Colleague: "My wi-fi is a bit shit; I've been thinking I should buy this." [shows me a photo, like this one.]
Me: "WTF is that?"
Colleague: "It's meant to be the best wi-fi router you can buy. It's over £300 though - worth it?"
Me: "Probably depends on your ISP. If they're shit, it probably won't make a lot of difference."
Colleague: "It's got eight aerials, though..."

mine only has three aerials but i can pick up wi-fi from three floors down with my mobile, think it was about £48 but you're absolutely right, this router would be wasted with a basic cable package

(But, yeah. First work out what the problem is, and then there's a good chance it'll be obvious how to fix it. But don't start spending money until you've done the first bit.)
