The problem of over-compression and limiting to make everything as loud as possible is a very real one, but I'm not sure how much it has to do with MP3 or the iPod in particular. It's just a function of the way digital audio works, where the lowest possible peak-to-average ratio gives you the loudest sound at any given volume level.

There are lots of compromises involved in mastering and cutting vinyl records, too, such as 'diameter loss'.

Its also a issue with how music is being produced these days, rather than just how its being listened to.
