The ludicrous Cambridge traffic!!!!

Today I took the number 5 bus from Bar Hill to town.

Time 9.00am
The traffic was pretty slow so I set the MyRacks on my phone to see just how bad it was.
Started it off at Girton Corner and stopped at Bridge Street.
Distance: 1.78 miles
Total time it took: 34 mins
Average speed 3.11 mph

Now they are just starting the prep work for the Huntingdon Rd cycle way, but this wasn't the cause of the slowness. It was the excessive number of cars, 90% I would say only had one person in them.

OUR CITY IS BEING SNARLED UP BY PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIVE HERE!

Surely it's time to get a Congestion Charge on the go, charging people (who aren't disabled and able to walk, ride bikes, get buses)

The idea isn't new: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-23285298

Or charge single drivers, or give higher occupancy vehicles access to bus lanes: They do something like this in American cities.

End Congestion.

There was an accident around that way this morning, all my work collegues who came into work A14 way were over an hour late today.

I quite agree with you though, I got so fed up with wasting over two hours of every single day on the bus that I moved into town and then I made sure that I have always been within cycling distance of work. I don't intend to ever commute to work by car or bus ever again. I only drive when I have to for work and when I do I hate every minute.

The main problem is that the public transport system is not adequate to replace cars, and this will never change because so many people seem to think that motoring is their right, not a privilage, so any congestion charges or similar measures are always met by a massive hoo har by the right wing press. I can't see how this will change. Even some reasonablely sucessful innovations like the Park and Ride sites are shooting theirselves in the foot by charging for parking.

Personally I'm waiting for the fossil fuels to run out, then I'll sit back and enjoy watching the carnage that follows. :)

Charging for the P+R is so f**king backward.

That will be all the people who work in Cambridge but can't afford to live there, I would assume.
How about encouraging more flexible hours and homeworking (where it is an option) as another possible way of reducing congestion...even if all those that could worked just one day a week from home instead of the office it would surely have an impact on the amount of traffic trying to get in every day?

Where I am now (which isn't in Cambridge, so I don't have to battle in every day) requires me to be in the office most of the time even though it's just sitting at a desk with a laptop all day it really doesn't make much sense.

How about congestion charge for single occupant cars. Although not sure if the technology is there yet to enforce it. Or extending the monorail!

Apparently the hoverboard has been invented, but it requires a special conductive type of surface to work, so since we're all down with the Busway, maybe we could also build the world's first Hoverway for travel into Cambridge by hoverboard. I might even be tempted to move out to the sticks.

A bit like this, but without the train?

A little while ago I noticed that a young relative of mine had a skateboard. Thinking I used to ride these things and not taking into account that I am now old I thought I'd have a go. The result being that I nearly caused myself permanent disability.

I dread to think the damage I could do if I had a go on a real hoverboard. :/

Bring on the skate lanes on every major thoroughfare, they could intersect with the monorail.

Just imagine what they could build if they had as much money as BAM Nuttall.

"Greater Cambridge Assembly" - another unelected unaccountable talking shop composed of the great and the good! And Shirley Valentine rides again - is there no end to this person's abilities?
