Mightily so. There's room for an opening band if Econoline are game? That is unless you can wangle main support again?

Yeah, but for those who don't care it's about as interesting as conversations about bands are to people who don't care. To be honest there's place for both conversations on here, but why don't people just log off conversations they don't want to read? It's like Mal and his moaning. I wish there was a way of stopping someone reading your posts, kinda an inverse block.

Sorry I missed last night Simon - was up for going but really needed a night in to rest and recover from the weekend and illness - may be there Wednesday though.

It just funny that a venue I hated anw would not go to, is now a really cool place and I like it there. Just seems a better attitude from staff and in general. It may just be me.

Published by ababoonsass at 9:18am on Tue 18th September 2007.

That was fun. BRS were ace and it's good to see a gig where everyone was right at the front, listening intently and - ?!? dancing??? - rather that at the back, poncing miscellaneously....

Straw poll: is the low stage a problem?

I'd vote 'no', but I'm 6'4" and egocentric.

Published by Matt Abysmal at 9:36am on Tue 18th September 2007.

The low stage is a problem, but not sure what you can do about it.

Published by simon_b (not active) at 10:11am on Tue 18th September 2007.

Was the barrier up? Low stage and crowd barrier = lots people no see. Maybe a one or two rail pole-fence would be better... like scaffold pole sized tubes.

Published by ababoonsass at 10:12am on Tue 18th September 2007.

I indeed enjoyed myself. I do struggle a bit to see, but I slipped round tall people to a place I could see BRS.

Also, the decorating downstairs is looking promising. Fingers crossed the number of punters stays this good, it felt so cool.

Published by lozzy at 10:13am on Tue 18th September 2007.

Nope the barrier wasn't in. For the bigger shows the barrier is essential though. Scaffold tubes would bruise.

Published by simon_b (not active) at 10:14am on Tue 18th September 2007.

i think you should install a T-Barrier or D- Barrier like at all the big festivals simon :P

Published by MJAllstar at 10:17am on Tue 18th September 2007.

It's the same sort of barrier that they use as festivals, as it's basically a copy of a Mojo Barrier.

Published by MJAllstar at 10:21am on Tue 18th September 2007.

Either a higher stage, or an Alton-Towers style marker towards the front that says "you must be under this height to stand forward of this line!" would be good for shortarses like me :) Or failing that, shuffling forward and squeezing past the tall people is a good enough option.

It still amuses me that you managed to lose a Mojo Barrier at APU once, allowing you to truthfully say: "I've lost my Mojo!"

Hahaha we'll also start selling some lukewarm cans of carling for £3 and someone can set fire to the toilets at the end of the night. Ahhh how i don't miss Reading Festival.

Published by simon_b (not active) at 10:26am on Tue 18th September 2007.

I can't recall the name of the venue in West London that had the video footage showing in the main bar, but that was superb. You could see when the next band was due on stage and also playing bands could acquire a copy for themselves. Just two fixed cameras spanning the stage area. You could link the downstairs bar when open, so prior to the show and inbetween bands when people are chilling / escaping the gig room for a bit, they can see exactly when they need to get back via the screen.

I think there are some cool nights ahead with that downstairs bar... I may even try to sneak in a DJ DS set if allowed at some point!

Thanks for putting us on last night, Simon, we all enjoyed it despite all being a little under the weather, and I thought BRS' new stuff was the shit, good to see them getting better all the time! I hope the health warning thing wasn't a reference to my occasional showering of people with phlegm, I do apologise for that, and since I was dead ill at the weekend that could actually be accurate. For what it's worth, i think raising the stage could be a problem as Jane pointed out last night I could touch the ceiling easily and I'm only 5' 11" so raising it even like 6" would mean pretty poor clearance over the top, any greg norton style tuck jumps would result in serious injury. Maybe a raised about halfway back (a bit like the water rats?)... DS i think you're referring to the orange in west ken' I remember that had video, an old band i was in played there with ROCK BITCH, sadly pre their whole live sex show shtick .. i digress,. They have screens at the luminaire as well (or they did last time I was there) and that works quite well was good when I saw Jeff Lewis there and it was totally rammo. Also there they have a sort of lowered bit in the floor just in front of the stage which is quite nice, if it's a quiet band and a quiet night you can sort of sit on the step, and not get in people's way, and it makes feel more intimate, and it's quiet a good delineator for "the pit" I nearly fell into it when hey c' played there though as i was balancing like a twat right on the edge of the stage.

Published by ianscanlon at 10:39am on Tue 18th September 2007.

I don't like the wristbands to buy booze. I went to buy 2 pints and the barmaid insisted that she see my wristband and the one of my girlfriend who I was getting one for. I am clearly over 21 and haven't been ID'd for years, so my mixture of surprise and amusement seemed to convince her that my girlfriend didn't need to by hauled over. I was given the wristband without being aked for ID in the first place. Later I swelled up in the heat and had to rip the bloody thing off off to allow blood to reach my hand. All in all, annoying. If they do insist on this kind of thing maybe they should follow Colchester Arts Centre's example and have a boozing handstamp.

Published by carney at 10:43am on Tue 18th September 2007.

I did enjoy BRS and econoline, though, despite Piers econoline's hideous Star Trek guitar. That middle band were pretty dire though. Yawn.

Published by carney at 10:46am on Tue 18th September 2007.

To be fair, that's a licensing requirement so the kiddles can also attend. Seeing as I woke up with barfly stamp on my hand, arm and jaw I'm happy to stick with wristbands. Plus the venues been open about a week, give it time.

It was mighty warm though.

Published by lozzy at 10:49am on Tue 18th September 2007.

that guitar is the fucking future bro' he wanted a lake placid blue jag' but they cost more than italia joke ones.

Published by ianscanlon at 10:50am on Tue 18th September 2007.

I appreciate that it may well be for the licencing, but they didn't bother IDing in the first place. I just really hate those wristbands and try to avoid them where possible - they're always really uncomfortable and seem to rip a load of arm hair out too.

Published by carney at 10:53am on Tue 18th September 2007.

The Barfly clearly use the same handstamp ink as Damn You in Nottingham, cos my stamp ain't coming off for shit.

Published by ianscanlon at 10:55am on Tue 18th September 2007.

Carney - you get your pints a lot quicker with the wristband... It's either that or queue for ages while the barstaff ID people each time they buy a drink. And when the venue's packed out and there's a larger proportion of under 18s in the venue it'll make things a gazillion times more efficient.

Published by Matt Abysmal at 10:56am on Tue 18th September 2007.

scanlon and ollie looked so CUTE all matching!

Published by lozzy at 10:57am on Tue 18th September 2007.

Do you need both people to buy two drinks, or just both wristbands?

I can't recall the name of the venue in West London that had the video footage showing in the main bar
I seem to remember that the boat race had something similar so you could see the gig outside. I think at least one sold out gig had a crowd of people straining to see in the street outside.

Glad the new venue is working out anyway.

Only once did I have a problem going to a gig aged under 18. I went to see Prolapse in Reading when I was 16 and didn't get let in due to being to young. Traipsing my way back to the train station I found £20 on the floor, so it wasn't all bad. Everwhere else that I went I got into with no fuss, I just couldn't always get any booze.

The bands work, just don't put 'em on too tightly. I'm older than most people at gigs and I don't mind wearing them. The Barfly is perfect for minors to get into and not be a problem as it's upstairs and away from the main bar. The Portland used to have under 18's but when you got a bar full of kids running around and "adults" just wanting a sensible pint and chat... it didn't work oil and water style.

Do it Hollywood style... band plays two sets... one at 6pm for the minors with a closed bar and then a set at 10 for the elders.

Apparently after the Boat Race gig Prolapse went into town. They ended up scoring god knows what and demanded entry back into the venue at about 5am in a state that made George Best look sobar.

I missed the gig, but caught them on the same tour in Wolverhampton.

They did a headline UK tour in 1997 and late 1998, plus did a tour with Urusei Yatsura and Magoo in early 1998. So yes, nearly a decade.

For a band that sounds like a domesic argument set to music, drinking a lot onstage seems appropiate.
