[Event Chat] Bricoloteque, The Small Deaths, Narcissists - 18/08/10

This is idle chat about the event...
Bricoloteque, The Small Deaths, Narcissists
Wednesday 18th Aug 2010 | Venue: The Portland Arms
Price: Donations | Time: 8pm | View event details

Three locals, all very good.

Here is where Rocket Dog, DJOhmygod and Ed____ build the hype for this gig up to frenzy point.

If it wasn't enough that THE SMALL DEATHS are playing, there will also be cake, films, probably some sort of gimmic to allow me to force junk on people and it will be FREE to get in (though I suggest that you put some money in the Fez).

The small deaths!? hahaha...see.

The Narcissists is a pretty good one for an indie band tho! I'll give you that one! :D

Do you mind if I use that poster to stick around town RD? I might change "£free" to "£donations" though, if you don't mine me ammending your wonderful work! I can get the image from facebook if it's OK with you.

Narcissists aren't an indie band per se. Musical predjudice FAIL.

Don't call Narcissists "The" BTW. It's just Narcissists. Band members have been very strict on this point.

I'm definitely there then... I bloody love Bucks Fizz

I wanted to make a joke about Bucks Fizz and skirts, but couldn't think of a way of doing so without offending Hannah. Cheryl Baker went on to a successful career in childrens TV. No one knows what happened to the other one, who's sole claim to fame is that she had her skirt ripped off in front of millions of people. Poor lass.

David Van Day was briefly in Bucks Fizz ;-]

Published by daggg at 12:34pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

It's a good thing that David Van Day didn't stay long because there would have been some bad headline puns to be made after the van crash which nearly killed the entire band. It's not just Metallica and Alien Ant Farm which that sort of thing happens to.

And still no one knows what the other girl was called. Such is life in a pop band.

Published by Silent Rob at 12:44pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

I love you all. Looking forward. Thanks for putting on these shows Rob, youre the bullet.
(feel compelled to make up for my cheekiness above)

I think there is going to be some sort of Art / Cassette Stall at this too. Need to get more details from Holly.

Published by Silent Rob at 1:15pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

And cheers Mr S News. This is the last gig I'm putting on for a while because I am struggling to find people to put on. I'm often emailing bands I want to put on and they hear the mention of balloons and cake and then run a country mile for some reason. Humourless so and so's with their leather jackets, cheeks sucked in and photo sessions against brick walls. So indie wank...

Published by Silent Rob at 1:21pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

Oh well thats a shame, cuz I like your anGle, but I know you'll do something/more else

This sort of thing is just like people deleting their account and leaving WAN forever. You know they'll be back sooner or later. :) Exceptions are obviously made for the greatly missed Clarissa and Jude1, who have not come back again. Good fellows those woman.

I was Ahpook before I went Silent. I don't really know why I changed. I don't even like my username very much, but it's sort of stuck. Don't get me started on "I don't really like Kevin Smith (except Dogma)" rant again.

Published by Silent Rob at 1:49pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

And had another account or two before that.

Published by SB___ at 1:51pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

You see I am actually 60% of the people on WAN and spend most of the day talking to myself as different characters. Not many people know that either.

Published by ahpook at 1:51pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

Not sure I remember ahpook at all!

Published by Old Rocker at 1:53pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

Rants? We don't usually need to 'get you started'. :)

Published by SB___ at 1:54pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

Ahpook lurked for most of the time.

There is nothing like a good rant to clear the air and to purify the soul. Especially in a park or street corner at 3am when completely alone. It makes you look cool.

Published by Silent Rob at 1:57pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

I can't find anything for Narcissists. And 'The' beforehand surrely improves any band name!? All the best bands are 'The' somethings...something short, that is!

Published by Mia A Gain at 2:06pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

'The is just, like, sooooo passé...

Published by JazzRTC at 2:11pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

So do they have a myspace then? I want to hear! :D

Published by Mia A Gain at 2:13pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

“The” in band names was most successful in three separate musical phases only.

The first successful use was when pop bands started to have cartoonish names to progress from the “Mr Musician AND HIS BAND” mould. Examples: The Beatles, The Monkees, The Turtles, or The Byrds. It sounded fun, larger than life and bouncy and cool. Pop music is great isn’t it?

Second use was during the late 70’s punk explosion when you had "The" followed by a single syllable word with connotations of extreme violence. Examples: The Clash, The Buzzcocks, The Ruts, The Damned. Punk was the new way of life and it was nasty and realistic, man.

Third great use was during the late 80’s C86 / indiepop phase. You had "the" followed by a blank little word, which didn’t mean very much. This suggested that these bands were real, down to earth and the exact opposite of those tedious blaoted old fools playing Live Aid and stadiums. Examples: The Smiths, The Housemartins, The Shop Assistants, The Pastels. It wasn’t very glamorous, but it was emotional and real.

(the) Pink Floyd fit with late 60's / early 70's rock and early heavy metal band name mould where you had two words which were unconnected with each other, but not quite. It sounds unglamourous, but really hairy and heavy, or alternatively bit complicated, difficult to listen to and proggy. See also: Iron Butterfly, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple or King Crimson.

Pink Floyd dropping "The" from their name marked their departure from the 60's whimsical psychedelic pop songs of "See Emily Play" to being a full out rock band since thier name fits both moulds.

I didn't suggest anything about liking or not liking any of these bands, just pointing out generalising trends in their names. I quite like King Crimson...

on the back of my one Iron Butterfly album is a lovely paragraph detailing how the drummer hewed his own sticks out of wood from a nearby forest.

Going back to the Fizz... I went to see them last year live. It was 3 of the 4 original people (Bobby Gee was notably absent) and they were awesome. I went along for the cheese factor and expected them to be terrible and they were really good. They actually had some rather good tunes back in the day (once you get past Land of Make Believe and Making Your Mind Up). The 'one that wasn't Cheryl Baker' runs her own stage school these days.

Oh, and David Van Day is an utter testicle. We don't speak of his besmurching of the good Fizz name. It never happened, right?!

PS - DJOMG... maybe you could rip off Bricoloteque's skirts. I'd pay to see that!

Published by pops123 at 2:57pm on Thu 29th July 2010.

Oh and, for Silent Rob, the 'other one that wasn't Cheryl Baker' is called Jay Aston.

I bloody love Bucks Fizz... see, it's true!

Early 90's shoegazing band names. One single syllable word. That's it. Sounds a bit blank, druggy and covered in reverb. Examples: Blur, Ride, Curve, Moose, Lush.

As footnote I am developing a splendid collection of foreign coins from the Fez. Last night I got 2 Euros and 10 Spanish Pesatas. Pesatas haven't been currency for a decade, I am most confused. Whoever you are, you have done well. When I next do a night I want a pre demimal half a crown and some Icelandic Krona.
