A carpenter hit a nail which was 5 1/2 cm long through a piece of wood 2 3/4cm thick and into another large piece of wood. How far did the nail go into the large piece of wood?

So I'd suggest you've either got to make the fractions into decimals, or have fractions that work together:

5 1/2 cm (5.5) - 2 3/4cm (2.75) = 2 3/4cm (2.75)

or

5 2/4 - 2 3/4 = 2 3/4

Whichever you find easiest to picture when you're working it out.
