The C word seems to be used far too much as well on this board and, yes, I also find that offensive as well along with other degenerate phrases to the female body. I personally hate the use of swearing in general - my boss used the F word in pretty much every sentence and I find myself accepting that which annoys me like mad. It points to a lack of imagination and basic education - there are so many other words and descriptions that you can use instead.

I also hate posts in text speak as well but thankfully hardly anyone appears have sunk that low on WAN.

I don't know. Swearing every other word makes you sound an idiot, but it's useful to have some strong words available for effect when needed.

What I object to more is the fact that it is seen as a worse (read: much more disgusting) word than, for example, calling someone a cock or a dick. Why? This, to me, seems to be the mysogenistic thing - the implicit assumption that a woman's bits are more disgusting, shameful etc (and therefore it is more of an insult to be likened to them) than a man's.

What we need is a really offensive unisex genital synonym, then.

I think the meaning's been totally detatched from anything to do with genitals, though, and the reason it's considered more offensive than any other swearword is probably due to it historically being so rather than any kind of suggestion that women's bits are more disgusting than men's bits.

I guess so, Mr S never swears but when he does use the F word then you know he's more than a bit mad. That, I think, is acceptable but not as an every day word in a sentence thing or posted at random on WAN.

I hate the C word because I hate the way it sounds. That's the only reason, I think. I think it is just such a nasty word and it makes me feel all yucky inside when I hear it. There are quite a few words I don't like. The words 'smell' and 'Smee' look vile to me, and I never say them. Even typing them and looking at them makes me feel yucky. How strange. Must post to keep from deleting them.

I think that's a lot of the appeal of using it, though, it sounds so aggressive and curt and nasty, and so likely to be used in a situation where you want to get that across.

Maybe it is. Good point and not one I've encountered before. I'd think I'd find it difficult but then that's more do to with how we were brought up as children - to treat my brother as an equal than as a problem. I need to have think about that as my first reaction would be like yours Chocoholic, jaw drop moment! Maybe that's why Brenda posted the comments in the first place? Brenda?

I read (maybe on WAN?) about Gordon Thoday's (remember them) who had a black lady who came in asking for 'nigger brown' fabric - she thought it was hilarious. As Jude says, reclaming the word I guess. But at least she could, with humour and it was her choice. For me to be comfortable with saying 'retard', I'd feel I was accepting on my brother's behalf rather than allowing him to make that choice himself.

I've never come accross this attitude either, my eldest brother has cerebral palsy and words like spastic or retard (especially used as an insult) i find really annoying though i usually forgive the ignorance of whoever does it. I think most people don't associate it properly with its actual meaning. I remember when i used the word spastic as a kid once and got a stern talking-to from my parents. I didn't have a clue what it meant before that and since then i would never use it as an insult. My brother is incalculably ace so to use a word that describes a condition he has for someone you hate is completely counter-intuitive for me.
