Art Jamaica

In October this year, we will be hosting an exhibition entitled, Art Jamaica, an exciting and unique look at Jamaica's modern and contemporary art scene through the work of her women artists.

The inspiration behind this has come from a private collection owned by Theresa Roberts, who was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica and lived there for the first 8 years of her life before following the rest of her family to live in London. Theresa is tremendously proud of her cultural heritage and is a keen advocate of Jamaican art. She has been collecting since the late 1990s and now has a substantial collection of incredibly diverse works. Through her connections, we have secured works by young up and coming artists to represent the current art being created in Jamaica.

Artists will include: Edna Manley, Laura Hamilton, Monique Lofters, Khepera, Ebony G Patterson, Helen Elliott, Anna Henriques, Keisha Castello, Margaret Chen, Laura Facey-Cooper, Judy Ann McMillan, Kristina M Rowe, and Trudy Ann Barrett.

The artists in this exhibition all speak of what it is to be Jamaican; all provide a sense of their cultural surroundings.

Here at the New Hall Art Collection, we are committed to the promotion of women’s art from around the world; exhibiting art from different cultures in an effort to recognise similarities and marvel at the distinctions. Art Jamaica will promote the uniquely vibrant and culturally rich artwork of Jamaica to new audiences, raising the profile of these artists in the international art world.

The exhibition will run alongside the Cambridge Festival of Ideas, a Cambridge-wide festival open to, and aimed at, the general public to share in the opportunities available at the University of Cambridge. Talks, events and exhibitions are mounted each year to celebrate the arts, humanities and social sciences.
