More birthday present ideas needed

My eldest godson has had a really tough year - his Dad died a few months ago :-( He's a really cool kid and I love him to bits, and would like to get him something really special as it's his 18th birthday. I thought about getting him a nice MP3 player, but he's, inevitably, already got one. Any other suggestions? I'm prepared to spend up to around £100.

I don't know if it's the kind of thing you're thinking of but when my ex turned 21, I got him a really nice watch with an inscription on the back. That didn't cost more than £100 and it was something he was really pleased with. If you could source a nice vintage watch, that would be really nice.

When my oldest nephew turned 18 we just gave him money - he would have probably preferred a bong, but that would have probably been inappropriate.

Sorry - this post is not at all helpful. The watch idea seems good - or perhaps a ring (but NOT a sovereign!)

Yes, watch is always a good option for a special present, kind of the unisex equivalent of nice jewellery - good idea. Any others?

K - I was sort of thinking money, if all else failed, although it feels like a bit of an admission of defeat! Bong-wise - I'm sure he could just borrow his Mum's if necessary....

You could have a family whip round and get him a quality timepiece - or, if you go for the bong option, get him one of those really OTT ones with built in chiller and flashing lights - very bling!

What about some nice headphones

Hehe! And you could get it engraved for that personal touch.

Is he going off to university? Something practical to get him started living away from home might be nice. My brain's not working well enough today to think of a good example though. Duh.

Headphones never last, in my experience.

Buy him a ticket somewhere. Doing stuff > having stuff.

I was just Googling for experience days and WOW: http://www.daystoamaze.co.uk/pages/product890.tpl

Not much use in this case unless he's got a load of mates who are willing to spend £89, but still... WOW!

You could invest the money so he's got something put aside for when he needs it. That's a bit boring though I guess. The 18 year old in me recalls my parents persuading me to open a pension fund. I now appreciate that but at the time wanted driving lessons. Or a toshiba music centre!

Regardless, I think he's got a great godmother ;)

They give flying lessons at the local aerodrome & you can get a gift voucher. I got that to my ex a few years back and i think he really enjoyed the experience.
