My annual 'please help me sort out some holiday reading' reading thread...

I have recently read 'Jekyll and Hide' and 'The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night Time' (for a second time) and 'Wolves' by Simon Ings.

I'm trying to read Tristram Shandy but might not finish it.

I enjoyed 'Five Star Billionaire' by Tash Aw and The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion.

What you reading?

I might look into that. I enjoyed 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' - or strictly speaking 'am enjoying' since I was listening to it and haven't actually heard the end. It's on my wifes audible account and so can only listen to it when she wants to listen to it, too....

Perhaps it's not a bad thing that I haven't quite got to the end of nearly everything.

Have you tried Whichbook? I also like the Fantastic Fiction site, mainly because I know more or less what I want to read and it lists authors works in date order, unlike the library catalogue.

If you want to bore people to death even more than I do with facts about the Tour de France, I recommend Graeme Fife's book on the subject which he imaginatively titled "Tour de France." I've just started re-reading it for about the 15th time.

I've recently got into Ernest Hemmingway. I like how simple and easy to read his prose is, plus all his books are about death, violence, war and heavy drinking. This means he is very comforting to read after a stressful day at work.

I'm also reading The Game of Thrones books, now on book three. The books are much better than the TV series, mostly because they don't feature a completely pointless sex scene every 20 minutes just to help the programme sell. :)

If he's not careful he'll get himself voted into the European parliament on a protest vote by the under educated masses doing a walk like this...

We're going to be away when the Tour de Cambridge arrives. I can't help feeling slightly relieved about this - although it would have been nice to have been able to watch it on telly...

Being a cheapskate I have downloaded some free out of copyright stuff.. The Woman in White and Grub Street.

I've also got a sample of 'Lolita' to read. I'm pretty sure I'll download the whole thing even though it's quite pricey even the Kindle edition. It's about time I read this.

Had I actually met Hemmingway I know that i'd think that he was a bit of a prick, and he'd almost certainly think I was a wimpy ponce. Especially when he started enthusing about bullfighting, hunting and killing people in the Spanish Civil war. Additionally, he'd be able to drink me under the table without even trying as well. At the moment I'm finding his books are the literary equivalent of blowing computer game zombies to bits when you're angry and upset.

The woman in white is brilliant, I hope you enjoy it.

Wow, Women in White takes me back to "O" level English Lit!

If you liked The Curious Incident, try The Humans by Matt Haig. I enjoyed it very much. My favourite book last year was The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. It is a massive book, so good for a long holiday. I bought the book but ended up downloading it on my Kindle due to the weight of the thing. I am currently enjoying Peter May's Lewis Trilogy.

I'm reading the new Donna Tartt at the moment - really enjoying it.

Last one I read was The Road - McCarthy. Cheery holiday reading for you there.
