What's happening on Riverside?

Whatever it is doesn't look very good. All the emergency services in attendance. Never seen so many firemen looking so grim.

No wonder the firemen were looking grim.

The house next door to the Technology musuem was on fire this afternoon. Arsonists are clearly having a time of it on Riverside this week.

Fuck, I was in there last night for a half before bed.

That trumps last week's visit from the fire brigade, just outside my house and I didn't notice until the neighbours rang the bell - just a little bit of flooding the neighbours two floors down.

The fire brigade are still outside Tivoli, some of the houses on Mitchams Corner are without power, including The Portland, though the gig room is okay so they may be using that as the bar until the power is back. Outside it still looks okay, but word is it's completely gutted inside. Chesterton Road is cut off from Henry Giles House to Lloyds Bank, the still have a pump running and ladders over the roof spraying

I see on Twitter the power is back on now

It looks really bad from the river, see the pic.

At 2.30 the roads were still closed and firemen are still spraying water on it.

Just had a really good look at this from the Boathouse car park and beer garden. Every window on the right side is gutted, the roof has gone, lots of the brickwork is cracked and teetering inwards. I think that's it for the building sadly. I hope they save the frontage.

The door to The Boathouse was open when I passed a little while ago, but don't know if that means they're open for business

The Boathouse have just announced on their FB page that they are now open and their kitchen will be open from 4pm. They had a lot of loose brickwork overhanging their building and had to wait for a safety audit before reopening.

I think their beer garden is still fenced off though.

Quite impressive that the fire service managed to save the Boathouse completely unharmed now I think about it.

In other news I am very much enjoying the comments meltdown from fuming car drivers whenever the Cambridge News mentions this story. A few people were stuck in a traffic jam because they didn't check the travel news before driving into town, much less use the park and ride or get the bus. Oh diddums, boo hoo hoo.

I heard that one of the firemen got crushed attending another call out recently. I do think they take the piss with their 40% pay rise doodah. But I hope the guy recovers.

cycling back from the gym I saw The Boathouse is definitely open, though quiet. clearly hasn't picked up trade from Tivoli regulars

I don't resent the fire people getting a 40% pay rise, I say good for them. They do an important job that contributes to society. I say that anyone who does something important (as opposed to, say, bankers, estate agents, prime ministers or ticket touts) should get a 20% pay rise immediately because they nearly always don't get paid enough.

Weatherspoons now confirm that they do not intend to reopen the building.

Do you think it will be converted to more shit flats in a years time, or within six months?

The building should be converted into an amusement arcade where skinny men in oily Elvis T-Shirts can change your quid into twos
