What do you make of this? £40 for the physical record.

While the disc box is priced at ?40 and includes the digital download, the price when purchasing just the download by itself is set by the buyer (plus a transaction fee of 45 pence if price paid is more than ?0.00). On purchase, the buyer is prompted to type the desired price, with the text "It's up to you" as an explanation.[15]

nice!!!!

Was the album actually made up their arses or was it put there afterwards?

"Radiohead say they are current planning a "traditional CD release" of 'In Rainbows' for early next year"

fair enough...

This sucks. I want a proper CD but I'm not bloody paying £40 >:(

radiohead. one of the world's most overrated bands. fact.

You are incorrect.

No he isn't - they are seriously overrated.

Remove Thom and they would be interesting - with Thom they are dire!

I always found it funny that some of my mates used to have kleenex moments listening to 'difficult' Radiohead music/songs, but won't give equivalent tracks by other bands a second listen. There's definitely something inflated about the Radiohead brand.

I take it you mean they were wanking over it mowgli.

Radiohead are a tricky one for me. I thought OK Computer was really really overrated when it came out, mostly because of the lyrics which I thought were obvious and trite, and certainly not profound. I guess I have the same reaction to any record that gets an absurd amount of attention. There was always a sixth form quality to a lot of Radioheads stuff of that era. I still don't really get OK Computer and why it is apparently brilliant.

I really like bits of Kid A and, particularly, Amnesiac though (Like Spinning Plates for example). Then Hail to the Thief came out and I really really liked it, probably because there were flashes of humour. I guess I should qualify this by saying that I don't like bands that deal solely with cynicism or depression- I find it cliched and adolescent, and doubly annoying when said bands are millionaires.

Published by mwhite (not active) at 1:10pm on Mon 1st October 2007.

Overrated by whom? Most people I speak to hate them. The ethereal beauty of OK Computer was one of the main things that stopped me killing myself when I was suffering from depression. If you don't get Radiohead then that's your loss.

Published by DJ Ohmygod at 1:16pm on Mon 1st October 2007.

There aren't many bands around that are as good as Radiohead. That's not to say that there aren't any - there's just not many.

I don't own a Radiohead record. But I think they are one of the best UK bands of the last 20 years. I have loved them live, their videos, listening to their music... great band.

I know so many people who used OK Computer as an audio Prozac and lived to tell the tale...

I'm amazed to hear OK Computer described as 'audio prozac'. I can't imagine anything more irresponsible than giving someone with depression the album to listen to (thinks back to Father Ted) :o)

Unless it has some kind of never-before-seen mood inverting properties?

I'm rubbish - I like Pablo Honey and The Bends much better than anything afterwards. I think Kid A is bloody horrible. Dunno why I'm even bothered about this new one :)

I thought Pablo Honey was a pile of fetid shite but that they've got immeasurably better since then. I liked their more experimental sub-Aphex Twin phase.

Published by Three Headed Lizard at 1:51pm on Mon 1st October 2007.

That's the thing- everything that people have said about Radiohead ("ethereal beauty", etc) I can see in Kid A - present, but I don't see in OK Computer.

My wife was very disappointed when she discovered that Thom Yorke was not in fact singing 'For the greyhounds' at the end of Paranoid Android.

We agreed that it would have been much better if he was.

It's polite of them to warn us about this album's existence, i suppose. Not that anything can really be done about it at this stage.

i like practically everything they've done, and a recording i have of Glastonbury 2003 is one of my favourites of all time by anyone.

The Charlatans are allowing tehir new album to be downloaded free from XFM too, with Alan McGee saying ""Why would you volunteer to join the army for 10 years unless you had no choice? Record companies are kind of like the army - very regulated. We were really excited when Xfm got behind us and were as enthusiastic about the download as we are. They are the first people to embrace music for the people.
The band will get paid by more people coming to gigs, buying merchandise, publishing and sync fees. I believe it's the future business model."

Personally, i love radiohead and will probably be sad enough to shed out 40 notes on some nice double vinyl/cds/books, but will download the album for nothing at work too :-)

No, I don't think there's a formal connection. Radiohead received colossal plaudits for ok computer, but I don't think its because they experimented with their popular sound.

I think there's a tendency to attribute worth to depressive music even if its just an overgrown sixth former whining ineloquently, when a band like Madness who covered depression and insanity with a jaunty beat are denied 'worth'. Discuss :-)

Published by mwhite (not active) at 5:16pm on Mon 1st October 2007.

Not really - Radiohead's more experimental stuff is quite good because it features far less Thom. It's their "popular" sound material that makes me want to vomit.

I'll add that I sound far more narky here than I actually intend :-) I quite like BITS of radiohead.

Published by turkeyphant at 8:58pm on Mon 1st October 2007.

Balls to the £40! I'm printing my own artwork as soon as the first person sticks it on the internet. Forcing those who want a box to buy the vinyl is obviously completely stupid.

(aside from this: Radiohead are right good but not everyones cup of tea. This said, a majority of their detractors are just terrified of being seen to like something that is very popular.)

Yeah, I remember when OK Computer came out, when they first started edging away from guitar rock, and it was seen as musically great but complete career suicide (ironic, considering they were less popular before it's release than they are now). I think any band that's artistically respected and popular will be considered overrated.

They're one of those bands where I kind of like a lot of what they do, but I wouldn't really listen to much these days. I loved OK Computer when it came out, less so The Bends, but it all seems a bit serious boys music sometimes, with never any real sense of playfulness.

y'know, I half expect they'll release/leak some printable artwork anyway 'cos they're just nice like that...

It may be the future and all that, but it’s a shame that musicians are having to give away the fruits of their labour, even if it is rotten.

Rotten?

I don't think Radiohead are having to give away their music, it's very much their choice, in much the same way Prince has been giving away or selling his music for next to nothing for years. They've no record company to please at the moment (they're unsigned out of choice at the moment, and one of the few bands on the planet who can basically pick and choose exactly who they want to record for and name their demands), and no real need for the money

Published by Robadob at 11:05pm on Mon 1st October 2007.

ok, so theres talk of a cd release next year. to be honest, the only people complaining are those who can invenvitably download it for free and stick it on a CD. ok, i love physical releases, i would buy the £10 CD if there was an option. I probably will go and fork out £40 as everything sounds better on vinyl.

i think its a bit silly theres no single/double CD option. But hey. Radiohead can afford to give their music away for whatever. If they need money, they could quite easily sell out a world wide arena tour if they needed to (they probably wouldnt do one though).

to be honest, its a really good step, this whole "lets put the album out in 10 days". Its been fucking ages since they put anything new out. This basicallly solves any issues of the album leaking and general download larks. Stars did the same thing with their new LP (except they were charging £8 or whatever for the download - so people just downloaded illegally for free). Good on them i say.

so your getting a new album for free if you want. Stop complaining.

ahh it wasnt ment to be a harsh message. I've constantly debated between giving our bands music away for free. It might pay off. But hassling people to buy £2 self-produced singles works better.

i think its quite noble for bigger bands to give their music away.

I don't want to print my own artwork, I want the lovely lovely real thing. I just don't like being held hostage to the tune of £40 for it...

I agree turkeyphant. I think it's really indulgent. Can you imagine the ructions if Girls Aloud did it? They'd have loads of parents complaining on the 10 o clock news!
