THE REAL 2014 Celebrity Death Cull Thread!

Time for a new thread after the sad death of Nelson Mandela last night.

As the Onion said "The first politician in all of history that is actually missed".

Angela Gimondi, at the age of 103. Angela was one of the very first postwomen in Italy and used a bike to do her deliveries. Often, she was helped by her son Felice, and when he turned out to be quite fast on the bike she encouraged him to cycle more. In 1965, he won the Tour de France, then he won the Giro d'Italia in 1967, 1969 and 1976 and the Vuelta a Espana in 1968. Only four other people have managed to win all three Grand Tours.

Ronnie Biggs, 'great' train robber.

Published by goosey gander at 7:53am on Wed 18th December 2013.

Death should rarely be celebrated but in Biggs case I think that the world is better without him:

1. He only had a minor role in the robbery, yet has spent his whole life glorifying himself with it.
2. The robbery caused the permanent disability of Jack Mills. It annoys me when people glorify it.
3. His song with the Sex Pistols was one of the worst peices of music ever made.
4. He's been on my death list for nearly four years and AT LAST I've got a point for him.

I have the rare version of the 12" which includes a drunken interview/chat between Cook, Jones and Biggs. Bizarrely, the only place in Cambridge that ever had that was Jays - it's crap obviously!!

Published by Dr Rhythm at 12:02pm on Wed 18th December 2013.

Cook and Jones always sounded like bricklayers when they were interviewed compared to Lyndon being all witty and sharp. At least Sid was generally quite funny, but he'd left the band by that point too.

2. The robbery caused the permanent disability of Jack Mills. It annoys me when people glorify it.

Also, his family continued to profit from it with big payments by tabloids for the story, whereas Jack Mills got £250 compensation (until an appeal was made later on).

Paul Torday. He wrote Salmon Fishing In The Yeman, which people know because they made it into a film, as well as some other thing.

Working in a library I find that as soon as a writer dies we get lots of requests for their work. Sometimes it is someone who hasn't been popular lately so we don't have much left in our county stock. And the people who had never paid attention to said writer before are appalled that we don't have more.

So my first thought when I read that Torday had died was "Oh good, we have lots of his stuff". This probably makes me a wrong 'un.

According to the highly respectable alienscalpel.com, "These objects have been scientifically investigated by some of the most prestigious laboratories in the world including Los Alamos National Labs, New Mexico Tech, Seal Laboratories, Southwest Labs, the University of Toronto, York University, and the University of California at San Diego. Their findings have been baffling and some comparisons have been made to Meteorite Samples. In addition some of the tests show metallurgical anomalies such as highly Magnetic Iron that is without crystalline form, combinations of crystalline materials mixed common metals, growth of biological tissue into or out of metallic substances, as well as isotopic ratios not of this world."

Quite a few other laboratories that got a chance to examine the objects reckoned they were more likely to be normal bits of glass, stone, metal splinters and the like, though.

There's a long story behind the two celebrity death cull threads. I'm quite impressed that both myself and Bigmal have been stubborn enough to keep our threads going for nearly a whole year. Since we've kept both of our threads going for nearly a year, am I hell going to cancel mine now!

Come December I'll let Bigmal create the sole 2015 thread, should he want to.

Porky Bennett. Also known by his nickname "Paul," cyclist Porky was a time trial specialist who, having set records early in his career, returned to racing after beating alcoholism and didn't let the fact that he was six stone overweight stand in the way of being even faster than ever. He continued racing up until a couple of years ago, until cancer halted his cycling. Died a couple of weeks back, aged 75.
