What I find really odd is that the licencees decided to jeopardise their reputation and their ability to make a living either by handing over the running of their pub to a violent bigot who wouldn't get within a million miles of being described as a fit and proper person, or by handing it over to someone they knew absolutely nothing about (even though he's their son). Must be one or the other, and neither makes any sense at all.

I agree with Nail Clinic about the mother. I've seen her be rude and aggressive to customers at the Salisbury. Her husband on the other hand always seems very friendly and polite.

Dave is a lovely bloke. I've never really got on with his wife either, but I always thought Ben was OK too - he came across as, shall we say, "not the kind of bloke who'd sympathise with the EDL".

It just goes to show how wrong your first impressions can be, really.

I don't think press releases played a big part in his life...

Agree with Wrongfellow re. Dave. He'd often join us in the pub's "garden" and had a good knowledge of the pub's history, which made him an interesting bloke. He sat out there with us on one memorable occasion when he should have been emptying the dishwasher, causing his missus to come out and have a right old hissy fit first at him and then at us for delaying him. That was, needless to say, extremely funny. I never met the son, but having found a few people who subsequently turned out to be fully paid-up Beeenpee (how many more "alternative" ways of writing it can we invent?) scumbags perfectly pleasant, I know these sorts of people can appear reasonable human beings at first glance

The University of Cambridge has said it will not take action against one of its head engineers, who was outed last week as a member of the British National Party.

Arthur Nightingale, the head experimental design engineer at the university's centre for industrial photonics, feared dismissal after his name was one of those on the list of BNP members published on the internet last week.

But a university spokesman said no action would be taken on the grounds that the political affiliations of members of staff were "a matter for them provided they do not affect their performance in the workplace".

This would include not promoting the party within the university or trying to recruit students, he said.

Nightingale claimed to have joined the party after Gordon Brown refused to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

He told the university's student paper Varsity that he "didn't have a choice but to look to the BNP or Ukip" because all the three main parties were pro-Europe.

But he claimed not to be active within the party despite holding membership.

The chief executive of the Equality Challenge Unit, Nicola Dandridge, said: "Higher education institutions were established to be places of free debate allowing the interchange of ideas. Indeed the promotion of free speech and enquiry retains special legal status within the higher education sector.

"Although Equality Challenge Unit deplores the aims and objectives of the BNP, the primacy of freedom of speech is fundamental and should be upheld even if the views expressed are widely regarded as offensive.

"However, universities also have social and legal obligations to promote good race relations on campus. It is hard to see how institutions can reconcile their duty to promote good race relations with staff being members of the BNP.

"This is particularly the case in relation to staff who have contact with students. Institutions may therefore consider that it is inappropriate for BNP members to have teaching and/or pastoral care responsibilities, or other direct contact with students."

We went to the Robin Hood last year and hated the place. There were loads of people in there so they're obviously doing something right, but we prefer pubs with character rather than massive TV screens.

There are some especially bland bars and gastropubs in Cambridge but the worst pub in Cambridge is / was the Snowcat, though I'm not sure if it is still open. I've never actually managed to buy a drink in there because someone started on me before I even made it to the bar.

Also of note is the Free Press, home to the rudest, most Stalinesque landlady in history and a pub populated almost entirely by snobs.

In terms of pubs I like I go to the Champion of the Thames and the Kingston at least once a week and I also like the Regedund, The Live and Let Live, The Flying Pig and the Elm Tree.

The Robin Hood has got to be one of the worst for utter blandness. It tries so hard to be value for money it's cheap and soulless. I have a huge problem with GK beer in that I don't like the taste but less like the corporate attitude of the company. The axe wielding sell out of pubs to developers is another reason.

I like pubs with well kept beer and decent food. Kingston, Geldart (although the beer on Tuesday's after he closes on Monday isn't awful), Blue (beer not the food) and Live and Let Live. Castle and Elm Tree are good too.

The Snowcat - subsequently the Grove – closed down a few months back after the traveller ban hoo-ha followed by a couple of nasty attacks. I've lived about 250 yards away for the last 10 years and have been in once - that was plenty, thank you.

The Sikh community is currently trying to buy it, to turn it into a meeting place.

I seem to remember that the landlady of the free press had short dark hair, but it was a good few years ago now. She kept telling us off for talking too loudly and kept continually staring at us in case we did anything wrong. When someone tried to smoke, IN HER BEER GARDEN, she really told us off. Later she told someone off for smoking on the other side of the road from the pub.

If it's under new management then I'll cheerfully withdraw all of that! But it was like having a drink in the Kremlin in the 1960's.

The Snowcat was always waiting for a fight to start and years ago other places frequented by Joe Wilks and his like were not places you went to unless you knew someone who knew someone. BB - you make the Elm Tree sound wonderful - I can't remember when I last went there - I will have to visit sometime.

Robin Hood used to be one of our sixth form pubs when I were a lad - along with the Unicorn and the unlamented Chequers (which was gloriously appalling - even by the standards of the late 70s - bright lights, formica tables and rowdy clientele).

The Elm Tree is indeed a damn nice pub, and one I'd go to a lot more if only the Dev wasn't nearer.

He is my son & yes he did spend New Years Eve with us & he has been helping by taking all the ivy down in the garden but he is not being paid & due to people like yourselves who don't actually know him or the facts, he is unable to get a job.He would rather help out than sit around all day bored.

Okay, seeing as you ask, what you *should* have done is to nip this in the bud when you first got a whiiff of it. Do not try to tell me you knew nothing about this until it all came out. You had to have known about this beforehand and the action you took, if any, was just not enough. You must have seen your son become more and more arrogant after taking on a role at such a young age. You can't not have noticed the change in him. You put him in such a position of power so you were responsible for managing his behaviour to an extent, both as a parent and an employee. If you want to start being obtruse regarding naming myself and your assurance to the Greene King management (Steve Look) that was concerning The Red Lion. The assurance given by you was passed on by GK as 'they (the Green's) have reassured me that he will not be frequenting or living at the Red Lion Cherry Hinton'... that was 25th Nov 2011. Quite clear and succinct. Then he was seen frequenting the pub by a patron over the Xmas period. Now, regardless of semantics of it's your son or not the issue raised was that you had given an assurance he would not frequent or live in the pub and without being sarcastic I am sure we all know what the definition of the word 'frequent' to be.

There was noo need to come here and inform WAN that Ben was visiting the Red Lion again...why, we know you have retracted your assurance to GK and that he will continue to visit when ever you want him to... that's just fine.

Can I just suggest landlady that you don't resurrect this thread if all you want is people to leave it be? I think we'd all pretty much accepted that he was going to be visiting you at the Red Lion despite your earlier assurances to GK that he wasn't. You've also done a fairly successful job of pissing some of your customers off over the years, by your rude and snotty attitude, so you're never going to have people's full support. If you work in the service industry and you're rude to people then don't be surprised if it comes back and bites you on the bum.

Ben has not been involved with EDL for at least a year when he realised that they were not standing for what he thought.
This only started up for us again when somebody emailed GK again when we were seeing our son. On the day that GK came to see me in November I was in bits, crying & trying to run the red lion, I honestly have no recollection of what I said apart from Ben would not live or work here. We have kept to this in both pubs but as a mother I am trying to help my son, who needs help to turn his life around & I won't abandon him.
You can't please all the people all the time & I apologise to anybody that I have upset over the years. We can not always get on with everybody as much as you may try but I would imagine you have only heard -like this site- one side of the story. This thread I guess throws up a few issues - I have to say it has made me think about how I would react, as a parent, if I found myself in a similar position to landlady. If one of my kids behaved as hers has done, I am certain I would challenge them privately - but I imagine I might also stick my head above the parapet, if not to defend the views or attitudes or behaviour, but because I suspect it's a fairly instinctive parental response.

Ironically, all this reminded me that I used to drink in the Salisbury around 1981 with a guy who I was at CCAT with who used to spout old-style colonial lazy ill-considered racist claptrap. At the time I walked round, like many people of my age, festooned with assorted anti-racist and other political badges (I still have the views - I just don't wear the badges these days)and I used to enioy a good political argument - eventually the person in question moderated his views and started borrowing my reggae albums. (Lending records, like badge-wearing, is another thing I haven't done for years).

It would not matter what I wrote, It definitely is not a PR excercise but defending myself against all your commenys aimed directly at me. I did not know that this site even existed until HappyTed emailed Greene King once again. Yes Happyted we know who you are. I wish I had never heard of this sight but it is my natural instinct as both a parent & a person to defend. I have said all along I do not defend what my son did write & I have tried to get you to come & meet us so you could here where my son came from & what contributed to his feeling this way as we have sat down recently & he has explained it to me. Such as living in Kenya, a largely Muslim country where he witnessed a man being beaten to death for stealing a mobile phone & another man being put in an oil drum & burnt alive. Walking to work in Mombassa & seeing a body just thrown by the side of the road. He lived along side a young Muslim man for 6 months whilst doing voluntary work in N.I & Kenya. He got on like everybody else with most people but it did leave him having seen an awful side to a mostly Muslim country.
These are the reasons I wanted you to meet with us, so you could hear his life experiences, he has probably experienced alot more in his life that you will in your whole lives. This is definitely not an excuse as there is non but now you know why I stand by him.

You won't be hearing from me again & no doubt you will pull this apart but it is not something that you would normally put on a web site. I am his mother & I will stand by him & try to help him like any decent mother would. He has not committed muder or sold drugs to kids or raped anybody. His only real crime was what he wrote on his facebook but there is more to that than I wish to put on this site. What was written was vile, I agree, but I will still help my son. For those of you don't like me fair enough you are entitled to your opinion unlike other people in this area whose opinions I have been hearing since November but are frightened to speak out because they see what happens to Ben. David david you have actually just made me laugh! So that is how it works is it? you are allowed to say what you like about us & we must just take it! Finally you admit there is a refurbishment, it started 2 weeks ago with the work on the windows & the extension being built at the back. The fence & sign were blown down whilst the pub was open & customers helped David push the sign partially back up!!!
We have not used the longer opening hours yet & are keeping them for when we re-open.
People have commented to us how much cleaner it is outside.
We have a very good name in Cherry Hinton from the times that we ran The Unicorn & we are doing very nicely thank you but how would you know anyway as you don't come in here from your comments. There has been no vandalism at the red lion. I am the landlady. We are having a major refurbishment which started 2 weeks ago, when they started on the kitchen extension at the back of the pub & mending the window frames that are rotten. We will be closed for 3 weeks whilst the work is carried out inside. The fence & sign were blown over by the wind whilst the pub was open & customers helped push the sign back up. We have not used our later opening hours yet.
David & I are NOT racists, we have nothing & never have had anything to do with the EDL. The only people who are not welcome at The Red Lion are people who fight or do drugs. Anything else you may want to know our number is 01223 248826 , feel free to call us. The refurbishment has been planned for the last 7 months & all our customers knew this.

Ben has been HELPING clear the fence.

I'm in favour of development. Doing nothing is not an option. The current proposals are a huge improvement of a car wash, petrol station of indeed a McDonalds/Costa drive through or some a happy clappy community garden. Cambridge is a world research and academic centre and we should do everything to promote that and investment into the city. This is appropriate for a high density scheme - the only problem is people in Cambridge are just dead set against any form of change or development - other people want to live and study in the City too - lets not discourage them!! Authorities must assess their housing demand for the area and then must meet those targets to from now on (which will basically cause an explosion in housebuilding on any available site),
Affordable housing is no longer a requirement unless there is a demand (though to be fair there usually will be),
Plus there's a delightfully scary clause which says along the lines of "innovation of a buildings design is more important than aesthetics". Woo Hoo!

On the plus side communities are able to bypass the planning system to build projects they all agree will benefit them, which is a good idea (even if I don't know exactly how it will work other than referendums at Parish Councils, which can be easily bribed by the rich local landowners who thrive at these things).

The previous owners took the old Sailsbury, gave it a completely soulless refurb and turned it into a characterless hole. It's no surprise that it completely died on it's arse within 6 months. WHY do pub landlords thing it is a good idea to remove all the character from pubs with "modern refits"?

Anyway, that was the previous owner. I am glad that the new one is making a good thing of it.

We should probably point out that neither the current owner, nor the previous one, were connected with the Eee Dee Elll. That was the one before that. Bumping this thread might mislead new (ha!) readers of WAN and I don't think it is fair that the new owners should be tarnished with the buildings past. Good luck to them I say.
