[Event Chat] Micro Penis + The Vichy Government + The Jesus Christ Rhythm Method - 13/09/07

This is idle chat about the event...
Micro Penis + The Vichy Government + The Jesus Christ Rhythm Method
Thursday 13th Sep 2007 | Venue: The Portland Arms
Price: £4 | Time: 8pm | View event details

A week away and it's time for another event chat for Bigmals enjoyment.

If you are putting on a band with a slightly rude name, in future it will be better if they did not headline the gig. This means that it is exceptionally difficult to design a poster at work, and then when it is finished none of the usual cafes on Mill Road will let you stick up the aforementioned poster. See also Selfish Cunt, That Fucking Tank, Accidental Goat Sodamy and so on. It's a wonder they ever got anyone to see them at all.

Anyway Micropenis will be blowing everyone away with their debut headline show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN8aF0udsEA

The Vichy Government have just finished their third album and will be playing songs from it for your entertainment.

First on are the Jesus Christ Rhythm Method. I don't know what they sound like yet but I have been reliably informed that they are very psychedelic and groovy and have a stand up drummer.

There will also be sweets and films.

Missed the last one so will be at this.

I think the poster I had most trouble keeping up in Mill Road takeaways etc. was V/Vm, possibly due to it featuring the word 'offal'. (Either that or they were all scandalised that anyone could deface the image of Shakin' Stevens by colouring his eyes in completely black ...)

Published by bad-timing at 4:23pm on Thu 6th September 2007.

Mill road takeaways....offal

they were probably concerned their clientele would start thinking a little deeper about what they were doing!

Blame Mill Road takeaways I suppose. Everyone should go to Colchester if it happens again -- that seems to be pretty much the only place he plays in the UK these days. We saw him play as The Caretaker there last year, which was well worth it (although almost entirely unlike a lot of V/Vm obviously).

Published by bad-timing at 5:51pm on Thu 6th September 2007.

I randomly picked up a V/VM record in Notting Hill t'other week. Various corny lovesongs with all the melody varispeeded out of them. Nice.

I too have never seen them/it, but it was before my time...

Oh, people should come to this, too.

*Hyperbole*

This is tonight.
Micropenis are playing. They are superstars, except that not enough people have noticed yet.

The Vichy Government are also playing. They have just recorded their defining album. It is on par with other such great third albums as London Calling, The Queen Is Dead, Don't Stand Me Down, Third/Sister Lovers, and lots more I can't be bothered to list. They are always at their best live. I've seen them about 20 times and they've always been fantastic.

The Jesus Christ Rhythm Method aren't a usual band. They are from an alternative dimension where the 13th Floor Elevators had their own TV series instead of the Monkees. However due to the lack of the calming influence of the Monkees on three generations of children the world is now an altogether darker and disturbing place. Portable computers have not been invented and buskers around the world play stadium rock covers on amplified jugs instead of rickety acoustic guitars. It's a weird and frightening place to the unenlightened.

I've been informed that Beth Ditto mentioned this gig onstage at the Corn Exchange on Tuesday. Which is also cool.

Oh and I can't find Fruitella anywhere, but I've not given up yet.

Published by Silent Rob at 9:01am on Thu 13th September 2007.

I wish I could be there but alas, last night gig was so amazing I have to stay away from music for a few days as everything will be a disappointment after TELLISON. It's been a funny week, I have seen the best band so far this year and the worst so far this year... Tellison and Furious Sleep. Which is nice.

Eye infection, no money and need of relaxation = a night on the couch with good TV including catching up with Heroes at 11:20pm. I may even be wearing my jimjams from 7pm... yes, that chilled.

Aren't Fruitella just like a slightly posher Opal Fruits? Mind you, I think Opal Fruits have now changed their names, haven't they. What are they called now?

Published by Jude 1 (not active) at 9:53am on Thu 13th September 2007.

They are called Starburst now. I have not yet given up on Fruitella. I've got a few places left to try.

Published by Silent Rob at 9:55am on Thu 13th September 2007.

I saw some the other day - God, where was it? Maybe the Unwins off licence onn Chesterton Road, maybe the newsagents on Victoria Avenue. Apple Fruitellas were/are boss.

I've seen the multi packs in supermarkets too...

Published by Mattstep at 2:38pm on Thu 13th September 2007.

Don't be frightened Rob. This is all going to work out just fine — I can feel it.

Apart from the very real danger of it all ending with Micro Penis throwing chairs at one another during their set, obviously.

Music should start at nine, films start at 8:30. It'll be worth coming just for Micro Penis

Published by Kascha at 2:42pm on Thu 13th September 2007.

Micro Penis throwing chairs at one another during their set, obviously.
Sounds like a typical gig, or indeed night out, for them.

We are looking at film starting at: 8.30
JCRM (as all the cool people refer to them): 9pm
Vichy Government: 9.45
Micropenis: 10.30
Final drink: 11pm
Jazz / Queen Blag / Lady Portland throws us out: 12pm.

As usual times are subject to everything going smoothly, are subject to change, death, dismemberment, not responsible blah blah blah.

Published by Silent Rob at 2:50pm on Thu 13th September 2007.

Step - get there for JCRM. Yeah.

The idea of Jazz evicting us amuses me.

This just in: Micro Penis are speaking to one another and are expected to perform tonight. Alright!

Was pleased by the relative popularity of the music and the relative unpopularity of licorice allsorts (don't think I would have known these were there if not for WAN). High proportion of randomers in the bar/garden though.

Will there be another JCRM event at some point?

> High proportion of randomers in the bar/garden though.
By 'randomers ' do you mean 'dangerous' :)

Published by joosypigeon at 12:29pm on Fri 14th September 2007.

Potentially I suppose. More verbal randomness 'what's this night meant to be?' said in a slightly confrontational tone etc. etc. etc. which I haven't seen that much of in recent years at the Port.
Years ago we used to get paralytic old geezers losing their way back from the gents and stumbling in and out of the gig room semi obliviously.

You should have told them that it was a celebration of sexual diversity and gayness . . . and that he shouldnt be ashamed of his feeling and NEEDS anymore . . . and then said, 'you can come in for free . . . BIG BOY' :)

Did they shout?

Published by joosypigeon at 1:19pm on Fri 14th September 2007.

Apparently three people walked off in disgust as soon as the JCRM started the 'Jesus is Just Alright With Me' mantra, but I couldn't see. Annoyingly I missed some of tVG and most of mP due to a failure of multitasking, but they are heroes to a man/woman/drunk.

This evening proved the unimportance of rehearsals. It was ace. Thanks for coming down, if you did, because we don't ever want to...

Published by Matt Abysmal at 1:37pm on Fri 14th September 2007.

The JCRM formed on Sunday night and I enjoyed myself tremendously. I indeed spotted at least three people walk out during the Jesus mantra. Although the song "(Every day I praise god) Jeff Buckley is still dead" got a big cheer at the end. I also suspect this is the first time a band has covered a Faust song in the Portland.

The Vichys were ace as usual. Nice to hear the greatest hits.

Someone described Micropenis as sounding like Altered Images on crack, but still managed to singlehandly pack out the room. I am amazed. They clearly have star quality. Poor Andy injured his eye cleaning up the broken mirror, so caution is advised.

Today I have the worst hangover I have had for 8 years.

I'm confused. Who's in Jesus Christ Rhythm Method?

Published by Jude 1 (not active) at 5:49pm on Fri 14th September 2007.

The JCRM are group of people from the psychedelic FIFTH DIMENSION. Some people commented that they looked quite similar to various members of The Resistance playing different instruments with Holly on drums. But they are in fact alternate versions and they don't actually exist outside of fiction.

Published by Silent Rob at 6:13pm on Fri 14th September 2007.

Thank you. This explains things nicely.

Published by Jude 1 (not active) at 6:20pm on Fri 14th September 2007.

You're welcome. They may yet play this dimension again. I was told today that their version of Louie Louie was apparently the most shambolic performance ever played in public, so they have a lot to live up to next time.
