What I want is a film that either:
1) Is so good that it literally blows you away (for whatever reason) that when you're done you just sit and think "jesus, I will never see anything like that again in my lifetime"
or
2) Is so beautiful and/or moving that you feel like you could just burst with emotion.
Could be the same film... any genre...
I can't remember the last films I saw that instilled such feelings in me, which I think is sad.
i thank you.

That's a hard brief, and I don't think I've ever seen a film that blows me away. Trainspotting was brilliant but I think that and most other British films merely make me proud, not blow me away. I am far too cynical about Hollywood to even consider most popular films. I guess the last film that moved me was Ghosts which I think is on this evening, about migrant workers and focuses on the cockle pickers at Morecambe bay. I still love Michael Winterbottom's Jude for total, utter misery fest.
I am confined to bed rest until next week so will keep an eye on this post because I can guarantee that I'll bored as fuck by this evening and will need some good viewing material.

I can remember being totally blown away by Assault On Precinct 13 when I first saw it in the early '80s - it hasn't dated very well though.
Suspiria was pretty gobsmacking and still is.
For completely different reasons (obviously) I was also blown away when I saw Debby Does Dallas at around the same time!! First full on naughty I ever saw - should imagine that it has dated very badly.

Flandres by Bruno Dumont is a great movie.
Very harsh, but makes you think for a long time after it's finished.

Dancer in the Dark. The only film I have ever had an uncontrollable physical response to seeing.
