of Computing History! There's also the Museum of Technology.

Also not free, but not very much and both well worth a visit.
