Even though I have contributed (if that's the word cos it went off on a tangent) to the other thread I do have to admit to owning a clubcard and like Jedimia am using the points as airmiles, I'm saving them for a trip to Canada - and yes I realise this is a tad hypocritical :)

Tesco provides a service.
If you don't wish partake of that service then don't.
Those who do wish patronise such places should be allowed to do so unimpeded and unmolested.
People choose to go to Tesco's. That's why it's so huge. To me, banging on about how it's all so wrong smacks a bit of 'people are too irresponsible to make the "right" selection of grocer and so should be denied the choice'. We're not a dictatorship! :-)

As much as it sticks in the craw of many, it's the massive buying power and brutal purchasing policies employed by economic behemoths such as Tesco that allow the price cutting and bargain offers that go a long way toward easing that 'relative poverty' that we've been hearing about in the press as of late.
It's an imperfect system I know, but I can't see where beating Tesco's with the shitty stick is going to make things any better.

And yes I do have both a Tesco and Sainsbury card.

I save my point's for days out at the Zoo. They're worth 4 times their face value that way.

Nearly everything I need seems to be on special offer today. Yay.

QUOTED FOR TRUTH! ;)

It's an immensely classist argument (as I think one or two people pointed out in the anti-Tesco thread) - to assume that everyone is able to be an ethical consumer and it's just their own laziness / ignorance / lack of morals holding them back. I've recently left a 43-hours-a-week minimum wage job; and while I'm lucky in having no dependants and relatively cheap rent, I still didn't have the time or money to buy groceries from these independent businesses smaller and supposedly SO much more ethical than Tesco/Sainsbury's.

Feel the alliteration of the Mill Road muesli mafia.

One point that was made when people were complaining when pizza hut opened was that the independent shops and takeaways aren't always particularly ethical. Independent doth not always mean ethical, something people seem to forget.

I remember one of the independent shops on Mill Road actually selling Sainsbury's milk at inflated prices, so not only were the farmers probably being shafted, the customer was also paying over the odds for cheap milk...

Never claimed it was mafia stylee, just that there was evidence that wiseman's weren't wonderful either :-) I think most major food companies are probably a bit mean...

Sheeeeetttttt...Well i suppose Italian Americans are always stereotyped in films as liking their food, so hey, why not live up to the cliché? *please note to the humour deficient, this isn't supposed to be a serious comment on italian americans*

Don't think there's an answer to that question. People who want Tesco have a lot to choose from. People who don't should campaign against it...

I like Tescos because it's the only place in town where you can get live mussels. And ever since a tesco Extra moved into the neighbourhood i actually can get hold of fresh fruit from around the corner. The shop before was appalling - nothing but junk and radioactive looking apples.
