Beach Blanket Bingo won it in 1995 I think - can anyone confirm this?

Published by Three Headed Lizard at 3:26pm on Thu 29th October 2009.

Beach Blanket Bingo won it in 95 as The Saffs were in their heat. This was back in the day when the winners of the heat didn't go through to the final but there was an overall scoring from all the heats. Top 5 went through. Beach Blanket Bingo lost their heat (The Saffs won) but were allowed through on audience vote (even though Saffs won Beer Cheer and the heat we didn't make the final).

Then Beach Blanket Bingo won the whole thing. The Saffs were invited back to win a special prize which equated to 4 days in a studio. Which was nice.

sours grapes....never!

Nice one Jazz....a special entry in this list then for the Saff winning the Beer Call :-)

Five to go, unless there were more comps before 88.

If you do a wikipedia page for something like a band competion then some self appointed moderator usually deletes it for "not being notable enough". Some tosser has already deleted my expertly researched pages for The Bull and Gate, and The Vichy Government among others. *sore point*

Colonel Gomez?

Published by steve w at 3:53pm on Thu 29th October 2009.

this is from Johnny Dee's website (colonel Gomez)

Colonel Gomez performed where ever they could and in 1985 came the bands 'big break'.

They entered the Cambridge Rock band contest held at the prestigious Guildhall, and made it to the grand final.

BBC radio Cambridgeshire were the events main sponsor, and one of their presenters, Trevor Dann was acting as a judge along with Radio One D.J's and other musical luminaries.

Dann, coincidentally was also producer of top rated BBC 2-music show 'Whistle Test'. It was decided that the Final of the Band contest would be filmed for use in the show.

Colonel Gomez won the award for most entertaining act as they performed 'Satan's Son' (own song),

And 'Shakin' all Over' (Johnny Kidd song). During the latter tune John had stripped off his clothes to reveal a pair of black swimming trunks, and as the performance reached a climax a Red Penis popped out of the swimwear, the audience loved it!

The 'Whistle Test' was broadcast on March 27th 1985, all hell broke loose!

Because of the 7PM-time slot and the fact that many people thought that John had exposed himself there was uproar. Two police offers came to his house and confiscated a video and the prop itself for investigation.

From wikipedia: 2010 famously saw Scrotal Threat crowned the last ever winners of the Cambridge Band Competition. Shortly after their infamous "Bloodgate" winner's celebration, organisers vowed never to allow such shocking scenes to be visited on the unsuspecting Cambridge public, and withdrew support for the competition indefinitely.

I remember that there was a gig at the Boaty with that years winners and audience vote winners. The bands (in no particular order) were Black Not Green and My Friend Irma. Calling Orson definately won it the year before Alice Band. I've a feeling that they came one year after BNG/MFI. Is it possible that BNG/MFI won in 1999/2000 and the few above that should be pushed up a year, thus filling the gap at 2003?

Published by splattergrabs at 8:31pm on Thu 29th October 2009.

Black Not Green didn't win it - they lost out to Simplicity in 1999.

As pointed out above Houston 500 won it in 2003

"I remember that there was a gig at the Boaty with that years winners and audience vote winners. The bands (in no particular order) were Black Not Green and My Friend Irma". I put that gig on and thought I'd be the only one to ever remember it! Just to clarify Calling Orson became My Friend Irma. Both bands were great.

My Friend Irma were audience vote winners in 1999 at The Junction. Great final that year, with Simplicity, Black Not Green, Pogul Magee & Buried Trevor (I think). We did the "winners gig" at The Boat Race (as mentioned above) with Simplicity a few weeks later. MyFI did a few gigs with Black Not Green that year too...

Pretty sure there was a band called Blue who won in 1990 or 1991 -- I remember going to the final because I really liked the Dear Johns. There was also a memorably dire band who had a song called 'Poleaxe The Poll Tax'.

Published by sam i at 11:42am on Mon 2nd November 2009.

I think this was "The Big Blue", with Booga (from Ezio and Booga) on guitar. I think they did win, but not sure if it was 1991 or 1992. Have some old copies of "Scene and Heard" up in the loft somewhere that have reviews of the comps in. Will dig them out!

Published by trigger at 6:28pm on Mon 2nd November 2009.

That sounds right. I'm sure they won, and it was 90 or 91 not 92. I remember missing their entire set because they were on first.

This is how I recall things...
This replica were voted in 1989 Cambridge Rock Competition Best Young Band but were not runners up. They went out in the first heat as my band and the Brotherhood went through from that heat. The winners in 1989 were Cherry Orchard. Shiny Cadillac was the Cherry Orchard song favourite with the judges.
Spirit Walk won it in 1987. Ian Docherty the lead singer joined my band for the 1989 competition and they had split up by then. Tom Dalpra ran out and stage dived during our slot in the semi in '89... got it on vid... (later he replaced Ian Docherty...)
I think Big Blue won it in 1990...

That latter article refers to Nutmeg doing a final ever gig at the Junction on August 1st 1992, which isn't true. Their last ever gig was at the Junction Open Air on Jesus Green, which was August 22nd 1992.

Seem to remember it was their '1977 prices' tour where tickets were three quid. It was freezing, it was sold out, but the shivering ticket tout outside was so pissed off he sold us three for a tenner anyway. The Manics were dreadful and got totally upstaged by Nutmeg. Go down the front for a 45 minute set, stagedive lots and then go outside in a -4 weather front and see what happens.

Published by SB___ at 9:46am on Tue 3rd November 2009.

Just on the phone at the moment with Tom. Last gig was Aug 1992 Jesus Green and the second to last was at The Junction with This Replica and Jacob's Mouse, late summer. The Junction gig was touted as the last but they then did the Jesus Green gig. Tm said they supported The Mannics was in Dec '91.

Tom joined my band in October '92 (got some of the reel to reels he did with us from day 1!) and as he said it was seamless they did some gigs without without Rich towards the end but he returned for the final few gigs.

Tom said Nutmeg played at the 1990 final as special guests... the year after he was thrown out for stage diving... he had to take 'tests' before they would allow him back in.... and that was all down to a 'certain' person I can't mention that did that...

Tom thinks the winners in 1990 was the singer from Children of Some Tradition, with his new band.
'92 was the last year at the Corn Exchange and Tom thinks that was Big Blue won it either '91 or '92 .
'93 was the first year at the junction, and he thinks that year Ezio won it.

I'm suggesting he does a Nutmeg and This Replica at The Portland... he likes the idea...

you heard it here first folks... let the rumours start...

This Replica's singer lives in Aussie but comes back occasionally so it may be then...

This Beeno were in it with Richard Heeps... i think he's a well known photographer now.

Surfin Druids were in it one year with Paul Garner who went on to TV with Chris Morris (Morris was a bass player in Somewhere in the Foreign Office in Cambridge), Russel Brand and others...

Hot Chip
Jeremy Warmsley
Akira

First ones that spring to mind.

Published by SB___ at 1:32pm on Tue 3rd November 2009.

Usual boring corrective about Hot Chip :-) They had already been formed in London and had an EP out on Victory Garden which you could buy in Parrot. Then some member(s) came to study here and they recruited some student members here (none of whom remain I believe, without checking), and it was that lineup which played at the Portland and Boat Race. One of Electrelane also studied here but they never played here I don't think.

Last year I read an article in Varsity on 'current Cambridge bands' and hadn't heard of any of them, so I'd guess at least some of those were student bands. *unuseful response*

they have their own circuit... there were regular band nights down Kings Cellars and Cats cellar bar. Used to play it around 1980-85. Did fitzs, Trinity, Selwyn Diamond... loads of gigs going.

Some play in town bands, a few in a funk band that has a residency every other week at La Razza.

'87 was Spiritwalk.
'89 was Cherry Orchard
'90,'91 and '92 I'm a bit vague on. The Big Blue won it one of those years I'm sure, and another winner was a band whose name escapes me but I think their singer was called John and sang in the '86 competion with Children of Some Tradition if that's vague enough?
It moved to the junction in '93 I think. Sharon King(Miss Piggy) organised it.

Early on at The Junction ('94, I think) was won by a sort of heavy gothic band whose name I think was based on the lead guys surname. Fuck if I can remember their name but I was one of the judges and I definitely remember that. Don't think Summerhouse won it twice.

John Peel was a judge a couple of times at The Corn Exchange, as I remember. Nik Kershaw was as well once! The Comperes I remember were Graham Buxton( Cambridge singer, guitarist, songwriter now with The Lonely) and Mick Gray(ran the Corn Exchange for a few years). I took over in '95 at The Junction and compered with my mate Chris Fuller until 2007.

Band competitions are obviously innately a bit ludicrous and the results mean nothing in themselves. In 2003 a band called Atlas played and I thought they were brilliant; they lost. In 2007 they turned up on Channel Four as Envy and Other Sins and won the Ch4 unsigned band competion! We didn't hear much from them and they've now released a farewell album, so there you go.

In the late eighties it was quite a big thing in Cambridge. There were loads of heats with about seven bands per night and there would be 1000 people there every Tuesday to watch. For the final they opened upstairs as well and sold-out the 1500 capacity.

It was great to see the final back at The Corn Exchange recently after a 15ish year break.

I'll stop rabbitting.

I went to the 1990 final (29/4/90); here's my, not exactly erudite, observations of it at the time:

"The rock comp was really stupid. The Night Jars didn’t win! That wasn’t appreciated by the crowd."

I noted that "The Blue" won.

Hi gang... I was in both Color Factory and Beach Blanket Bingo...Color Factory were finalist in 1990 and came second in 1991. Beach Blanket Bingo won it in 1995 which was nice because we were first on in the first heat and initially failed to get through.... only to get a call weeks later saying we got through to the final on some "wild card" vote....... and then rather unexpectantly ( to both us and no doubt all the other bands) went on to win it thus collecting a cheque for a grand .......... which was nice.

Also if anyone has that 1990 rock comp video featuring color factory....dear johns...this replica...nightjars....crossland ...then i'd be rather interested to acquire it or perhaps you'd be so good as to youtube it.

Meanwhile both color factory and beach blanket bingo do have myspace sites for ol' times sake:
http://www.myspace.com/thecolorfactory
http://www.myspace.com/beachblanketbingouk

Finally, to my memory.... the best "cambridge" bands of that era were:

Nutmeg (needs no explanation)
This Replica ( the most original and innovative)
Jacobs Mouse ( devastatingly powerful live and deserved their success)
I thought I told you ( clever, different and awful but in a good way)
The Nightjars ( good tunes, good fun and a most endearing "singer" )
The Desmonds ( Funny as f*ck with some great songs)
Tribe of Dan ( a thoroughly rocking good act indeed )

P.s. Does anyone remember an act called the seagulls who played in 89 or 90 i think. They came on ....told the judges they were all c*nts , gave em the finger throughout, made a godawful racket and overan their set... eventually having the plug pulled on 'em ....... f*cking hilarious!!!

Backlash at the Cambridge Rock Competition 1985

My band was in a heat (heat 1 I think) of the very first Cambridge Rock Competition at the Guildhall in 1985. Here's the photographic evidence. Me (leather trousers) and Sharon Davies (now lives in S. Francisco) were the backing singers, Ed Bird lead singer, Morgan Holt on keyboards, can't remember the lead guitar guy who was older, Matt Finlay on bass I think, Pete Hazelwood on drums. It was our first proper gig. We had rehearsed quite a bit at Hills Road 6th form where most of us went (although Ed and Morgan were at Long Road). Very nervous on the night, Ed gave us something which calmed us down (valium I later found out!). We came 3rd out of 5 in our heat, which we were quite chuffed about, especially as we'd had terrible feedback (sound-wise) - we were convinced someone was deliberately scuppering our chances, well Ed was... We also won the prize for most people on stage at the same time. I remember 3 of the songs, one in particular I can still do the harmony for! Happy days. Karen Roos (Karen Garner then).

In response to Steve W re: Beach Blanket Bingo ... The band you're thinking of that were championed by Liz Kershaw and played the Radio 1 roadshow was Crossland .
Beach Blanket Bingo formed from the ashes of both the Ely bands: Crossland and Color Factory.
And to reply to oldrocker ... Beach Blanket Bingo did indeed support Oasis at the boat race pub in May 1994 ... split up in 2003 but have recently reformed and will be supporting Atomic Kitten, Blue & Bucks Fizz @ Ely's Party on the Hill on August 31st 2013 .. Rock n roll!

Erm Whiskey Before Breakfast did not win in 1997.
I was living with Kev at the time and one of the judges lived two doors away.
They would have very easily been the best band there but their music is hardly original and so I know for a fact they did not win.

Now that you've realized that you have a pretty face, take care of it! Coco Chanel once said that there is no such thing as ugly women there are only lazy ones. Establish a skin care routine to help you avoid wrinkles, sunburn, and blemishes. Invest in a good moisturizer that will lock the moisture in your skin. As much as possible, opt for natural ingredients in your face care products.

1985 - The Detective were winners. Heat 4 was was one of 6 bands won by Exploding Hamsters in which Chris & Paul, an instrumental guitar duo aged 10 and 12, were runners up. On the finals night Chris & Paul were both nominated 'Best Guitarist' and 'Best Young Band'. They won the 'Best Young Band' title.
