[Event Chat] Green Mind & The Junction present WISH YOU WERE HERE - 25/09/10

This is idle chat about the event...
Green Mind & The Junction present WISH YOU WERE HERE
Saturday 25th Sep 2010 | Venue: The Fort St George
Price: £12 | Time: 3pm - late | View event details

Not knowing Cambridge too well could somebody advise me on the following please.

How long does it take to walk between
Portland Arms and the Haymakers
Haymakers and ARU
Portland Arms and ARU

There's loads I want to see on early and late at Wish You Were Here but nothing around the middle of the evening so planning to go and watch This Town Needs Guns and Oceansize at the ARU as well. Does this sound doable even if it is bloody stupid?

And any idea how much those pedi-cab things are between the Portland and Haymakers?
Cheers

(Stupid link to google maps doesn't work)

Google maps says it takes 13 minutes to walk from The Portland to the Haymakers. I'd say it was more like ten.

Much appreciated - never used google maps before.
Ten minutes - great job.
Looks like its a goer but a bloody expensive day.

The nifty little Cambridge walk it guide says it's 12 mins from the Portland to Haymakers and about 20 from the porty to ARU...

Lonely The Brave were incredible last night. Haymaker's sound (and beer - what they had left - they ran dry pretty much) has improved a great deal. Only other band I saw were Unit 9 who hurt my ears... blasted out the cobwebs. Missed bands due to too many friends, not enough interest and the inability to pay attention. Seemed to work well as a whole... had to cab it back from Haymakers as we were too drunk, too bloody cold and too far away from home.

Published by aracoonsfarts at 1:16pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

I don't think they did mattstep but after Hayley stepped in and dealt with it, I went into meltdown - too close was it to my previous experience of violence in a pub. Put a real downer on the night for me :(

I stayed at one venue but it was good. I also had a little bit of a hangover today too since last night was the first time I have drank (other than the odd single quiet pint) for about two months. I had three pints and couldn't finish the third because I felt too drunk. Amazing how quickly tolerance goes innit?

Published by DJ Ohmygod at 7:34pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

A superb job - congratulations all round.

BB - think I can guess who these individuals were as I watched a group of guys (who I've never ever seen at a Cambridge gig) make the most disgusting comments continually about one young female performer at the haymakers before making their way to the Portland. Not my usual experience of Cambridge gigs.

Wilderness of Manitoba and Sad Day For Puppets were both excellent as were Oceansize who I also went to see at the ARU. Gutted Victoria and Jacob were on early as I arrived at twelve twenty and they were just finishing.

Bring on next year but it will have a lot to live up to by all accounts.

Published by whiffin at 8:15pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

Sorry about Vic & Jacob, but Envy never showed up and we took the decision to put them on early. Possibly not the right call, but we've got things we'll try and improve for next year.

Published by SB___ at 8:22pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

SB definitely the right call as the Haymakers (I think) were the only venue still operating live music and at that time of night I think nearly everybody who wanted to see them would have already been in the venue. I guess somebody hadn't showed so no worries (just make sure they come back soon!).

I was late due to Serious Promotion Clowns who advised me doors to Oceansize were at seven etc on my e-ticket but on printed tickets it apparently said 8. Then when they'd finally opened the doors we were held in a 'holding bay' until about quarter past nine. First support band didn't come until half nine. Now if I'd known that seven was indeed eight and first band wouldn't be on till half nine etc I'd have caught a bit more of Wish You Were Here. However Oceansize were awesome and the sound wasn't too bad...

Published by whiffin at 8:35pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

Opened late? That used to happen all the time when we did gigs there because of sound problems. Interesting this sort of thing still happens.

Published by SB___ at 8:41pm on Sun 26th September 2010.
This reply has been edited, last edit at 8:42pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

Sound guys certainly seemed a little stressed and I don't believe either support band got much of a chance to soundcheck. Seems like fault maybe be shared between promoters and venue in this case.

Published by whiffin at 8:51pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

Useful to know this sort of thing. Obviously we're looking at ways of expanding Wish You Were Here for next year, so it's good to know about other venues.

Published by SB___ at 8:55pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

Now how about Legends (or is it called something else now?) Greenmind are still responsible for one of my favourite ever gigs - Unicorns (and Decemberists) at Legends in 2004 (I think)

Published by whiffin at 9:01pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

There was four of them whiffin, and one of them was massive - over 6ft6 i would say. Does this sound like them?

Published by Boudicea Bambaataa at 9:04pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

Legends is a good idea actually. I remember that Unicorns gig. It was about the only date on the tour where they didn't all fall out. Oh yeah and Green Mind is two words ;0)

Published by SB___ at 9:11pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

BB - think so. Maybe sound like stereotyping but to me they just looked a little different from the normal gig crowd in the Portland (no offence to anyone but don't normally see 'smart' jumpers with collars etc in there). In my most generalising way I did kind of guess their occupation (god I should be on the sorpranos)

SB - sorry - I should know, I had that album years ago but haven't dug it out for ages.

Published by whiffin at 9:21pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

Twas a cool night (i was working the Haymakers) but some constructive criticism if I may...

Wristbands should be available from all venues (even if there's an allocated amount (20 at each venue?) Door staff could then liaise (via phone) with a central person (The Portland) and let them know how many they have/ haven't sold. I turned away in between 20/ 25 people who didn't know they had to go to The Portland to get a wristband. They turned up to see a band and couldn't be let in. After telling them they need to go to The Portland, I didn't see a majority of these again (although that doesn't mean they didn't go to the Portland and then beyond...)

An allocation of cheaper tickets for people who only want to go to the gig at that venue? Again small numbers.

Guestlists. All guests had to go to the Portland. Even though they only came to see a band at the Hay. Several pissed off people then missed half a bands set to traipse a 30 minute round trip to be allowed in

Programmes. The very scarce programme could of been shrunk down to a 1 sheet and handed out on the door.

How about some seminar type things next year earlier in the day? How to put on a gig? Designing posters, etc, etc...

All in all, a great event and I hope next year will be even better.

BTW, totally the right choice to bring Victoria and Jacob forward. You can't have that many people in a venue with low booze stock and not have any acts for over an hour.

Published by JazzRTC at 10:48pm on Sun 26th September 2010.

We will continue with the central ticketing, as every other event of this nature works in the same way and it simplifies things massively. As for the cheaper tickets for just one venue, we simply can't. Most venues were budgeted on £12 sales and charging say, £6, wouldn't have covered expenses. It's something people will get used to as the event goes on. Also I would add that plenty of promoters have charged £10 for single venue all dayers.

That said, for guests that is something we'll change, as I agree that was something we could have done better and doesn't have the same problems associated with it as we would with tickets.

There were 400 programmes printed out, so everyone should have had one. If they weren't all receiving one then obviously we need to find out why.

Published by Three Headed Lizard at 12:13pm on Mon 27th September 2010.

Reckon so. There's no other festivals to compete with and it's just before the gig season kicks off properly.

Published by SB___ at 12:14pm on Mon 27th September 2010.

It's definitely a good time to have it, I think :) Could coincide with the stooodents coming back too - do they attend local gigs much?

Published by Three Headed Lizard at 12:16pm on Mon 27th September 2010.

As someone playing the Boat House, I think that was one of the warmest audience responses I've ever had, and it looked like Paul Goodwin who came on after Karmadillo felt equally humbled by the crowd response. I didn't get round too much owing to my buggered knee, but Lonely The Brave really stood out at the Haymakers.

Thanks to all involved - and a special shoutout to hairyarsenal for organising my wristband and taxis & the suchlike for an invalid. Even let him carry my charango!

Published by SB___ at 12:20pm on Mon 27th September 2010.

SB, something to be aware off but none of those 400 programmes were at The Hay, which is why I mentioned it.

Didn't mean to be negative with my comments but thought I'd throw in some observations to see if they helped for next year.

Ace time though.

Published by JazzRTC at 12:47pm on Mon 27th September 2010.

Ill just say again how much we (Unit nine) enjoyed the gig , we were a little worried we might clear the venue, but to look up two songs in to see so many faces made me very very happy as apart from a few they were all new people. really restored my faith in cambridge as a mixing pot of music. everyone we dealt with on the day was nice and easy to get what we needed sorted.
