breaking a D lock

Mr LP's D lock won't open. The key will only go half way in. Any suggestions on how to break it & free his bike? Where can you borrow or hire big bolt cutters in Cambridge & would that work? Have tried the car jack trick and that didn't budge it.

Get a city ranger to come out and rescue him, they will release the bike for free.
Unless you are not a service user in Cambridge. In which case you should not be appealing for help on WaN.

We do live in Cambridge, honest Bigmal. However, the bike issue is in Histon.

I had a D-lock that wouldnt unlock so I gave a good soaking in WD40 and after 5 mins or so it unlocked it was a build up of rust inside the barrel whick rotates the full length of the tube.

I've successfully used WD40 too. Make sure you put it in the key end and in the prong holes too.

As per the above - plenty of WD40 down the barrel.

If you really need to break it, strike the locking bar (or projecting end) with a big club hammer or a sledge hammer, that breaks all but the very strongest.

thanks for all the suggestions. Tried WD40 but the lock was old & I think one of the thingys was stuck in the whatchamacallit. Tried the jack but it kept slipping & was frankly very dangerous. Went to McKays to buy a hacksaw but couldn't be arsed with the effort that was going to take so bought an angle grinder instead. Oh the power! Lovely. Cut through the lock like butter & made dramatic sparks. It was fun & I'm trying to think of other bits of metal that may need slicing.

What the...? I just looked out of the window and some bugger's nicked my bike! Angle-ground right through the lock, the thieving scumbags!

Well I think it's pretty obvious who the culprit is, don't you LILLY-P?
