Final Scream

Well, well, well....

For those that remember the early 80's there was a gothic punk band from Cambridge called The Final Scream. They were dark and twisted showing their punk roots. Connections with 13th Chime, Fire Department, Vanishing Point and now Long Bone Trio amongst others.

Dusting on the shelfs was some live footage from a Cambridge gig in Fisher Hall. Here is a link to one track

A 12" 4 track vinyl EP was never released as intended. Only 2 copies were ever seen. Recorded in 1983. 27 years later, this Lost EP has just been released on Itunes. Better late then never!

Are we letting that one go?

Ha, DJ Ohmygod that is a good point. That was a bad line!

I would love to see footage of all sorts of old Cambridge bands but, sadly, it just won't exist. A bit of time travel with a Flip in hand would sort the problem!

If I had a time machine and a flip video I'd probably spend my time doing more important things like filming the parting of the Red Sea, getting decent footage of the first plane hitting on 11th September, proving once and for all who killed Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and Nancy Spungden, that sort of thing.

Though I'd probably just end up making bootleg copies of millions of lost films, going to see Jimi Hendrix and pretending to be on the phone at Chaplin Premieres.

I'd kill my grandfather, I hate that guy.

Yeah - I would love to film some of the big old testament stuff - cosmic!!

........or I would just go back to visit myself and give me a few stern warnings about my future behavior!!

If some older guy told me not to do something when I was younger then It would probably just make me more likely to do it, unless I used some pretty complicated reverse psychology on myself.

There is, however, a lot of band footage which doesn't exist. There's only about 10 minutes of non reformed Velvet Underground in existance, 2 songs of the 13th Floor Elevators. No one bothered to film The Stone Roses at Spike Island at all, despite it being the biggest gig for about a decade!

Didn't know that about VU - it's kind of staggering given what *did* get filmed at the Factory.

Published by arthurCRS at 2:23pm on Tue 21st December 2010.

It's a bit more than 10 minutes for VU. There's the "Nico Researsal" and about 4 or 5 complete tracks from various places - but it's all really bad quality film. It's def not much more than half an hour.

If you go back further then there are only two photos of Robert Johnson in existance at all.

Maybe he got the Devil to delete them all from Facebook.

I was going to start a new thread to see if anyone knew anything about a Cambridge band called The Fire Dept that I recently read a blog post about. But then tried out the restored 'search' found a reference to them and so thought I'd drag this thread back up instead.

Anyway, this was the blog post, which rather suggests that the White Stripes may have been a tad influenced by them.

Plus the word from Wiki.

Yep, I saw that and as the Fire Department were the fav group of Billy Childish and Billy Childish was a hero of the White Stripes I suspect they all knew about each other.

The drummer for the Fire Department was also the guitarist in an old Cambridge gothic band called Final Scream,t hat starts this thread. A Russian music label (Wondervogel Records) has just released a retro CD of the stuff. Includes recording and live material.

13th Floor Elevators = I like.

They were excellent. I've just read the book about Roky Erickson.

Going back to my comments about filming bands above, if I had a time machine I would still like to go back and make some nice HD footage of bands who don't really exist on film. The Elevators would be high on my list. Even their only official live album is basically just a studio session overdubbed with inappropiate cheering from (I think) an ice hockey game.
