Drowned in Sound

So I went on this site for the first time today. I cannot believe some of the people who post on there! They make the indie music snobbery on WAN look tame! Do these people actually believe what they're saying? Crazy!

It's hilariously full of the worst kind of snobbery, where the users think they're a lot more underground than they actually are.

The threads where indie boys ask why girls only like them as friends are the best.

Published by Robadob at 5:17pm on Tue 22nd July 2008.

lol i was going to laugh about the hamfatter thread, more specifically the person going "Oh! You can't be in a band and want to make any money out of it at all and if you do i won't like your band". Oh DEAR. People need to eat or buy new equipment occassionally and that £50 you get from having a good crowd down the Man On The Moon does help occasionally!!!

Published by Rahaha at 5:20pm on Tue 22nd July 2008.

> Nuts and Raisins: That's such a derivative statement, I was saying that years ago before it was cool.

Hahaha. What really gets me is that they only talk about indie music, a subgenre of "popular music" (in its loosest sense). No mention at all of proper music, by real composers. That's why I always find indie music snobbery so funny. REAL music snobs wouldn't even class it as music! It's much too far down the art hierarchy...

Yes you get some nice jazz fans. It's also a nice form of music, in that it is improvised but within very tight and complex structures. So it's somewhere between serious music and pop music IMO.

You do get some arsy jazz fans though i.e. the ones that have to reveal to everyone that they recognise a reference...

the average listener who doesn't care to explore deeper into the artists music will likely just let it drift by them like a pleasant breeze, but those more adventurous and fascinated by music (like us - at the risk of sounding upmyownarse) will dig deeper and scratch away at the surface to find the intent of the song. It's pretty easy if you're interested in a band to research their history, quotes, and so forth. Then you realise whether the sentiments expressed in the music are sincere or not. You cannot have the level of sincerity that all great bands have (according to their fans at least) if you are motivated just by money.

Start here in the hamfatter thread on DiS, really, I cannot believe arthur manages to not just go 'your mum!'.

Yeah I did read that. Never mind that some artists deliberately distance themselves from their work, believing that it should speak for itself.

Do you ever read the music column in Private Eye? Under the pseudonym Lunchtime O' Boulez. It's always incredibly petty and catty, so I guess snobbery is always as bad whichever sphere of music it pops up in.

I promise you that the DiS messageboard is at least 6.57 times more interesting than this one. I think it's sad that you equate an incredible enthusiasm for music with 'snobbery'.

Published by Ben_DiS at 6:07pm on Tue 22nd July 2008.

No, but musical enthusiasm doesn't necessarily come with a large spoonful of pretension, actually being fairly conservative with their music tastes, following the crowd (most recently with Los Campesinos and Johnny Foreigner, where signing up practically has being a fan of them in the ToS) and having the attitude of a pious, over-earnest indie fan circa 1985.

Ben_DiS- we equated snobbery with snobbery! Alright, all of them aren't twats. On that thread there were some reasonable responses. They were drowned in the sound of the twats though.

I think I might have said "nerdy" rather than "twatish" - I think WAN can be safe in the knowledge that it is a great deal more interesting and amusing than DiS which reminds me mainly of the kind of conversations we used to have behind the counter at Record & Tape Exchange in the late 80s - muso nerdy to the max!

Published by Dr Rhythm at 6:41pm on Tue 22nd July 2008.

I think I might have said "nerdy" rather than "twatish"

I dunno, I've lurked on there for years, and it's really pseud nerdy, in that there's lots of people who don't really know as much as they think they do. There's some shocking piety in there, as well. The thread about Brian Eno being ultra capitalist sell out scum because he'd produced the new Coldplay album was genius for all the wrong reasons.

Still, it could be worse, it could be the ilx music forums, which are full of intolerable snobs who do know their stuff, rather than 19 year old indie boys who like to think they do.

Here is some classical music snobbery by fans:

I'm not denying that they make great music. I love a lot of indie music, really I do. But playing hard and energetically is not the only criterion for great music. I really think you might be surprised if you returned to classical music. It's a different and subtler set of pleasures, that are not as immediately accessible or obvious as band music.

We're lost in music. Feel so alive.
I quit my nine-to-five.
We're lost in music.

Have you ever seen some
people lose ev'rything?
First to go is their mind.
Responsibility to me is a tragedy.
I'll get a job some other time.
I want to join a band
and play in front of
crazy fans.
Yes
I call that temptation.
Give me a melody. That's
all that I ever need.
The music is my salvation.

We're lost in music;
caught in a trap. . . .

In the spotlight
the band plays so very tight
each and every night.
It's not vanity. To me
it's my sanity.
I could never survive.
Some people ask of me: What
are you gonna be?
Why don't you go get a job?
All that I can say:
I won't give up my music
not me
not now
no way
no how.

We're lost in music
caught in a trap
caught in our muslc.
No turning back. We're
lost in music.
We're lost in music - don't
take away our music

feel so alive
feel.
I quit - I quit my
nine-to-five. Yeah
we're lost in music.
We're lost in music -
melody is good to me.
Caught in a trap

all I was saying is maybe it allows you to com at a piece of art or music with another perspective. Maybe from your own argument, going to art college was utter bollocks because you are being taught other people's notions about art and not deciding for youself. It's all nonsense in the end, and anybody's theory and ideals are as as good as anyone else's. I'm never obsessively pedantic about music, I don't care what label a record comes out on who produced it etc etc. However when I find an artist I really engage in, I like to know their backstory so I can (hopefully) better understand where they were coming from.

I'm not sure who said working fulltime at music was fake, sounds like a bit of extreme chinese whispers to me. If I was a pro muso, I would find it offensive too. I and most others on the thread were talking about/debating whether it affects the quality or appreciation of the music if the SOLE aim was to be a giant cash cow. Writing the most banal and inoffensive lyrics ever in order to appeal to everyone, writing music that follows the current trend because it will chart well, etc etc. Of course finances are important; sadly enough money makes the world go round.

I can't see the problem with having a bit of a debate on something, it's interesting. I never take myself too seriously but it's sad to see everybody in such an uproar over a few hypotheticals.

> However when I find an artist I really engage in, I like to know their backstory so I can (hopefully) better understand where they were coming from.

I can see where you're coming from, for example I've often read biographies of composers I like (there's a very good one of Stephen Sondheim I like!). But what worries me about doing this is that many artists struggle to distance their private lives from their art, believing that it should speak for itself. This is especially a problem in literature perhaps, where people have a tendency to assume that authors' characters are based on themselves.

Published by Nuts and Raisins at 8:29am on Wed 23rd July 2008.

thanks for a well reasoned reply. Yes it is bad when people pry into the private lives of artists of any ilk. It's more to do with a personal interest in finding out more than a right to know. I think it's a horrible consequence of fame that human beings get put on a pedestal and scrutinised to an extreme. Letting art speak for itself is an interesting idea, but I think ultimately, it was created by a person for a purpose, it's alright to want to know that purpose. I think it might just be in our nature to attach or search for meaning in things.

Published by Bamnan at 8:35am on Wed 23rd July 2008.

> it's alright to want to know that purpose.

I agree. There's nothing necessarily wrong in wanting to know about the private life of an artist, and lots of people do this judging by the size of the biography section in most bookshops. Often though, one may think it says something about what a particular piece of their art is about, when in fact the connection is spurious.

An example I mentioned above is one of Sondheim's shows "Company", where many people speculate that the lead character is a version of the composer himself. The fact that most of the character is coming from the playwright rather than the composer (who wrote the character's lyrics) diminishes this view.

Having said that though, even if a composer claims that none of their work is based on their own life, some of it must creep in. Thus the relationship between artist and art is a subtle symbiosis.

Published by Nuts and Raisins at 8:46am on Wed 23rd July 2008.

yes, maybe I had been over-exaggerating the importance of the artists views in relation to their work. I did study one piece briefly though while I was at uni (I think it was a module on marxism) where the artist was commissioned to paint some bourgeoisie guy, however he wove in some subtle criticism of the upper classes. I don't think I would have known that or understood it without knowing the artist's background. This was a pretty vague response I know, but I don't remember it much.

Well you seem a little angered. I understnad your point, and what i said about art college was just to remind you that we all learn by observation and imitation. Observing other people's ideas and values, imitating and changing those values to our own. Yes you will end up thinking for yourself in the end, but you learn from others who know more than you on a particular subject. It's the same as when I want to learn about an artist, their life, opinions, etc...I may not agree with them and come away thinking "I prefer my take on your work to your own" but at least i will have the information. How do I know what you learnt at college: I don't. How do you know what I choose to find out about music: you don't.

It was never never never inferred by me that making money from music makes you a fake. If that impression came across, I'm sorry, and I'vebeen trying my best to put it right. money from music does not = bad music. money being regarded as more important than the music = (or may =) bad music.

Published by Bamnan at 9:11am on Wed 23rd July 2008.

A bit of an aside but it's amusing how some artists end up with lucrative recording contracts, but then want to get out of them and end up releasing dross to satisfy their album quota. E.g. Mike Oldfield's later albums (whatever people think of him), which he released under the name "Michael Oldfield" to differentiate them. I also heard a story about Frank Zappa (I think) once who turned up with a pile of 7 albums of shit, and then said "there's my seven albums I owe you" LOL.

Save your love for Roma and for me

Darling I will love you endlessly
Even though you're far away from me
I can't forget the words I told you
How it felt to love and hold you
Love like ours will last eternally

Save your love my darling, save your love
For summer nights with moon and stars above
A serenade I long to sing you
The reddest rose I'll always bring you
Save your love for Roma and for me

Even though it's been so very long
The memory of our love still lingers on
I can't wait to hold and kiss you
Don't you know how much I miss you
Darling sing for me our lovers song

Salva l'amore cara, salva l'amore
Le notte d'estate la luna l'estelle lassu

Its the time of year
Now that Spring is in the air
When those two wet gits with their girly curly hair
Make another song for moronic holidays
That nauseate-ate-ate
In a million different ways
From the shores of Spain
To the coast of Southern France
No matter where you hide
You just can't escape this dance

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jumbo jet
And then bury all your clothes
Paint your left knee green
Then extract your wisdom teeth
Form a string quartet
And pretend your name is Keith

Skin yourself alive
Learn to speak Arapahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an eskimo
Eat a Renault Four with salami in your ears
Casserole your gran
Disembowel yourself with spears

The disco is vibrating
The sound is loud and grating
Its truly nauseating
Let's do the dance again

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Yes you'll hear this song in the holiday discos
And there's no escape in the clubs or in the bars
You would hear this song if you holidayed in Mars

Skin yourself alive
Learn to speak Arapahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an eskimo
Now you've heard it once
Your brain will spring a leak
And though you hate this song
You'll be humming it for weeks

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jumbo jet
And then bury all your clothes
La la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la
La la la la la la laaaaaaa

You might want to sing it note for note
Don't worry be happy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don't worry, be happy......

Ain't got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
Don't worry, be happy
The land lord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don't worry, be happy
Lood at me I am happy
Don't worry, be happy
Here I give you my phone number
When you worry call me
I make you happy
Don't worry, be happy
Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style
Ain't got not girl to make you smile
But don't worry be happy
Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don't worry, be happy (now).....

There is this little song I wrote
I hope you learn it note for note
Like good little children
Don't worry, be happy
Listen to what I say
In your life expect some trouble
But when you worry
You make it double
Don't worry, be happy......
Don't worry don't do it, be happy
Put a smile on your face
Don't bring everybody down like this
Don't worry, it will soon past
Whatever it is
Don't worry, be happy

I can agree with your comments Grabsplatter. But without knowing the context of these tests, they weren't necessarily a bad thing. Often you get better at improvising by restricting yourself first. If you can learn to think about every stage of the improvisation, you are then much more focussed and better at it later on. Particularly so in jazz where the harmonies are so complex. It's a bit like drum textbooks that drill exercises and rudiments into you.

Yes I agree. But it's a compromise between theory and practice, that's all. It's never random notes one's playing - what may feel subconcious has actually taken a lot of practice beforehand.

I'm certainly a better drummer for knowing rudiments. It makes things easier, but I must stress that I'm not as hung up on technique as some, as some of the best technicians I've heard are also among the most dull drummers.

Absolutely. But Buddy Rich is a counterexample.

Published by Nuts and Raisins at 12:49pm on Wed 23rd July 2008.

This is similar to languages. I did a degree in French, and did okay at it because I worked hard at it, but I was never a "natural" linguist. You could quite easily identify those people on my course who had natural talent, and those who just worked at it. The "working at it" can get you so far, but not as far as if you combine it with innate talent, I think. Same with music, in fact, I did quite well at clarinet, but again, only through working at it.

Buddy Rich is unique, no? Saw him on his last UK tour and it was incredible, even at the age of 705 or whatever he was.

I didn't think you were a bad drummer, Nuts and Raisins. I mean, you'd have to be quite good to keep that mob you used to play with in something resembling an even tempo. ;-)

sometimes I think being too good at an instrument technically, can blind you to how good simple things can sound, simply because they seem obvious or effortless. I'm by no means a great guitarist, I'd say I was average to good, but I've been trying alot lately to remember the benefits of simplicity.

It's difficult to hear the same piece of music over and over again while you're perfecting it/recording it, and not come out of it thinking it's rubbish and being completely deflated by the whole experience. I wonder how people avoid this?

What do I care? I didn't join DiS to get respect, I read through the site for a while before and decided there were some (ok just a few) genuinely interesting things being discussed. It's a shame you're giving some of the decent folks there such a bad name. I feel sorry for you if your idea of respect is recieving an amusing PM on a message board.

Now come on, you're not really genuine are you? ;)

No, my idea of respect is having 55,000 posts, having two non-consecutive relationships with DiS members and being widely regarded as one of the best posters on the entire forums. My point was, the pm proves nobody has any respect for YOU. Learn to read before you try taking on someone like me.

What's wrong with the world, mama
People livin' like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma
Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah
Madness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

It just ain't the same, always unchanged
New days are strange, is the world insane
If love and peace is so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong
Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone
So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin'
in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover
The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the love, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' our wrong direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us

Parody:

1. A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule. See synonyms at caricature.
2. The genre of literature comprising such works.
3. Something so bad as to be equivalent to intentional mockery; a travesty: The trial was a parody of justice.

This has to be 1 or 3.

Published by marcosthebubble at 4:54pm on Wed 23rd July 2008.

There I was, a-digging this hole
Hole in the ground, so big and sort of round it was
And there was I, digging it deep
It was flat at at the bottom and the sides were steep
When along comes this bloke in a bowler which he lifted and scratched his head
Well he looked down the hole, poor demented soul and he said

Do you mind if I make a suggestion?

Don’t dig there, dig it elsewhere
Your digging it round and it ought to be square
The shape of it’s wrong, it’s much much too long
And you can’t put hole where a hole don’t belong

I ask, what a liberty eh?
Nearly bashed him right in the bowler

Well there was I, stood in me hole
Shovelling earth for all that I was worth I was
And there was him, standing up there
So grand and official with his nose in the air
So I gave him a look sort of sideways and I leaned on me shovel and sighed
Well I lit me a fag and having took a drag I replied

I just couldn’t bear, to dig it elsewhere
I’m digging it round cos I don’t want it square
And if you disagree it doesn’t bother me
That’s the place where the holes gonna be

Well there we were, discussing this hole
Hole in the groud so big and sort of round it was
It’s not there now, the ground’s all flat
And beneath it is the bloke in the bowler hat
And that’s that

All mouth no brains this guys a pain,

You can scream and cuss,

He'll put his boot up your dogs arse and lick your lasses puss.

He'll nick your fags take your booze and tie fireworks to the cat,

And inform the dole you're working,

Just who is this twat ?

He's a cunt, he's a cunt, he's a C-U-N-T cunt,

With his broken teeth and his ugly face,

He's a little dick teaser that's out of place,

He'd sleep with your granny and bite her fanny,

And wears his trousers back to front

And he farts up cocks and he's riddled with pox,

Cos basically he's a cunt.

He dyes his hair to match his clothes,

And he smells so much he fills your nose,

With a small tattoo to prove he's tough, and an earring the fucking puff.

You've never heard of this human turd, he'd be a pig if he could grunt,

And he talks a load of crap as well,

Cos basically he's a cunt.

He's spots and warts and blackheads too,

Doesn't know a joke unless it's blue,

And the Vicar's daughter swears and cries he fucked her with a pack of lies,

Maybe you've heard about this man, well you haven't far to hunt,

Cos it's me you pack of bastards,

Basically I'm a Cunt.

I'm a cunt, I'm a cunt, I'm a C-U-N-T cunt,

With my broken teeth and my ugly face,

I'm a little dick teaser that's out of place,

I'd sleep with your granny and bite her fanny,

And I wear my trousers back to front

And I fart up cocks and I'm riddled with pox,

Cos basically I'm a cunt.

Bernard Cribbens?

Published by marcosthebubble at 5:22pm on Wed 23rd July 2008.

No, Val Doonican.

Most definitely Bernard Cribbins and produced by the one and only George Martin!

Published by Dr Rhythm at 5:26pm on Wed 23rd July 2008.

Thus dispelling the cruel jibe that he never produced anything worthwhile apart from the Beatles.

Oh. My song was by Val Doonican. Possibly.

Bernard Cribbens is a minor deity in our house, as I may have mentioned before.

Clearly the best thing he ever did was Charlie Drake's "My Boomerang Won't Come Back"!

Don't forget the "Ray Cathode" single George Martin did with Maddalena Fagandini in 1962...

To be fair, lots of people have speculated it was a hoax. We can't be as cool and on the ball as you.
