"Man's best friend is beautiful and affectionate, an ideal pet.
Cats are the same, we make up their names and our love for them is real.
Listen up, I gotta ask you, how can we be so cruel?
You say you care, that's a lie.
My true compassion is for all living things and not just the ones who are cute so I do what I can.
I wanna save lives and I've got a plan.

Under the table he'll eat your dinner like the veggies we can't stand.
What kind of meal would he make?
We don't want to ask it.
Tradition is all that keeps him alive.
Listen up, I gotta ask how can we be so cruel?
You say you care, that's a lie.
My true compassion is for all living things and not just the ones who are cute so I do what I can.
I wanna save lives and I've got a plan.

Why am I so upset.
Don't even own a pet.
I am not trying to press my will.
I am not the first to say...
THOU SHALT NOT KILL

Full is all you want to feel.
We eat to stay alive, but it's their lives we steal.
I think we'd like to change,
but most of us are stuck, that's why cats and dogs have
ALL THE LUCK "

I love meat....have my steak cooked "blue", love brussells, love falafel.....I like Quorn stuff too...I am a human dustbin.

I like sprouts in my veggie stir fries too. The little baby frozen ones work well with this and are actually really tasty and still have a "bite" to them.

I like veggie burgers with bacon... I don't like regular burgers mcuh, there are a few I can handle when starvation dictates, but although I lvoe the concept of a burger, gristle, lips and mouthroof aren't my favourite things.

I did see a programme one where the person talking (about anal sex) saids the inside of the anus is the same tissue as the roof of your mouth, so if you run your tongue over the roof of your mouth you get a similar sensation.

Go on, try it.

Do the Chinese actually farm dogs? I thought they just chucked in whatever they could find.

I'm now thinking of fields full of farmed dogs - we could have dog sheep or dog pigs. I saw an episode of One Man And His Dog once where Phil Drabble said "Eh Oop, the bitch is camera shy", regarding a nervous contestant!

Perhaps it's because historically there would have been more herbivores (on land) which (bonus) were easier to kill. Pyramid of biomass, or something like that. When it comes to fish, although lots are 'carnivores' many stick to plankton, of which there is lots++ at the base of the aquatic foodchain.

I couldn't eat a dog. Might try cat...

(not really)

Tuna and salmon (to name but two) eat other fish, mainly.

Mrs Rocker once visited a market in China and stumbled upon a cat and dog stall, where they were literally blow-torching the animals to death.

I knooo, but there's shed loads of little fish for them to eat, and they are in turn carnivores. And there are things that eat tuna and salmon too. The sea is a generally carnivorous place. Whereas on land you tend to get herb - herbivore - herbivorivor. I know this is probably rubbish. Please humour the fool.

> The Brits were given a black boiled egg which i think is buried for 6 months before being eaten.

These are normally called "thousand year old eggs" I think, and are a Chinese delicacy. Indeed they are traditionally made by burying fro a few days, after being covered with quicklime. I tried these in Japan, and they are indeed delicious. They look strange indeed, but the taste is extremely subtle. Basically, the alkaline "cooks" the egg, but without the production of hydrogen sulphide (which requires high temperature, and gives boiled eggs that strong "eggy" taste). So it surprises me that the people in that programme found them disgusting - perhaps the sight put them off.

there's a bit of religous background too, Jews and Muslims will only eat animals with cloven hooves and multi-chambered stomachs,in other words herbivores also they won't eat pigs.

christians have same roots as those religions but they've relaxed the rules over the years.
it's not so long since christian wouldn't eat meat on a friday. in fact fish and chips is still a tradition on a friday.

wikipedia

Religious rites and rituals regarding food also tend to apply this distinction, classifying the birds of the air and the fish of the sea separately from land-bound mammals. Sea-bound mammals are often treated as fish under religious laws - as in Jewish dietary law, which forbids the eating of whale, dolphin, porpoise, and orca because they are not "fish with fins and scales"; nor, as mammals, do they "cheweth the cud and divideth the hoof."

Religion does have something in the herbivore thing. The meat is less contaminated with dangerous bacteria and will keep longer. So the religious rule was just a sensible health one at the time. Pork used to contain more worms, hence that rule. Its OK now but why pork used to be well cooked.

Another vote for sprouts here. As long as they still have a bit of bite to them (or especially if they're shredded and friend with bacon - yum!).

Maybe I should try growing sprouts...

I'd be happy to eat most things, as long as they've been killed humanely. I'd quite like to get an air rifle actually so I can kill squirrels and ravens for food, oh and pigeons.

"When you ask people why they eat chickens but not cats, the only thing they can come up with is that they sense cats and dogs are more cognitively sophisticated than species we eat..."

Actually I think most people I know - certainly most people I've talked to about this - are fully aware that it's purely cultural.

"The trouble is, we're used to seeing them as herds," he said.

"You see 1000 cows or pigs and think, 'Oh, they're all the same.' But there are actually huge individual differences."

And you can replace "cows or pigs" with "foreigners", or "Tories", depending on your political leaning...
