That Liverpudlian band with the sax supporting Dogs Die In Hot Cars (I think) at APU

Oh this thread is self indulgent...

I saw:
Radiohead at the Junction (they were appalingly boring!)
Placebo at the Boat Race (twice)
Stereophonics at the Boat Race (I was waiting to see Ac Acoustics wondering what this dull drivel was)
Manics with Richey at the Corn Exchange
Green Day at the Junction
SFA at the boat race (blown off stage by Bis)
Also saw Idlewild support Midget in Birmingham for £2, although not in Cambridge.

Manic Street Preachers for £3 @ The Junction

I remember that. Got there to find it sold out, but the shivering tout in the car park sold us three tickets for a tenner. I guess he didn't make his fortune that night.

MSP were rubbish and got thoroughly upstaged by Nutmeg if I recall.

I was getting stoned upstairs while SFA played at the Boat Race, so missed their entire set...

If we're going to list shows i've done then:

Kasabian supporting Chikinki @ The Boat Race

Oasis @ The Boatrace. I still have my ticket stub too, if any fucking idiot out there wants to give me loads of money for it so they can pretend they were there instead : )

Si - I was at the first three gigs you mentioned above and had no idea who supported, memory wise! I do remember shifting shit loads of Radiohead's Pablo Honey cos they released it at mid-price so people took a punt on it. I hope whoever at the label had that idea is still getting paid handsomly by the band because I'm sure it made the difference.

Frank & Walters were fucking great, as were Elastica. Kingmaker though...

Aside from lots of punk band of course, the biggest not yet really famous band I saw at the Corn Exchange were the soon to be globe straddling Def Leppard (supported by Magnum). This was during my short and extremely ill advised dalliance with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal which also involved seeing Iron Maiden twice in Cambridge and having very long hair for 18 months!

I'm always a fan of the secret small shows. Andy Cairns at the Man on the Moon and Silver Sun at the Portland being the memorable ones.

I worked Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand and Secret Machines for Mr Baker but FF never really won me. There's a one band on the tip of my tongue that hasn't been mentioned yet but I can't bloody remember it, i'll repost later. Oh and I was there for RTC's first ever show as well. Lucky me.

Nutmeg were Tom Dalpra's band. No girls that I remember, but he did have very long hair. The first time I saw them, they actually broke the stage, which was quite impressive.

You have to remember that this was 1992 or something, and everyone else was playing the wussiest of indie rock.

I scored some gear for Green Day that night after they came and talked to me in the launderette on Cheery Hinton Road! I think it may have been more than a Henry too. But don't tell the fuzz : )

My best little gig thing was seeing Electrafiction @ The Boat Race - we sneaked upstairs after a great show and Bunnymen McCullock was every bit the gobby scous git we'd hoped he'd be. Top man.

Bellatrix! i'd forgotton about them (thank goodness), I saw them on their co-headline tour with Coldplay at the Duchess in Leeds. First time i saw Coldplay was supporting some crappy local band at Fibbers in York when they had only just been signed. Saw The Libertines at Fibbers too before Up The Bracket was out. Saw Elastica at Fibbers - though that was after they were famous really (remember their 'comeback'? No?). Futureheads at both Fibbers in York and the Cockpit in Leeds. Missed Captain-era Idlewild at Fibbers because of my sodding fresher's week in Bradford:-(

That will have been Greenbelt bigmal! I've been almost every year since 1997. Of the mainstream bands i've seen there the best were Asian Dub Foundation, The Polyphonic Spree, Duke Special and Billy Brag. Oh, and the Proclaimers a couple of years ago. Awesome! So the music's usually crap overall but there's a lot of interesting people (both Christian and non-Christian) saying interesting things. One of the highlights was Bill Drummond the last couple of years talking about whatever scheme he had going at the time. Sadly i missed U2 in 1977 due to being -3 years old.

I've only been in cambridge for 9 years, so not too many. I studied at university of warwick '90-'93 and saw quite a lot of bands at the SU who went on to great things, in particular I remember Blur, Radiohead and The Cranberries.

1991-09-28 dinosaur jr played manchester academy... but my friend and I didn't care a jot about them. We bought tickets to see the support band (I kid you not)... some kids who had about 1 ep to their name... the Boo Radleys. Happy days.

1992-04-10 pj harvey @ burnley mechanics. days after I first heard her on john peel.

may 1991, spiritualized @ coventry tic toc. can't remember if this was before or after their 1st ep.

1994-10-17 Ash opening for Elastica @ manchester MUSU (now = MA2). They (ash) had one ep out, which to this day remains their one and only good song.

2000-04-05 sigur ros opening for godspeed you black emperor! @ manchester planet k.

2001-10-30 gemma hayes opening for sparklehorse @ leicester.

But... I realise this is a cambridge thread... so...

2003-09-28 Stephen Fretwell opening for Elbow @ the junction. Stephen subsequently was due to come back to cambridge november 2004, the was the day (or the day after) the portland closed. As far as I could tell I was the only person to turn up. I still have my ticket :) Simon, you owe me a fretwell gig :)

That's the one Steve W! I've re-told that story many times since then. I seem to remember them announcing that it was their 100th gig - amazing that they were still so crap. Can you remember who was supporting? Was it A Flock of Seagulls?

The Editors. Another band I was in the building for (this time the Portland) but didn't actually see.

I looked in the Portland that night, saw how rammed it was, and though fuck that and went elsewhere. Glad too - miserable crap : )

It was my birthday that night. I did make an effort to see the band but I couldn't even get into the lobby where the door was.

My best birthday gig was my 21st - Voice of the Beehive at the Junction in 1991! Superb night out. I think...

I saw Kenickie in Coventry on my 19th Birthday. That was a good one.
I am fairly sure that the VOTB gig was Chris Sharkey's first ever gig. I'll need to check.

Steve?
He used to wear a red mask and mosh furiously at the front of the stage when they played. He wasn't in the band. One Way Down borrowed Hoffmans monkey for a few gigs. I'm sure I didn't imagine the whole thing.

Autechre are bigger (and certainly more expensive) than to play somewhere like the Boat Race now.
At one of the few decent gigs that happened in Edinburgh when I lived there, Autechre played supported by a small unknown local band called Boards of Canada (I was stuck on a Virgin train somewhere in the Lake District during BoC's set though so I can't count that even as a non-Cambridge one).

That's why I was wondering whether to mention things like AC, but they are a long way beyond the toilet circuit now (someone else's definition for this thread).

Fair point. I think the use of the word famous should have been changed for big. Famous equals everyone knowing who a band is, whereas if you're big, you're not necessarily famous. Does that make sense???

Ah, the glory days before the multiple label signings and the clothing sponserships. How they've let the power get to them now. Walking around in their free clothes like they didn't pay for them :)

Sailors Arms by DAAS

I met her at the 'Sailor Arms' - a bar down by the docks.
Full of prostitutes and deviants and fellows wearing frocks.
Went there to drown my sorrow, my misery and pain.
With fourteen multicoloured pills and a pint of heavy ale.

I saw this girl across the way, who was smiling through the wine.
So I begged her come on over, come on over, spend some time.
And I spilled my life before her and she seemed to understand.
Although she was a girl we were talking man to man (man to man).

For love is where you find it wherever that may be.
For me it was in the Sailors Arms at twenty-five past three.
There's something strange about her I can't put my finger on.
But I wanna tell the world that she's the one (she's the one).
I wanna tell the world that she's the one.

She strolled up to the toilets - she strolled into the Gents.
I asked her why she did it, why she'd gone to pay the rent.
We arm-wrestled and I lost, she beat me with a spike,
Told me seedy jokes that were quite unlady-like (lady-like).
It was four in the morning and through the smoky haze,
I could've been mistaken but she needed to shave (to shave).

For love is where you find it wherever that may be.
For me it was in the Sailors Arms with a better man than me.
Her husky voice seduced me my heart was in a mess.
I sat upon her knee as something twitched beneath her dress,
There's something more than knees beneath her dress.

You've got nice eyes says I (Oh Sir, I am surprised!)
What large hands I said (All the better to touch you with)
God, you arms look strong (A woman's work is never done)
Your legs are quite hirsute (Aren't you the saucy one!)

I was feeling less than stable when she said her name was Ken (Ken!)
Well if I had suspicions Lord I should've had 'em then (then!).
She cried as she told me how she was so confused.
One more visit to the doctor she'd have nothing left to lose (Toulouse-Lautrec).

I ran my fingers through her wig, she lightly stroked my hair.
She said she was a man, (Whoa whoa! She said she was a man? A man called Ken - Bull-twang!)
Lots of men are called Ken (So what did you say Paul?).
I told her I don't care (He doesn't care).

For love is where you find it wherever that may be.
For me it was in a hopper bin with my trousers 'round my knees.
There's something strange about her I just put my finger on.
And I want to tell the world that she's the one (he's the one).
I want to tell the world that it's the one.
