THE LAVENDER BARN WIND QUINTET

In a glorious concert to support Histon Baptist Church, The Music at First Touring Choir is joined by the Lavender Barn Wind Quintet to perform Musical Moments, a cornucopia of pieces by British and American composers.

The choir’s entertaining and lively programme features a wide range of British and US choral classics, hymns, sacred works, organ pieces and spirituals, some with organ or piano accompaniment, and some sung unaccompanied. They include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Let all the World in Every Corner Sing, Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem, and a range of traditional, spiritual and more modern songs from across the Atlantic.

Complementing this, the quintet will be playing Mozart’s Divertimento in F major, K213, and a selection of popular classics from composers such as MacDowell, Beethoven and Gilbert and Sullivan.

The choir, which heralds from The First Presbyterian Church of Grand Junction, Colorado (USA), kicked off in 2017 with a tour to Germany for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. This was so successful that in 2019 they are visiting Scotland, England and Ireland.

Director and conductor John Howard is a musician and academic with considerable experience as an organist, conductor and teacher. Before his current appointment as Director of Music and Worship Arts at The First Presbyterian Church of Grand Junction, Colorado, he served in similar positions at a number of other churches in California and Mississippi. Academic appointments have included teaching and conducting at high school, collegiate and university levels. He is a freelance accompanist in the music department at Colorado Mesa University and most recently has accepted a position as music teacher at Intermountain Adventist Academy.

The Lavender Barn Wind Quintet is based locally, with players from Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. It plays across the whole spectrum of music for wind group, the only condition being that it must be enjoyable!

This free concert should be great fun – a lovely way to spend a summer’s evening.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of Histon Baptist Church.
