If you could choose anyone...

...who would you like to be for a day, and why?

(Who's going to be the first to say "Berlusconi, for bunga bunga"?)

I'd be tempted to go for someone at the head of a regime I'm not fond of, and do something irrevocably damaging to their cause, then let them sort out the mess when my 24hrs was up.

But aside from a tactical move, I'm alright just being me thanks. It's taken long enough to get used to it, I don't think I'd enjoy being temporarily transmuted.

Brian Robinson, and the day would be the 2nd of July 1958.

Did he win a stage then? Rode with Simpson didn't he?

That was the day he became the first ever British rider to win a stage and earn the right to wear the maillot jaune, but withdrew in Stage 20. Stage 7, 170 flat km from Saint-Bireuc to Brest, but he won on a technicality and Stage 20 the next year when he won fair and square by almost 50 minutes might have been a better choice had I have checked The Yellow Jersey Guide To The Tour De France before choosing the earlier date. I think he retired after winning the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré in 1961, having personally persuaded Rapha Geminiani to sign up Tommy.

Just started reading "Put Me Back On My Bike," by the way. Very recommended.

Yeah, could have been. I wondered why my post hadn't appeared on the Savile thread. Well spotted with the birthday!

I read that last year, excellent book. I think Fotheringham is an excellent writer about cycling, obviously understands the sport. Currently reading his book about Coppi, more social history here.
Oh, and yes, you're right about JS :)

Probably the best writer on the subject around, IMO. Not read his Coppi one, but his articles in the Guardian and Observer are better than anyone else's in the other papers and even the cycling magazines. Just finished his mate Jeremy Whittle's Bad Blood which was interesting and started Willy Voet's book last night.
