So I'd suggest you've either got to make the fractions into decimals, or have fractions that work together:
5 1/2 cm (5.5) - 2 3/4cm (2.75) = 2 3/4cm (2.75)
or
5 2/4 - 2 3/4 = 2 3/4
Whichever you find easiest to picture when you're working it out.
