If I want to go to the Graduate...

Where do I park?

Being outside Cambridge and only really come in for shopping/gigs, I don't really know Chesterton Road! Is walking up from the Grafton the best plan?

Free parking all along Chesterton Road after 6PM, IIRC (from where Victoria Avenue meets Chesterton Road all the way down along behind Jesus Green, which has a swimming pool on you can see on the maplink below).

Actually a lot of the parking is free from 5, so it's even easier. There's parking directly outside the venue too if you're lucky. Which gig are you coming to foo?

Walking to the Graduate from the Grafton is OK. I don't walk across Midsummer Common/Victoria Avenue after 11pm unless I have no choice.

Plenty of free parking around Chesterton Road area after 6pm. I have always parked behind the Portland after 5pm and have never ever had any hassle at all. The only people who got arsey are the Furniture Store who started waving clamping signs around... they have just left the premises... so there is ample parking there.

As I said, you really don't want to be walking on your own after 11pm across Midsummer Common... it's not like it used to be years ago and I doubt you'd get any hassle... but it's just not worth the risk IMO.

"As I said, you really don't want to be walking on your own after 11pm across Midsummer Common"

This is just ridiculous! I've lived in Cambridge 12 years now, frequently wander across Midsummer Common (even when the fairs are on) late at night on my way back between the Portland and Mill Rd and have never seen the slightest whiff of trouble. I don't deny it sometimes happens, but to go out of your way to avoid something that statistically there's a tiny chance of happening? You'd never get out of bed in the morning!

Published by vegetableman at 9:50am on Thu 6th September 2007.

I agree with vegetableman completely. I've often walked round town at night by myself and never really experienced any major trouble. Cambridge is so safe!

Yeah, but i know people who get scared by kids hanging round by shops, so i'm always sceptical of people's perception of danger.

I got a 8-10 year old threaten to stab me in the face a few weeks back becuase i told them to pick up there litter.

so i can see why some people get scared.

It's a well known fact that these days fear of crime is way out of proportion to the reality of it.

True, but how many people do we know who have had one? I've just had a look at crime figures for Cambridge online and they've fallen every year

Did anybody see Cameron on TV this morning talking about the new Tory ideas to motivate 16 year olds?

Cameron makes me giggle. When he talks about a broken society i wonder where the seeds of this were sown...

I don't want to say to someone "Yeah, it's safe to walk across a dark open area" and then they do end up having hassle and say "HE told me to, he said it was safe".

And you may well get eggs thrown at you if you stay by the road!

Cambridge is relatively safe for sure, Chesterton Road is hardly Cold Harbour Lane...

If you have never encountered hassle then that's awesome, but some people have. I lived in London for 6 years and didn't get a single piece of aggro... my flatmate was mugged 3 times in two years... we went to the same places and everything... you never can tell.

I wouldn't encourage ANYONE to walk across a dark field at night... "Yeah, you'll be alright, nothing will happen to you". You do not know that.

So you are telling me that my advice to park near the venue is WRONG and that to tell someone to walk across a dark field after 11pm is RIGHT.

Published by ababoonsass at 10:23am on Thu 6th September 2007.

Georgie, when you've had something like that happen i can see how it makes you a bit more wary. My personal experience of crime is that i got mugged by Drummer Street about 10 years ago and i was a bit wary walking round by myself for a while, but in the end i basically thought that there was no way i was going to live my life in fear of it happening again (chances are pretty slim). I also narrowly escaped an unprovoked shoeing on the corner of Great Eastern Street and the Beaky a few years ago (i was fast enough to get into the passage by my house and lock the gate before they started taking boots at it).

No, but you were also advising against walking up Victoria Avenue right?

I think he just meant he didn't do it. He wasn't telling other people not to.

*but having a pre-teen threaten you with a face stabbing is fairly extreme - I hope you told him that you would impale him on a large metal spike if he tried it!*

after i got over the shock i explained to him he could try and that it would take several large power tools to remove his head from his own arse.

im expecting a attack by the parents anytime soon , in fact im well up for it , fed up with living in a shit town and haveing to put up with it.

bring it on.

no drink for me 2mw i think.

Published by General lee at 10:34am on Thu 6th September 2007.

Geographically, you have to walk along Victoria Avenue to get to the path that cuts across Midsummer common... it's just a part of the route. But I reiterate, I would never advise anyone to walk down there on their own. It's common sense after a certain time of night.

I'm not paranoid by any stretch, but the "Victim martyr" stance is bullshit. "I have the right to walk there any time I want without hassle". No you don't, not in the animal kingdom... in a Utopian society free of violence it works... down a dark street with random strangers you have no idea what can happen next. you want to test it, fine, I wish you a safe passage. But if you get mugged, have your cash stolen, your ipod and phone taken, if you get smacked about a bit... that is horrific. But don't let me say "I told you so", I just said "I would advise against walking across dark places at night on your own".

On this listings page it says Pub Goo is a Barfly event, thought this was greenmind?

Granted, it wasn't 'a kicking', but it was a good example of a completely unprovoked attack being carried out by someone with overwhelming confidence that they weren't going to get caught despite being on a street surrounded by witnesses and CCTV.
