a hypothetical question for the hypothetical organisers of a hypothetical fanzine.

If a hypothetical person had a hypothetical brown envelope posted through their hypothetical door, and it contained a request to provide a photograph, but also the instruction that computers (hypothetical or otherwise) were not to be used, and the hypothetical person only owns a digital camera, and has had a rather good idea for a photo, would it be permissable for the hypothetical person to cheat and use her laptop? (Hypothetical cheating. Obviously.)

Thank you for your time.

It's not really cheating if they won't find out.

I thought of that, but I want to get into the spirit of the thing :)

Yeah... so make sure you don't post on any internet message boards about it.

Oops.

Do you know anyone with an old-fashioned camera you could borrow?

Hypothetically, I'd be confused.

It could mean that you can't use a computer to edit the photo after you've taken it, but that wouldn't prevent you from taking a photo and then using the computer to print it out.

Do they have a problem page?

I have an old non-digital camera you could borrow - it has a half-used film in it, so it'd be a good excuse for me to finish up the film and get it developed. Have no idea what pics are on it any more :$

Yeah, borrow a film-camera. I have one with some black and white film in it already I think. Or you could just buy a disposable camera. Computers are used in some way in the processing of most films anyway these days...

yes it is...

No.

I don't really understand the hypothetical, but I would not need to think for long before just using a digicam.

It's a project for a fanzine that was posted through my letterbox by a mystery person. I'm sure they're a WANer as the zine has been extensively discussed on here; but I don't know exactly who they are. The letter I got told me to pick a secret codename so I thought I'd be deliberately vague. (Cos I was bored.)

But (should probably have mentioned this before) my instructions also include that the picture has to fit in a box 5 and a half inches square. If I take a photo with a film camera, the smallest I can get it printed out at the film shop is 4" x 6". Which won't fit, obviously. Whereas, if I use a photo I already have on the digital camera, I can print it out in b&w and make it the right size.

I'm very happy to be involved with this project, but the organisers really haven't thought it through. If they really want to create a fanzine made entirely without modern technology, why ask for photographs? Why not contact people who can draw?
